Section 9 Individual Rankings – December 31, 2023

What better way to close out 2023 than with a fresh set of rankings! Wrestlers are ranked at the lowest weight class in which they have competed. As always, respectful feedback is welcomed at sectionixwrestling@gmail.com. Happy New Year and let’s make 2024 the best year ever – on and off the mat!

101 Pounds – Division 1
1. William Soto (NFA, 9)
2. EJ Vass (Valley Central, 8)
3. Kelly Sullivan (Monroe Woodbury, 8)
4. Garrett Judd (Warwick, 9)
5. Gigi Sullivan (Monroe Woodbury, 7)

101 Pounds – Division 2
1. Matteo Walsh (Rondout Valley, 7)
2. Justin Jones (Port Jervis, 7)

Valley Central’s Vass is now down at 101 and takes over the #2 spot. He and NFA’s Soto met in the Mid-Hudson finals with Soto winning by a 12-4 major. Kelly Sullivan and Garrett Judd slide down to #3 and #4 respectively while we have a new #5 in Gigi Sullivan who notched a win over previously ranked Anthony Noboa from Middletown. We also need to watch out for Griffynn Alfalla from Pine Bush who is having a very solid season! No changes in 101 D2 with Rondout Valley’s Matteo Walsh at #1 and Port Jervis’ Justin Jones at #2.

108 Pounds – Division 1
1. Cooper Merli (NFA, 10)
2. Marco Futia (Wallkill, 10)
3. Gabe Simpson (Minisink Valley, 10)
4. Jared Lupian-Reyes (Middletown, 11)
5. Logan Shultis (Kingston, 11)

108 Pounds – Division 2
1. Charlie Wylie (Port Jervis, 10)
2. Carmello Massey (Red Hook, 9)

Merli and Futia were both at the Mid-Hudson but did not meet head-to-head. Both wrestlers lost to LaGala-Ryan from Longwood. Merli dropped a 9-7 decision in the semis and Futia was majored 20-9 in the finals so there is no change here in our top two. Vass is now down at 101 so MV’s Simpson, who had a strong 3rd place showing at the Linn Crawn in Kittatinny, NJ, moves up to #3. Middletown’s Lupian-Reyes is now #4 and we have a new #5 in Logan Shultis from Kingston. A few others to keep our eyes on here are Owen Milmore from Washingtonville and Juan Landa Cruz from Saugerties who are off to great starts to the 2023-2024 season. In Division 2 Port Jervis hammer Charlie Wylie continues to dominate the competition and remains our #1 followed by Massey from Red Hook who notched a few nice wins at the Mid-Hudson.

116 Pounds – Division 1
1. Gianni Gennaro (Washingtonville, 9)
2. Santiago Chrisjohn (Saugerties, 9)
3. Jordan Busby (NFA, 11)
4. Greg Schaefer (Goshen, 10)
5. Gabriel McNally (Pine Bush, 11)

116 Pounds – Division 2
1. Lorenzo Caserto (Marlboro, 9)
2. Andrew Roberts (Port Jervis, 8)

Gennaro from Washingtonville and Chrisjohn from Saugerties remain top-2 in our D1 ranking but we have a new #3 in Jordan Busby from NFA has come down from 124 and takes over the spot. Schaefer from Goshen and McNalley from Pine bush are now at #4 and #5 but we need to keep pay attention to Colin Matone from Minisink Valley and Liam McCarthy from Wallkill who are definitely going to be in the mix here. No need to make any changes in D2 with Caserto from Marlboro remaining #1 followed by Roberts from Port Jervis.

