Monroe and Minisink Hoping For Another All S9 Final!
This Saturday and Sunday, Monroe Woodbury and Minisink Valley are two of sixteen teams that will be competing in the invite only UE Duals. Last year the two S9 powerhouse programs were the last two teams standing at UE with the Warriors coming out on top to win the tournament. Year after year, this tournament attracts the best dual meet teams in NYS, and has thus earned the distinction of being called the “Unofficial NYS Dual Meet Championship.” This year is no exception! Below is a tournament preview and schedule. I am also including a few “possible match-ups” for each pool. Keep in mind that this a dual meet tournament so some of these match-ups may not occur as coaches will juggle their lineups in an effort to give their team the best shot at winning the dual. Good luck to both teams!
2016 UE Duals – Pool Assignments and Schedule
Pool A: Monroe (9), Massapequa (8), Brentwood (11), Phoenix (3)
MW will be the heavy favorite to come out of this pool. The undefeated Crusaders are the #1 ranked dual meet team in NYS according to the NYS Sportswriters Association, and they are also ranked #32 in the nation by InterMat. Their stiffest competition from the pool will likely come from Massapequa who are undefeated thus far and have already notched dual meet wins over two of the teams competing in the tournament, Patch-Med and MacArthur. Brentwood is always a tough team and you can never count out Phoenix who are coached by former Olympian Gene Mills!
Possible Individual Match-Ups from Pool A
Garrett Gibbons (Mass) vs Kevin Kelly (MW)
Nick McShea (MW) vs Paul Bratchfeld (Mass)
Marco Vespa (MW) vs Cahal Donovan (Phoenix)
Pool B: Wantagh (8), Shen (2), Brockport (5), Farmingdale (8)
Wantagh is considered the favorite here however they will have no cake-walk! Wantagh, currently ranked #2 NYS by NYSSWA, has ripped through the competition thus far this season. Shenendehowa is a perennial Section 2 power and they have a nice solid lineup which includes nationally ranked 182 pound Princeton-bound Kevin Parker. Section 5’s Brockport also has a very balanced lineup while Farmingdale, undefeated in duals this year, cannot be overlooked.
Possible Individual Match-Ups from Pool B
Kevin Parker (Shen) vs Cam Calderelli (Brock)
Kevin Parker (Shen) vs Alexander Pavlock (Farm)
Alexander Pavlock (Farm) vs Cam Calderelli (Brock)
Justin Vines (Want) vs Cody Duel (Shen)
Justin Vines (Want) vs Kevin DePalma (Farm)
Kevin DePalma (Farm) vs Cody Duel (Shen)
Pool C: Long Beach (8), Minisink (9), Pat-Med (11), UE (4)
Minisink Valley are the defending tournament champions and they are currently ranked #3 in NYS but most people would consider them the underdog versus the top seed in the pool Long Beach. The Warriors have a great core and some surprisingly tough first-year varsity wrestlers…but Long Beach is absolutely loaded from 120-220 including a 2X state champion in Jacori Teemer. This will be a fun one to watch. Patch-Med has looked very good but they have dropped a few duals already as has host UE.
Possible Individual Match-Ups from Pool C
AJ Aeberli (MV) vs Tyrese Byron (LB)
Tyler Lynch (MV) vs Rick Chastine (UE)
Josh Bourne (LB) vs Jarred Greiner (MV)
Pool D: Rocky Point (11), Hilton (5), Fulton (3), MacArthur (8)
This may be the most well balanced of all of the pools. Rocky Point has a very solid lineup with very few holes and a lot of flexibility. Hilton’s lineup may have a few holes but it is also has some serious star power! Yianni Diakomihalis is a 3X state champ, a Cadet World champ, and is one of the top 10 P4P wrestlers in the nation. Like Yianni, Louie Deprez is also nationally ranked at his weight (170) and is a bonus point machine. Fulton is the top ranked D1 team in S3 while MacArthur is always tough and well coached. This pool will be very entertaining to watch.
Possible Individual Match-Ups from Pool D
Anthony Cirillo (RP) vs Austin Hertel (Hil)
A. Sciotto (RP) vs G. Diakomihalis (Hil)
Wyatt Willis (Ful) vs Anthony Cirillo (RP)
Wyatt Willis vs Austin Hertel (Hilton)
CJ Archer (RP) vs Tim Holden (Fulton)
Lou Deprez (Hil) vs Jeremy Hughes (Mac)
Travis Race (Ful) vs Jeremy Hughes (Mac)
Louie Deprez (Hil) vs Travis Race (Fulton)
*Yianni D – Just watch him wrestle; he’s that good!*
Awesome Mike. Thank you!
Thanks Adam! Looking forward to seeing you guys this weekend!
