Eastport South Manor 8th grader Adam Busiello is a returning state finalist at this weight and he is ranked as one of the best middle school wrestlers in the nation.  The only blemish on his record this year is an 8-6 loss in the ESC finals to another nationally ranked wrestler, Beau Bartlett of Wyoming Seminary.  Another wrestler to watch here is Newark Valley 8th grader Benny Baker who placed 6th at 99 last season.  Baker’s only two losses came at the ESC to CT stud Jakob Camacho.  South Sides’s Kyle Mosher only lost to Baker 4-3 at ESC and should be in the hunt as well, and do not sleep on Mitchell Seaver from Lockport. Seaver’s only loss came when he was pinned by Willie McDougal from Niagara Falls who he then majored one week later!  East Ramapo junior Trey Wardlaw is 45-0 and could contend for a medal.

Section 3: Kelan McKenna (New Hartford)      PSAL: Joe Marino (Tottenville)

Section 8: Jacori Teemer (Long Beach)            At Large 3: Jacob Ruggeri (Fairport)
Section 9: Connor Greiner (Minisink Valley)  At Large 4: Randy Earl (JJEF)

This weight is stacked!  Teemer, McKenna, Silverstein, and Cox are all nationally ranked!  Sparacio, who placed 4th at 99 last year, is right there with all of them!  Teemer is undefeated this year and posted 1-0 wins over McKenna and Silversten at the ESC.  McKenna’s loss to Teemer was his only hiccup this season.  Silverstein is 2-2 against Cox this year, beat Sparacio 3X by the scores SV-fall, 7-5 SV, and 4-3. Cox only has two in-state losses, both to Silverstein plus he came in 2nd at the Super 32.  There are several other to watch here as well.  Sulla took McKenna to SV before losing at ESC.  Earl has wins over Sulla and Greiner.  Greiner’s only loss has been to Earl.  Bardanis has a win over Sulla.  There is no such thing as a “good draw” at 106…if you make it to the medal stand, you’ve earned it!

Section 1: Jay Albis (John Jay East Fishkill)       Section 10: Ryan Brown (Canton)
Section 2: Christian Gramuglia (Burnt Hills)     Section 11: John Arceri (Huntington)
Section 3: Ian McKenna (New Hartford)            PSAL: Malik Grant (Curtis)
Section 4: Noah Carpenter (Elmira)                    CHSAA: Tito Colom (St. Francis)
Section 5: Austin Hertel (Hilton)                          At Large 1: Joel Zambrano (Mepham)
Section 6: Ryan Burns (Clarence)                         At Large 2: Jemone Carter (N. Falls)
Section 8: Kyle Quinn (Wantagh)                         At Large 3: Phil Spadafora (HHHE)
Section 9: Pedro Rosales (Middletown)              At Large 4: Anthony Cirillo (Rocky Pt)

Wantagh senior Kyle Quinn was a finalist last year and was the NYS champion at 106 on 2013.  His only loss this year is a 2-1 decision in the finals of the ESC to D2 wrestler Matteo DeVincenzo.  One of Quinn’s wins at ESC was over Jay Albis who finished 4th in NYS at 113 last season. Albis was injured during the match and did not wrestle again until the sectional qualifier. Huntington’s John Arceri is no stranger to Albany and he is having a great season. His only loss of the year was at the hands of D2 wrestler Chris Cirigliano.  Arceri had a couple of very narrow wins over Suffolk wrestlers Anthony Cirillo (2-1 ot, twice) and Phil Spadafora (1-0) who will also be in the hunt.  Tito Colom placed 4th in NYS (D2) and Jemone Carter placed 6th in NYS last year, while Ryan Burns, Christian Gramuglia, and Malik Grant are returning qualifiers.  Hilton’s Austin Hertel is very talented and could surprise some people up in Albany.