124 Pounds – Division 1
1. Brady Judd (Warwick, 11)
2. Myles Amell (Saugerties, 10)
3. Elijah Brown (Monroe Woodbury, 8)
4. Devin Strother (Wallkill, 11)
5. Luke Dakin (FDR-Hyde Park, 10)

124 Pounds – Division 2
1. Ewen Celestine (Red Hook, 11)
2. Bradley Gatto (Highland, 11)

Brady Judd from Warwick stays at #1 followed by Myles Amell from Saugerties at #2. These two met earlier this year and Judd won by a score of 6-5. This weight class has a new #3 in Elijah Brown from Monroe Woodbury. After struggling a little during the first few weeks, Brown has made his way down to 124 and judging by his 2nd place finish at the Massapequa Tournament, he seems to be finding his stride. We also have a new #4 here in Devin Strother from Wallkill. Strother had a strong 4th place showing at the Mid-Hudson including a win by fall over our #5 here, Luke Dakin from FDR-Hyde Park. Coppola from Minisink Valley keeps getting better and we need to keep an eye on him here. He made it all the way to the finals at the Linn Crawn Tournament in NJ and will definitely stay in the mix. In Division 2, Ewen Celestine from Red Hook is now down at 124 and he takes over the #1 spot here followed by Bardley Gatto from Highland. Celestine came within a sudden victory loss of advancing to day 2 at the Mid-Hudson. We should also keep an eye on Cole Corcoran from Port Jervis at this weight class.

131 Pounds – Division 1
1. Luke Satriano (Valley Central, 11)
2. Matthew Mercado (NFA, 11)
3. Viktor Banda (Wallkill, 12)
4. Nate Racz (Minisink Valley, 10)
5. Jacob Perales (Goshen, 12)

131 Pounds – Division 2
1. Justin Harrison (Port Jervis, 11)
2. Reece Greathouse (Marlboro, 12)

If you combine both D1 and D2, 131 pounds may be the deepest weight class in Section 9 right now. Defending state champion Satriano from Valley Central is the clear #1 here. Mercado from NFA looked awesome in his run to the Mid-Hudson title where he defeated Wallkill’s Banda by injury time in the finals. Banda is tough and dangerous and has a win over our #4 here, Racz from Minisink Valley who was a finalist in Kittatinny. Our new #5 here is Jacob Perales from Goshen who placed 4th at the Ken Haines and is putting together a very nice season so far! In Division 2 we could be looking at a great showdown at 131 in February. We’ll keep Harrison at #1 for now and our new #2 is Reece Greathouse from Marlboro who had a nice showing at the Mid-Hudson where he placed 5th in a very tough weight!

138 Pounds – Division 1
1. Griffin Petzold (Warwick, 11)
2. Wyatt Boice (Minisink Valley, 9)
3. Jacob Roger (Middletown, 12)
4. Joseph Uhrig (Minisink Valley, 9)
5. Maximus Smith (Valley Central, 9)

138 Pounds – Division 2
1. Thomas Shields (Onteora, 12)
2. Markus Ferrara (Port Jervis, 9)

Previous #1 and 2023 state qualifier Richie Degon has suffered an injury and is out so our new #1 at 138 is Warwick’s Griffin Petzold. Petzold is currently undefeated with bonus points in every match! Minisink Valley freshman Wyatt Boice moves up to #2 followed by Middletown’s Jacob Roger at #3. Boice’s MV teammate Joseph Uhrig sits at #4 and we have a new #5 in VC freshman Maximus Smith who has dropped down to 138 from 145. There are several others in the hunt here including Rhett Alvarado from Monroe Woodbury, Richard Urena from Pine Bush, Michael Lombardi from Goshen, and John Naparano from Wallkill. With Reece Greathouse moving to 131, Thomas Shields from Onteora is our new #1 at 138 in D2. Port Jervis freshman Markus Ferrara is having a very solid year and is our new #2 at 138 this week!

145 Pounds – Division 1
1. Anthony Tresch (Minisink Valley, 11)
2. Daniel Aviles (Middletown, 10)
3. Liam Hayes (Monroe Woodbury, 10)
4. Evan Weeden (Goshen, 10)
5. Michael Cantania (Valley Central, 10)

145 Pounds – Division 2
1. Justin Coiteux (New Paltz, 12)
2. Anthony Theodore (Port Jervis, 11)

Minisink Valley’s Anthony Tresch won the Linn Crawn in Kittatinny, NJ and he remains our #1 at 145 D1. Aviles from Middletown looks great at stays at #2 followed by our new #3, Liam Hayes from Monroe Woodbury. Hayes is already battled tested this season and he placed 2nd at the Massapequa Holiday Tournament. Evan Weeden from Goshen, who placed 8th at the Ken Haines, is our #4 wrestler here and Michael Cantania from Valley Central rounds out our top-5. We also need to keep an eye on Monroe Woodbury’s Brandon Carcaterra who placed 4th at Massapequa. On the D2 side, Justin Coiteux from New Paltz drops down from 152 and he’s our new #1 at 145. Theodore from Port Jervis slides into the #2 spot and we still need to keep an eye on Luke Potter from Eldred.

