Coach John Gartiser has assembled a team of predominantly Section 9 wrestlers for this Sunday’s Journeymen Freestyle Duals being held at Union College.  Each team will wrestle pool matches and then will have one crossover match for placement.  Below is Gartiser’s roster….Good luck boys!!!

Weekend Odds and Ends

US Open Men’s Freestyle
Army assistant coaches Enock Francois and Brad Pataky made the trip to Las Vegas to compete in the US Open.  Pataky, competing at 57KG went 2-2 with both of his victories coming via tech fall.  Francois went 3-2 at 86KG and notched 3 tech falls along the way.

FILA Jr. Freestyle
Army wrestler Brian Harvey made it to the finals at 79KG where he dropped a 13-2 TF decision to PA native and current NC State wrestler Peter Renda.  Army wrestlers Logan Everett (1-2 @ 63KG) and Mark Marchetti (0-2 @ 66KG) also competed in the event.  In a very anticipated match at 66KG, high school phenom Aaron Pico defeated Penn State All-American freshman Zain Retherford by a score of 7-0.

War at the Shore
Minisink Valley wrestlers Gerard Daly and Michael Raccioppi along with Saugerties 220 pounder Rob Cuomo competed folkstyle this weekend at the War at the Shore in Wildwood, NJ.  Raccioppi, competing at 142.5 pounds, finished 3rd with his only loss coming to Michael Labriola who finished 7th in PA AA division.  Daly, who competed at 113 during the HS season, wrestled at 132.5 pounds and went 3-2.  Cuomo went 3-2 with both of his losses coming by a single point to the wrestlers who placed 3rd and 6th in the weight.  Great job all three guys! 

Cornwall’s Don Blaine To Be Inducted Into National Wrestling Hall of Fame

BlaineGood things happen to good people!  It has come to my attention that Cornwall head wrestling coach Don Blaine has been selected as a 2014 inductee to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.  Coach Blaine will receive a Lifetime Service Award from the New York Chapter of the Hall of Fame.  The induction ceremony will take place later in the year and details will be posted when they are finalized.  Below is a list of some of the many accomplishments in Coach Blaine’s storied career.  On behalf of the entire Section 9 wrestling community – Congratulations Coach Blaine!!!

2014 Las Vegas

2014VegasThe Las Vegas Convention Center will be the site of some of the most exciting wrestling of the year when it serves as host to this weekend’s Las Vegas/ASICS Senior Open and Junior wrestling tournaments. 

Of local interest, two of Army wrestling coaches are entered in the Senior Open’s freestyle tournament and have received seeds.  Brad Pataky, a Penn State graduate who serves as an Army Wrestling assistant coach, is the #8 seed at 57 kilograms (125.5 pounds).  The 8th seed at 86 kilograms (189 pounds) is West Point’s volunteer assistant Enock Francios.  Francois also serves as club coach for the West Point Wrestling Club.  Army will also have 4 competitors participating in the Junior freestyle division as Logan Everett (137.5), Mark Marchetti (145.5), Brian Harvey (174), and Austin Wilding will all take to the mat!

Section 9 Mourns Loss of Goshen Senior Lance Golubinski

Lance GolubinskiOn behalf of the entire Section 9 wrestling community, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family of Lance Golubinski.  Lance, a senior at Goshen High School, passed away Wednesday night from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. 

Services are on Sunday from 2-7 at Donovan’s Funeral Home in Goshen. Funeral services are Monday at 11:00 am at St. James Church.

Rest in peace Lance.

It’s Time For Freestyle and Greco!!!

                                    Crusader Training Center

Come train freestyle and Greco Roman in preparation for freestyle and Greco Roman States as well as the Asics/Vaughn freestyle and Greco Roman Nationals in Fargo!  This training opportunity is open to all Section 9 and Section 1 wrestlers who would like to train together for states and/or Fargo!  It is also a great opportunity to improve upon many skills that will make you a better HS wrestler.  Freestyle and GR wrestling will drastically improve your positioning and footwork which will lead to more successful shots and better takedown defense.