Section 1: Alex D’Angelo (North Rockland)       Section 10: Skyler Cameron (Massena)
Section 2: John Devine (Columbia)                     Section 11: Ed Matyka (Riverhead)
Section 3: Audey Ashkar (Liverpool)                   PSAL: Shane Leguillow (GS Campus)
Section 4: Derek Osman (Vestal)                          CHSAA: Chris Martorello (Fordham)
Section 5: Yianni Diakomihalis (Hilton)             At Large 1: Vinny Vespa (MW)
Section 6: Donny McCoy (Niagara Falls)           At Large 2: Peter Pappas (Plainview)
Section 8: Alexander Vargas (Syosset)               At Large 3: Anthony Argentieri (KW)
Section 9: Gerard Daly (Minisink Valley)          At Large 4: Hector Guerrero (Plainedge)

Yianni Diakomihalis is a 2X defending state champ and he is currently ranked 3rd in the nation at 120 pounds.  This is a tough weight class with several very talented wrestlers, but if anyone besides Yianni wins 120, it will make national headlines in the wrestling community!  Peter Pappas was Yianni’s opponent in the state finals last year and is having another outstanding season.  He was, however, picked off in the S8 finals by Alexander Vargas from Syosset.  Monroe Woodbury senior Vinny Vespa, who is headed to West Point after graduation, finished 3rd at 106 last year and has only been beaten once this season.  Vespa’s loss came in the Section 9 finals to 3X Section 9 champ Gerard Daly of Minisink Valley who is poised to make a run at the podium.  North Rockland’s Alex D’Angelo is having a great season including a win over the aforementioned Vargas.  Section 6 is also well represented at 120 with two former state qualifiers in Donny McCoy (Niagara Falls) and Anthony Argentieri (Kenmore West).

126 Pounds
The Field

Section 1: Kevin Knox (Carmel)                          Section 10: Gavin Perrine (Massena)
Section 2: Max Tempel (Averill Park)               Section 11: Nick Piccininni (Ward Mel)
Section 3: Mitchell Woodworth (Fulton)         PSAL: Brandon Santiago (Madison)
Section 4: Tyler Brazinski (Johnson City)       CHSAA: Ben Lamantia (St. Anthony’s)
Section 5: Parker Kropman (Penfield)             At Large 1: Anthony Orefice (Lockport)
Section 6: Connor Day (Iroquois)                     At Large 2: Dominic Inzana (Saratoga)
Section 8: Sam Goldman (Port Wash.)            At Large 3: Reaco Jackson (Westbury)
Section 9: Kevin Kelly (Monroe Woodbury)   At Large 4: Tommy Lancie (Schroeder)

Similar to 120, 126 is a very strong weight with one clear favorite.  Oklahoma State bound Nick Piccininni from Ward Melville is a 3X NYS Champion and is currently ranked #2 in the nation at this weight. Although the favorite, Piccininni is certainly not a “shoe-in.”  126 has another nationally ranked wrestler in the field in Ben Lamantia from St. Anthony’s.  The two had a very tight match in the state semis last year. Could this be the year that Lamantia beats him?  Parker Kropman from Section 5 Penfield finished 4th in NYS last year and will definitely be in the mix!  Anthony Orefice is another wrestler who is no stranger to Albany but he was pinned in his Section 6 final by Iroquois’ Connor Day.  Monroe Woodbury junior Kevin Kelly may make some noise here as well.  Kelly is undefeated against NYS wrestlers this season with his only loss being a 6-5 decision to Ed Lovely from CT.  Mitchell Woodworth from Fulton has been to the big dance before and he is as tough as nails.

The Field

Section 1: Daiton Powell (Suffern)                       Section 10: Michael Brown (Massena)
Section 2: Kyle Jasenski (Albany Academy)      Section 11: Jesse Dellavecchia (E. Islip)
Section 3: Dempsey King (New Hartford)         PSAL: William Yee (Information Tech)
Section 4: Isaiah Colgan (Johnson City)            CHSAA: Matt Seitz (Monsignor Farrell)
Section 5: Zack Barker (Fairport)                        At Large 1: Da’mani Burns (NFA)
Section 6: Fred Eckles (Lake Shore)                   At Large 2: Kevin Marcano (Victor)
Section 8: Vito Arujau (Syosset)                          At Large 3: James Szymanski (SWR)
Section 9: Evan Barczak (Mon. Wood.)             At Large 4: Matt Grippi (Fox Lane)