152 Pounds – Division 1
1. Luke Greiner (Minisink Valley, 12)
2. Mason Ketcham (Washingtonville, 11)
3. Logan Pennell (Pine Bush, 11)
4. Anastasios Tzezailidis (Warwick, 10)
5. Jack Bucci (Saugerties, 12)

152 Pounds – Division 2
1. Quinian Jones (Highland, 11)
2. Patrick Nolan (Ellenville, 10)

No changes in the top-5 at 152 D1. Greiner ran through the competition in NJ at the Linn Crawn and Ketcham looked very tough enroute to his title at the Mid-Hudson Tournament. Pennell, Tzezailidis, and Bucci remain at #3, #4, and #5 and all three are having great seasons. With his 4th place finish at Massapequa, Monroe Woodbury’s Isaiah is right on the cusp of cracking the rankings and a few others to watch at this weight are Jude Betancourt from Beacon and Mario Lam from Goshen. With Coiteux going down to 145, Highland junior Quinian Jones becomes our new #1 at 152 D2. Ellenville’s Patrick Nolan only has three matches but he’s undefeated thus far and we will keep him as our #2 here!

160 Pounds – Division 1
1. PJ Duke (Minisink Valley, 11)
2. Dan Weeden (Goshen, 12)
3. Matteo Morell (NFA, 10)
4. Isaiah Hockx (Saugerties, 12)
5. Liam Dakin (FDR-Hyde Park, 10)

160 Pounds – Division 2
1. Ryan Ross (Port Jervis, 12)
2. Michael Franco (Chester, 12)

The 160-pound weight class in D1 and D2 have no changes this week. With his dominating, title-winning performance at the Linn Crawn Tournament in NJ, Minisink Valley junior PJ Duke continues to show why he is considered one of the top pound-for-pound wrestlers in the nation. Weeden placed 5th at the Ken Haines and holds on to the #2 spot and Morell from NFA placed at the Mid-Hudson and keeps the #3 ranking here. Hockx from Saugerties and Dakin from FDR-Hyde Park stay at #4 and #5 respectively. Port Jervis senior Ryan Ross looks very tough this year and he is our #1 in D2 and Chester’s Michael Franco holds the #2 position at 160 D2.

170 Pounds – Division 1
1. Quinten Morgan (Minisink Valley, 12)
2. Anthony Annacone (Wallkill, 12)
3. Musa Aljamal (Washingtonville, 12)
4. Jonathan Subocz (Monroe Woodbury, 12)
5. Ethan Conrow (Pine Bush, 12)

170 Pounds – Division 2
1. Frankie Shaw (Burke, 12)
2. Elvin Momanyi (Chester, 10)

Minisink’s Quinten Morgan made it to the finals of the Linn Crawn and remains #1 followed by Annacone from Wallkill who placed 3rd at the Mid-Hudson. A very solid case could be made for several wrestlers taking the next few spots but for this week we will go with Aljamal from Washingtonville at #3, Subocz from Monroe Woodbury, who placed at Massapequa, at #4, and Conrow from Pine Bush at #5. Conrow has a recent win over Bilyou from FDR-Hyde Park who took 4th at the Mid-Hudson and should not be overlooked here. Avery Davis from Beacon advanced to day 2 at the Mid-Hudson and is also one to watch at 170 D1. No changes on the D2 side of 170 with Frankie Shaw holding down the top spot followed by Chester sophomore Elvin Momanyi.

