With one weekend of wrestling in the books, it’s time to udate the 2011-2012 Section 9 Wrestling rankings. We are still doing a combined D1 and D2 rankings for the next few weeks. We will also begin to post team rankings within the next few days. Here they are!

Behind the strength of two Section 9 grads, SUNY Oneonta finished 5th in the overall team standings at Saturday’s RIT Invitational. Freshman Donnie VanBuren (Onteora, 2011) finished 5th at 157, while Vinny Barber (Highland, 2010) took 6th at 285. Barber just returned to practice on Wednesday after missing 4 weeks with a knee injury. Great job both guys! The Hofstra Pride won seven of the ten bouts enroute to recording a 25-12 victory over Wisconsin. The Hoftra (1-0) win was the first for new Head Wrestling Coach Rob Anspach. Wisconson dropped to 5-1 on the season.
One of the Pride’s victories came from 2009 Monroe Woodbury graduate Jamie Franco. Franco, a 133 lb. red-shirt sophomore, recored a 4-3 vicyory on an escape in the first tiebreaker. For the complete story and all individual results click on the link below.
Hofstra University red-shirt sophomore Jamie Franco placed 6th at 133 pounds in 2011 Binghamton Open held on Sunday in the West Gymnasium on the campus of SUNY Binghamton. Franco, a 2009 Monroe Woodbury graduate, went 4-3 on the day. Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, 11/20, in a home match against Wisconsin. Intermat Wrestling has released their pre-season high school rankings for the 2011-2012 season. Somers High School (Section 1) senior Brian Realbuto was selected as the top 152 pound wrestler in the nation. Realbuto, who will be attending Cornell University next fall, is a 2X New York State champion and also was a freestyle gold medalist in Fargo this past summer. Pennsylvania dominated the rankings with 5 wrestlers grabbing top honors including sophomore phenom Chance Marsteller at 160 pounds. Marsteller, who went undefeated last year in winning the state title as a freshman at 152 pounds, is already considered by many to be the best pound for pound wrestler in the country. 2006 Saugerties graduate Dennis Bermudez has reached the finals of the Spike TV reality series The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). The winner of TUF 14 Finale will receive a contract to fight in the UFC. Bermudez won his semi-final bout over Akira Corassani by forcing a first round submission via guillotine choke. TUF 14 Finale takes place on December 3, 2011 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. Good luck to Dennis….the entire Section 9 wrestling community will be rooting for you!
2007 Minisink Valley graduate Jeremiah Biddle has been named one of the team captains for Division 1 Bloomsburg University. Biddle was named captain along with Frank Hickman, Zac Walsh, and Mike Dessino. Bloomsburg Head Coach John Stutzman said of his selections, “With each of these individuals I feel they will lead us in a very positive way. They all have a great work ethic and they represent BU wrestling on and off the mat with great pride. Their attitude and work ethic are contagious and we look forward to the up coming year!” Congratulations Jeremiah! You’ve made Section 9 proud!