Vito Arujau was the 113 pound state champ last year, he is nationally ranked at #7 at 132, and he is undefeated this year having scored bonus points in nearly all of his matches.  Yeah he’s pretty good!  One of the wrestlers he has yet to face however is fellow Long Islander Jesse Dellavechia from East Islip.  Dellavechia finished 2nd in NYS at 120 last season behind Piccininni and, like Arujau, is undefeated so far this season.  Da’mani Burns from NFA finished 5th in NYS last season and was “on fire” this season having only one loss (at ESC to Arujua)…..that is until the Section 9 finals when he was shocked by Monroe Woodbury Evan Barczak 8-1!    Barczak also hold a victory over Grippi from Section 1.  Two other wrestlers who could go very high on the podium are Dempsey King from New Hartford and Daiton Powell from Suffern, both of whom placed at this years Eastern States Classic.  James Szymanski from Section 11 is is as tough as they get and could make some noise in Albany this year.

The Field

Section 1: Brady Robin (Arlington)                   Section 10: Jesse Patraw (Massena)
Section 2: Eoghan Sweeney (Niskayuna)        Section 11: Mike D’Angelo (Commack)
Section 3: Nick Toutant (Indian River)           PSAL: Steven Prinston (Brooklyn Tech)
Section 4: Richie Burke (Ithaca)                       CHSAA:  Ronaldo Rodriguez (Xaverian)

Section 6: Tristan Almeter (Iroquois)              At Large 2: James Matias (Rocky Point)
Section 8: Ricky Stamm (Division)                  At Large 3: Naquan Warren (Farmingdale)
Section 9: Chris Truglio (Minisink Valley)     At Large 4: Owen Bachelder (Hewlett)

138 has two wrestlers who finished 3rd in NYS last year and two who finished 4th!  Mike D’Angelo from Commack is currently ranked 15th in the nation by Flo and sports a 45-1 record.  His only loss came in the finals of the Eastern States Classic when he dropped a 4-3 UTB decision to Penfield freshman Frankie Gissendanner.  Gissendanner is a perfect 36-0 this season and has victories over D’Angelo, Wade, and Matias.  He placed 4th at 132 last year.  Islip’s Brad Wade is another wrestler who will right in the hunt for a title. Wade placed 3rd at 132 last season and only has two losses this year – to Gissendanner and D’Angelo.  Ithaca’s Richie Burke finished 4th in NYS at 126 last season.  Although coming off an injury that put him on the shelf for a month, Burke is dangerous and could place high.  138 has two other wrestlers who are undefeated so far this season – Chris Truglio and Ricky Stamm.  Truglio, a Minisink Valley senior, is a 3X Section 9 champion and is hoping to make his first trip to the medal stand while Stamm, a junior from Division, has a victory over D2 stud Sam Ward this season.

Section 1: Danny Murphy (Ketcham)             Section 10: Austin Amo (Massena)
Section 2: Joe Clemente (LaSalle)                  Section 11: Tommy Dutton (Rocky Point)
Section 3: Tristan Broddus (Fayetteville)     PSAL: Steven Kim (Cardozo)
Section 4: Julian Korfine (Ithaca)                  CHSAA: Adam Santoro (Fordham Prep)
Section 5: Mike LaLoggia (Schroeder)          At Large 1: Mike Raccioppi (Minisink)
Section 6: Kyle Liuzzo (Jamestown)              At Large 2: Hunter Hulse (West. Beach)
Section 8: Jake Einbinder (Bethpage)          At Large 3: Jack Taddeo (SWR)
Section 9: Ryan Ferro (Warwick)                  At Large 4: Grant Frederick (JJEF)

Thomas Dutton is undefeated this year and is ranked 10th in the nation by Flo.  The Rocky Point senior, who is heading to Harvard after graduation, is hoping to improve upon last season’s 5th place NYS finish. Dutton’s biggest test this year came from Minisink Valley’s Mike Raccioppi up at the UE Duals where Dutton earned the 4-3 victory.  Raccioppi, a 4X state qualifier, needed a wildcard to get to Albany however because lost in the Section 9 finals to Warwick sophomore Ryan Ferro by a 7-4 margin.  Bethpage senior Jake Einbinder placed 6th in NYS last season at 138 and is 32-2 this season.  Ketcham’s Danny Murphy is also very tough and has a victory over Ferro as has Section 11’s Taddeo. Fordham Prep’s Adam Santoro’s only loss this year has come via injury time.  He was out for a few weeks and has run the table since his return.  We should also look out for Section 5 champ Mike LaLoggia.