190 Pounds – Division 1
1. Zachary Filip (Minisink Valley, 10)
2. Johnny Accardo (Warwick, 12)
3. Chris Herriman (FDR-Hyde Park, 12)
4. William Coughlin (NFA, 10)
5. Ryan Calfe (Valley Central, 12)

190 Pounds – Division 2
1. Ivan Figueroa (Port Jervis, 12)
2. Maddox McCormick (Port Jervis, 11)

Zachary Filip from Minisink Valley pinned his way through the Linn Crawn in NJ and is our top ranked wrestler at this weight. Johnny Accardo from Warwick is still undefeated and holds down the #2 spot here. Similar to 170 D1, the next few spots here at 190 D1 are pretty tough to rank. For this week we’ll put Chris Herriman at #3. Herriman had a great Mid-Hudson placing 3rd including a win over Ryan Calfe from Valley Central who placed 6th at the Mid-Hudson and is honorable mention here. Our #4 this week is NFA sophomore Coughlin who made it to day 2 at the Mid-Hudson and has a recent win over Luis Rodas-Paz from Monroe Woodbury who is Honorable Mention here. Rodas-Paz placed 5th at Massapequa. Our #5 wrestler this week at 190 D1 is Kyle Kubik who is having a very solid season including a win a few weeks ago over Calfe from VC. No change at 190 D2 with two hammers from Port Jervis, Ivan Figueroa and Maddox McCormick, holding down the top two spots respectively.

215 Pounds – Division 1
1. Bryson Tibbs (Middletown, 12)
2. Christopher Leggett (NFA, 11)
3. Ashton Capen (Monroe Woodbury, 10)
4. Christian Lemus (Wallkill, 12)
5. Timmy Duke (Minisink Valley, 10)

215 Pounds – Division 2
1. Matt Oosterom (Port Jervis, 12)
2. Kwadwo Osei-Kwanin (Chester, 11)

No changes this week at 215 D1 and the results have actually made the rankings pretty straightforward. Bryson Tibbs from Middletown is a returning state place winner and has a win over NFA’s Christopher Leggett. Leggett, who made it to the finals of the Mid-Hudson, has a win over Capen, who placed 3rd at the Massapequa Holiday Tournament. Capen has defeated Lemus from Wallkill and Lemus has a win over Timmy Duke from Minisink Valley who is getting better every week and was a Linn Crawn finalist. PJ’s Oosterom is the clear #1 at 215 D2 and has his sights et on a state title while our #2 here is Chester junior Kwadwo Osei-Kwanin.

285 Pounds – Division 1
1. Stephan Monchery (Middletown, 12)
2. Rahmiere Bradley (Middletown, 12)
3. Kevin Crowe-Bailey (Minisink Valley, 11)
4. Julian Aviles (Wallkill, 10)
5. Noah Ricci (Kingston, 11)

285 Pounds – Division 2
1. Mark Paschal (Red Hook, 12)
2. Nick Oosterom (Port Jervis, 9)

Middletown’s Stephan Monchery, who recently committed to wrestle at the University of Buffalo, has his sights set on a state title this season and is the clear #1 here. His teammate, Rahmiere Bradley, is our #2 at 285 D1 and he also has the potential to place very high in Albany this year. Our #3 this week is Kevin Crowe-Bailey from Minisink Valley. Crowe-Bailey placed 3rd at Kittatinny and has a win over our #4 here, Julian Aviles from Wallkill. Aviles was the 285-pound champion at the Mid-Hudson Tournament! Our new #5 this week at 285 D1 is Noah Ricci who has seen limited action but is undefeated and has a win over honorable mention Jaheel Wilson from NFA. Pine Bush has a few heavyweights to keep an eye on – both Patrick Curren and Greg Florin are having very solid seasons! Red Hook’s Mark Paschal placed 5th at the Mid-Hudson and remains our #1 at 285 D2 followed by Port Jervis freshman Nick Oosterom.

Section 9 Individual Rankings – December 17, 2023

Better late than never! Let’s take a look at the first edition of the Section 9 Rankings.

Annual Disclaimer….
These rankings are for fun. In the grand scheme of things, rankings mean absolutely nothing! They DO NOT factor into how a tournament is seeded. Rankings are posted to create a “buzz” and discussion about the sport that we love – nothing more, nothing less. I can almost guarantee that I have made a few glaring mistakes and/or omissions. I can assure you that it was nothing personal. Respectful comments and questions are always welcome at sectionixwrestling@gmail.com.

Enjoy!
