  1. FYI, you have a broken link for Section 9 Division 1 State Qualifiers. Its going to your Word Press login page instead.

As a fellow web designer, I figured I would let you know (definitely easy enough to do lol). As a parent of Section 9, Thanks for all the work you put in to the site.

    Thanks
    Chris

  2. Great work with all that you do! Thank you for your dedication and time!
I wonder what the record is for most team points in the sections? Minisinks total points are astonishing.

    1. 1. 2020 Minisink Valley – 370 points
      2. 2022 Minisink Valley – 369 points
      3. 2023 Minisink Valley – 323.5 points
      4. 2018 Minisink Valley – 312.5 points
      5. 2005 Valley Central – 304.5 points

      1. Having attended wrestling matches since the early ’70’s I cannot recall the frequency of tech falls and falls in both the Division 1 and Division 2 matches . Is this a post-Covid anomaly or an indication of the skill level separation between the top wrestlers and the rest of the field ?

      1. Mike, Amazing work, you should work for S.I. Life was prewildcard . The 102 pound class has six long islanders. I remember in 1977, one of the section nine wrestlers had a bye first round, section ten quarters, then he beat the section 11 guy in the semis and was in the finals where he lost Tom Pickard of Baldwinsville. And yes, that was the year that Ed, Steve, and Lou were wrestling simultaneously in the semis. (The golden age of section nine wrestling.)

  3. Mike amazing how you have a pulse on the entire state. Quite a void left with PJ’s injury. Waxing sentimentally about the glory days of section nine again, an amazing match took place in the 114 pound class on the South mat at Suffern HS in the 1977 championships on March 5, 1977. Under the tutelage of NYS hall of. fame coach and Port Jervis grad and 1966 Section IX champ and NYS place winner Mark Faller, Sophomore sensation Eric Savacool (You’ll remember his nephew Sean of Minisink Valley, led 3x defending Section nine champ and 1976 NYS runner-up Paul Pietropaulo 5-0 going into the third period but was unable to free himself. from the bottom position and lost by fall. Eric was a 1979 Section IX Champ at 132 and was a NYS place winner before wrestling at University of Kentucky for a year before they dropped the program in 1980.

    1. Mike, amazing analysis of the DII division. It’s fascinating to see how the DII wrestlers have stacked up against the D1 wrestlers throughout the season, especially since they do not go head to head in the states.
This match was ranked the fifth best NYS final from MAT SLAP.
Robin Parker (Caledonia-Mumford HS) pinned Mike Picozzi (Huntington HS) at 4:29 at 119 pounds in 1976. Parker was trailing,18-13, in one of the most exciting back-and-forth matches in state history, he was nearly pinned on two different occasions. Parker (30-1) avenged his only loss that season, as Picozzi defeated him in the Spencerport final,16-3. Parker used his flying cradle for the stunning fall and for his heroics was voted the MOW. Picozzi (Iowa State) was an All-American as he finished fifth at 118 pounds at the 1980 NCAAs.

  4. Sorry Mike, point I was trying to make in that post was that it was a small school-large school matchup with two of NY state’s premier wrestlers who were both returning place winners. Cal Mum is one of the smallest schools in the state and Huntington a large section XI school. Greg Diakomihalis did not face Anthony Noto at the states because of the small school – large school categories but under the format pre 2003 they would have faced off in the section V tournament, leaving one great wrestler out of the states entirely.

    1. That is one of the motivating factors for the Friends of Section 9 creating the Eastern States Classic. Over the years there have been many occasions where the eventual D1 champion and eventual D2 champion locked horns at the ESC!

  5. Yes, that is true!! Some other tournaments where NY state’s best have loved horns pre states were Windsor Christmas tournament, Kohl tournament in Suffern, and the Spencerport Lions Wrestling tournament where teams from Long Island and upstate duked it out. Also, some small school wrestlers moved up to large school competition ie Troy Nickerson Chenango Forks and J.P. O Conner won the last year that there was one division 2003, won division 2 in 2004, and moved up to large schools to win in 2005 and 2006 before (like Nickerson winning an NCAA title at an Ivy League school, Troy at Cornell and J.P. at Harvard.

  6. Yes and Troy is coaching at the University of North Colorado. Rob Koll once stated that Kyle Take was not the most talented wrestler he coached, but other wrestlers were hampered by injuries, I suspect he walking about Troy. Also my apologies to Section Nine and Port Jervis Nation, the Epic Eric Savacool – Paul Pietropaulo match was in 1976. Eric was a Frosh Phenom. That year Ed Banach moved up to 167 from 147 earlier in the year to capture a title as a sophomore. He would wrestle 157 the next year and 167 again his senior year.

  7. I read on Syracuse.com that two third place finishers from Liverpool were able to go as wildcards after finishing third in Section 3, Anthony Kelly and Jayce Bliss. The wrestlers from section ten 160 and 189 lbs were not going to go to the states and section 6 had first shot at the wildcards, there were no takers, so section three got the slots. Compare this to the old system, One division and no wildcards. Jim Carrera of Port Jefferson a five time runner-up in Section 11 losing twice in close matches to eventual state champs, and defending state champs that did not make to back to the states, The Earl brothers of Valley Stream Central in 1974 and 75. Both wrestlers had lost their first match and wrestled all the way back for 3rd. Also in section six Starpoint did not participate in the section three championships.