Section 1: Stephen Lauro (Suffern)               Section 10: Hunter Perrine (Massena)
Section 2: Jesse Porter (Shenendehowa)     Section 11: Jakob Restrepo (Sachem East)
Section 3: Blake Engebretsen (Central Sq)  PSAL: Andrew Nicosia (Cardozo)
Section 4: Robert Mastronardi (Vestal)        CHSAA: Ralph Maio (Monsignor Farrell)
Section 5: Anthony Bell (Fairport)                 At Large 1: Matt Porello (John Glenn)
Section 6: Kirk Feeney (Lockport)                  At Large 2: Tristan Ierlan (Victor)
Section 8: Elias Kokalis (Great Neck So)      At Large 3: Kyle Pittman (Spencerport)
Section 9: Thomas Wightman (Warwick)    At Large 4: Matt McHugh (Columbia)

There are several top-notch wrestlers in this weight class but all evidence points towards a showdown between Jakob Restrepo from Sachem East and Jesse Porter from Shenendehowa.  Restrepo is undefeated, ranked nationally at #16 by Flo, and has a 2-1 victory over Porter in the semis of the Eastern States Classic.  Porter has a 40-3 record, has freak strength, and has beaten Restrepo in the off-season.  It could be a classic! These two will not go unchallenged though!  Thomas Wightman from Warwick only has two losses all season – both to Porter.  One was a fft and the other was a hard fought 5-1 decision for Porter at the ESC.  Anthony Bell from Fairport is 43-1 with his only loss coming from D2 stud Dakota Gardner, and Kirk Feeney from Lockport is 33-5 on the season.  Section 8’s Elias Kokalis can’t be overlooked either.  His only loss on the season was to defending state champ Chris Mauriello up at 160!

Section 1: Blaise Benderoth (N. Rockland)    Section 10: Gavin Thornton (Canton)
Section 2: Tyler Barnes (Ballston Spa)           Section 11: Brandon Aviles (J. Glenn)
Section 3: Jerrett Norton (Central Square)   PSAL: Ramel McIntosh (MLK)
Section 4: Vinnie Darpino (Newark Valley)  CHSAA: Addrian Ferrarie (Mt. St. Michael)
Section 5: Louie DePrez (Hilton)                     At Large 1: Chris Mauriello Hauppauge
Section 6: Dylan Lundmark (Jamestown)     At Large 2: Brandon Bruttomesso (SGF)
Section 8: Charles Tsakh (Hewlett)                At Large 3: Brandon Mendez (Huntington)
Section 9: AJ Aeberli (Minisink Valley)         At Large 4: Jeremy Hughes (MacArthur)

160 pounds will be very hotly contested as there are several competitors who have a legitimate shot to take the title here!  Brandon Aviles from John Glenn is definitely one of those in the hunt.  Aviles’ only lost this season this year has been at the ESC to Chris Weiler from Wyoming Seminary, the 7th ranked wrestler in the nation at 160.  Two of Aviles wins this season has been to last year’s 132 state champion Chris Mauriello from Hauppauge.  Mauriello is up to 160 this season and has looked sharp!  His two losses to Aviles this season have been 1-point decisions (both 4-3). His only other loss this season was a 1-0 decision to Hilton’s Lou Deprez who is also at 160 this year! Deprez, only a sophomore, placed 3rd in the state last year and has a 41-3 record this year – all three were at the Eastern States Classic, and all three were very close matches.   Deprez lost 4-2 to Aviles, 3-1 to MA stud Jonathan Viruet, and 1-0 to Blaise Benderoth from North Rockland. Benderoth, who finished 3rd NYS at 152 last year, is 44-2 this season with both of his losses coming at the ESC as well.  Benderoth dropped a 1-0 decision to Viruet as well as a 7-5 decision to D2 defending state champ Alex Herringshaw.  Minisink Valley’s AJ Aeberli is also going to be right in the mix at 160.  His only loss this year was a 3-1 SV decision to Herringshaw.  Addrian Ferrarie and Charles Tsakh both have outstanding records and have wrestled close matches with several wrestlers on the board.  This weight will be a blast to watch!

Section 8: Anthony Fitzsimmons (Calhoun)   At Large 3: Alec Guevara (Wallkill)
Section 9: Quinn Zsido (Cornwall)                    At Large 4: Joe Puca (Huntington)

170 is definitely one of the most wide open weights at this years D1 state tournament.  If we had to declare a favorite it may be Kevin Parker from Shenendehowa. Parker has a few losses this year but none to any of the wrestlers in the field.  He also has wins over Spallina, Schwab, and Zsido.  Cornwall’s Quinn Zsido placed 6th at 170 in NYS last season and has wins over Guevara and Race.  Clarence’s Nate Schwab is a returning state qualifier and has had a great year posting wins over Spallina, McPherson, Zsido, and Bisono.  Indian River’s Sonny McPherson is very solid and has recorded wins over Race and Puca this year while Race has wins over McPherson and Spallina.  Certainly not to be overlooked is Calhoun’s Anthony Fitzsimmons who is a perfect 36-0 this season and a few wins over fellow Section 8 wrestler Dan Arkow!

Section 8: Tom Lane (Garden City)           At Large 3: Bruce McLee (Washingtonville)
Section 9: Kendall Elfstrum (MW)             At Large 4: Marcus Bisono (Hauppauge)

Deer Park’s David Hamil has had an outstanding season and is definitely one of the favorites at 182 going into this year’s state tournament.  He is 43-1 and his only loss came in the finals of the Eastern States Classic – a 3-2 decision to former New York wrestler Christian Dietrich who now wrestles for Wyoming Seminary.  Hamil also has posted victories over several other competitors in the field including Lane, Ashcraft, Bisono, and Jones.  Tom Lane from Section 8’s Garden City is having a great season as well.  His only losses this year have been to Hamil and Ashcraft.  He also has a win over Ashcraft as well as victories over Bromley and Jones.  Burnt Hills’ Jake Ashcraft is an athletic, talented wrestler who will be right in the mix.  Ashcraft has wins over Lane, Bisono, Dubuque, and DiNardo.  Section 9 has two very tough entries at 182 in Monroe Woodbury sophomore Kendall Elfstrum and Washingtonville’s Bruce McLee.

Section 6: Mitch Currey (Ken West)         At Large 2: Tom Stevenson (Smithtown East)
Section 8: Andrew Rakitzis (Plainedge)  At Large 3: Chris Bosco (John Glenn)
Section 9: Nick McShea (MW)                   At Large 4: Bryan Beyers (Washingtonville)

Here we have another weight class were there are a few people who may be considered slight favorites then several others who have the potential to get into the mix for a top 6 finish.  Ward Melville’s Christian Araneo is clearly one of the favorites here.  His only loss this season came at the Eastern States to D2 stud Nathanael Rose.  He has victories, some very convincing, over Pjetri, Stevenson, and Bosco.  One wrestler that he has not faced this season is Monroe Woodbury junior Nick McShea.  McShea is undefeated thus far this season and has wins over Bosco and Beyers.  Cameron Caldarelli from Brockport is a tough wrestler who will definitely get into the fray at 195. Although he has not wrestled any wrestlers in the field, he is undefeated this year sporting a 36-0 record.  Deny Tavarez from Freeport was undefeated until being pinned in the Section 8 finals by Andrew Rakitzis, and we should also keep an eye on Washingtonville’s Bryan Beyers who was also undefeated prior to dropping a close decision to McShea in the Section 9 finals.

Section 9: Brandon Mascaro (Wallkill)             At Large 4: Solomon Renfro (Canisius)

New York State has two nationally ranked wrestlers at 220 in Yousiff Hemida (#6) and Vin Feola (#20).  Mamaroneck senior Hemida is undefeated this season and has two wins over Feola and three over Cvijanovich.  He is clearly the favorite on paper but all of these victories have been very close matches.  Feola has been extremely good this season as well.  He has the two losses to Hemida and has also split two meetings with S11 wildcard Anthony DiMatteo. DiMatteo only has a few losses this season but one of them has been to Monsignor Farrell’s Mike Newman.  Newman’s only losses this season have come at the Eastern States and both were to Wyoming Seminary’s Harrison Nye.  He will be right in the mix in Albany.

Section 9: Isaac Serrano (NFA)                  At Large 4: Jon Solorzano (Lindenhurst)

Going into the state qualifying tournaments, John Glenn senior Edwin Rubio seemed like the favorite to win the state title at 285 in D1.  He was undefeated, he won the ESC by defeating nationally-ranked Mike Rogers from Wyoming Seminary, and he has recorded wins over several wrestlers in the field.  However…Sachem East senior Sean Dee pulled of the upset at the S11 finals and defeated Rubio 3-2 UTB.  Dee is 45-3 and has shown a great knack for winning tight matches.  Two of Dee’s three losses though have been to another wrestler in the field, Nolan Terrence from Massena.  Terrence is 37-1 with his only loss being a 3-2 OT loss to Rubio at Eastern States.  Another wrestler to watch is Erik Jessell from Section 3 Carthage.  Jessell, who finished 6th in NYS at 195 last year while wrestling for Section 9’s Cornwall, is 36-1 this season and his only loss has been to D2 wrestler Austin Dean.  Cameron Rohr from Irondequoit has been dominating this year.  His only loss was via DQ to Joe Fuino.  Rohr pinned Fuino in a match later in the year. Ryan Delahanty, Isaac Serrano, Monair McDonald and Nikola Cejic have had great years as well and will be in the hunt for a medal as well.

Section 9 Division 1 Tournament Preview

This year’s state qualifying tournament will be a barn-burner…plain and simple!  The 2015 Division 1 Wrestling Championships will take place on Friday 2/13 and Saturday 2/14 at Monroe Woodbury High School.  We can anticipate great matches in every weight class as well as a team race that may not be decided until late Saturday!  Below is a preview of each weight.  Please keep in mind that “11th hour” weight class changes frequently occur so the below weight class assignments may not be 100% accurate.

99
Rarely do we so so much returning talent at the lightest weight class.  Until recently, many of us in S9 had Minisink Valley’s Jarred Greiner as the favorite with Middletown’s Oscar Lainez and Monroe Woodbury’s Marco Vespa nipping at his heels.  All of that changed on January 14th when Wallkill sophomore Andrew Davis cradled and pinned Greiner!  Lainez has been scratched from 99 which slides Goshen’s Frank Fea into the 4 seed. All four of these wrestlers are talented!  99 pounds is always fun to watch and this year it should be better than ever!

106
With Anthony Stramiello deciding to go 113, Minisink Valley freshman Connor Greiner has to been considered the clear favorite at this weight.  He has been very impressive and seems to be improving as the season has progressed.  Do not discount VC’s Robert Satriano though! He is very tough and his only three losses this year have been to Stramiello (6-4), Greiner (7-0) and Davis (Satriano was winning 4-1 before getting pinned).

113
The addition of Pine Bush junior Anthony Stramiello has made 113 a very tough weight! He will likely take on the winner of Valley Central’s Tyler Lynch and Middletown’s Pedro Rosales.  These two locked horns recently with Lynch coming away the victor via a 9-6 decision.  Other’s to watch at 113 include Wallkill’s Brad Bonner and Saugerties’ Jamie Pulver.

120
The top two seeds at 120 have aspirations above and beyond a Section 9 title.  Monroe Woodbury senior Vinny Vespa finished 3rd in NYS last year at 106 and hopes to place even higher this year.  Vespa is 31-0 this season; two of his toughest matches though have been to Minisink Valley senior Gerard Daly.  Daly is a 2X state qualifier who has dropped two tight matches to Vespa this season (3-1, 4-2).  Assuming both wrestlers advance to the finals, this will be the most anticipated match of the evening.  MW’s Cameron Wernicki, Warwick’s Paul Ginley and Wallkill’s Gus Formato have been coming on strong at the end of the season and will definitely be in the medal hunt.

126
Monroe Woodbury junior Kevin Kelly is having an awesome season and is the clear favorite at 126.  Kelly is 35-1 with his only loss coming to an out-of-state wrestler.  One wrestler he has not faced, however, is Wallkill senior Logan Losito.  Losito is a 2X sectional placewinner who has an OT victory over another contender at 126 Minisink Valley’s Matt Lopez.

132
Da’mani Burns is one of the best wrestlers in NYS…period! The NFA senior 39-1 with bonus points in nearly every match.  His only loss was to nationally ranked Vito Arujau of Section 8 Syosset.  Expect Burns, who finished 5th in NYS last season, to lock horns with a familiar foe in the finals as he will likely take on Monroe Woodbury’s Evan Barczak, a returning state qualifier.  These two have met twice this year with Burns getting the victory both times.  The first contest was  very close (3-1) but Burns won by fall in their second meeting.  Warwick’s Lucas Wightman and MV’s Tyler Mayo and Andrew Neidnig are wrestlers worth watching as well!

138
Minisink Valley senior Chris Truglio is 31-0 this season including several wins over kids who will wrestle in their state tournament this year.  Truglio is a 2X Section 9 champ and is looking to climb his way onto the podium in Albany this year.  One of the Section 9 wrestlers standing in Truglio’s way is Wallkill senior Nick Sebesta.  Also keep an eye on MW’s Matt Bracco, Saugerties’ Biko Skalla, and VC’s Dan Romano.

145
This is another weight class where Section 9 is blessed with two wrestlers who have a legitimate shot at placing in the state tournament.  Warwick Valley sophomore Ryan Ferro and Minisink Valley senior Mike Raccioppi have both been to Albany before and they’ve both been very close to placing!  The two have met once this year with Ferro earning the victory 6-4 SV.  Washingtonville’s Brandon Bobe and VC’s Mack Phillips will also make some noise at this weight!

152
Warwick senior Thomas Wightman is 36-2 this season and is the heavy favorite at 152 in Section 9 this year.  Both of his losses this year have been to Section 2 stud Jesse Porter – once by 5-1 decision, once by fft.  The best chances for challenging Wightman would come from Port Jervis’ Hunter Curreri, MW’s Brandon Lewis,  NFA junior Mike DeCapua, and Kingston’s Nijee Noble (lost 1-0 to Wighman this year).

160
Perhaps the heaviest favorite to win his weight class at this year’s tournament is Minisink Valley junior AJ Aeberlie.  He has a 39-1 record and has a first period pin over second seeded Andrew Tully from Monroe Woodbury.  Tully earned the second seed by beating Middletown’s Christian Matos 9-7 earlier in January.  Port Jervis’ Nate Cohen has been coming on strong and will definitely be in contention for a high placing this year.

170
Returning state place winner Quinn Zsido from Cornwall is the solid favorite at 170 but he will not walk through this weight!  Wallkill senior Alec Guevara has given Zsido all he could handle twice this year.  In their most recent meeting, Quinn needed a sudden victory take down to get the win.  Minisink Valley senior Nick Wentland, who lost a very close 3-1 match to Guevara in January, will also be in the hunt.

182
Arguably the deepest weight class in the tournament, 182 has at least 5 wrestlers with a legitimate chance to win.  Minisink Valley senior Deonte Moore is the top seed and has narrow victories over several of the other contenders including Washingtonville’s Bruce McLee, Monroe Woodbury’s Marcello Gennaro, and MW’s second entry Kendall Elfstrum.  Wallkill sophomore Mike Fekishazy will also make some noise at 182 and has the potential to win it all.

195
It is tough to argue against making Nick McShea the heavy favorite here.  The Monroe Woodbury junior is a returning S9 champ and he is a perfect 35-0 for the season including some wins over highly regarded competition.  McShea, however, has yet to lock horns with Washingtonville senior Bryan Beyers who is a perfect 30-0 on the season.  This may be a good one!  Beyer’s teammate Keyon Milner is very talented and could also get into the mix!

220
Middletown junior Joe Humphrey and Wallkill senior Brandon Mascaro are on a crash course for a third meeting this season!  Humphrey won the first match 4-2 at the Eastern States Classic while Mascaro won the rematch a few weeks later at the Gene Brigham when Humphrey suffered a cut near his eye and ran out of injury time.  Humphrey is 31-4 and has some impressive wins including a 6-4 win over Fargo AA Garyn Huntley.  Mascaro is 28-2 with his only losses coming at the Eastern States Tournament.  Also watch out for Saugerties senior Nathan Donah who is 28-2 and won the Mid-Hudson Tournament this season.

285
NFA senior Isaac Serrano has been the guy to beat all season at 285!  He is 37-3 and all three losses have been to top-notch wrestlers.  He also has wins over his top two challengers from Section 9, John Demy from Wallkill who is 22-4 and Jonathan Zambrano from Valley Central who is 19-7.  Serrano has a legitimate chance of stepping onto the medal stand in Albany!
