Journeymen NYS Championships – Top Seeds and Brackets

Let’s take a look at the top 8 seeds at every weight class for the 2021 Journeymen NYS Wrestling Championships. The tournament is taking place on April 2nd and 3rd in Manheim, PA. These seeds can change if any seeded wrestlers withdraw or fail to make weight for the tournament.

Seeding this tournament was extremely difficult. Normally, a state tournament is seeded using results from the wrestler’s current season. Unless a wrestler is a defending state champion or high placewinner, very little “weight” is given to the results of prior years. Off-season results are not a factor in the current state seeding system. The current system allows for no subjectivity – it is a completely mathematical formula that requires no human opinions or input. Well….due to the fact that there really wasn’t much of a 2021 wrestling season, all of that went out the window! This tournament was seeded by a three-person committee which carefully evaluated each wrestler’s total body of work over the past 15+ months. Consideration was given to following: 2019-2020 regular season results, 2020 state qualifying tournaments, 2020 state championship tournaments, 2020/2021 off-season results, and the 2021 regular season when applicable. Is this a perfect system? Of course not…but I can say with absolute certainty that the committee made every effort to identify the top-8 wrestlers in every weight class. Please note – Journeymen Wrestling was NOT part of the seeding committee. Do not contact Frank or anyone else from Journeymen Wrestling if you have any questions about a seed.

2020-2021 Section 9 “Virtual” Championships

Since Section 9 was not able to have our Section 9 Championships this season due to Covid, our coaches had a seeding meeting and created a virtual championships. Trust me, everyone involved in this process wishes that our wrestlers were able to compete and have these championships the proper way – ON THE MAT! I guess this is the best we could do this year. Congratulations to all of our wrestlers.

NCAA Wrestling Championships

Section 9 has three former wrestlers who haver earned the privilege of competing in the 2021 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Eldred graduate Noah Curreri recently competed in the Division 2 Championships and became the first wrestler in school history to earn All-American status. Curreri, a senior at Queens University of Charlotte, took 8th in the nation at 174 pounds. The Division I tournament takes place on March 18-20 in St. Louis and Monroe Woodbury grads Vinny Vespa and Evan Barczak will be on the mat! Newburgh Free Academy – Senior Spotlight

The very talented NFA wrestling team was, unfortunately, not given permission to compete this season. The Goldbacks have six seniors on their roster so let’s take a minute to look at all of them in our NFA Senior Spotlight.

2nd S9 2020; 3rd S9 2019
Jaden Hansen

Jaden Hansen
Jaden is the embodiment of everything that is good about the sport of wrestling. He never wrestled in the youth circuits but he decided to give the sport a try as a freshman. I mean hey, why not…his great great grandfather was an Olympic wrestling champion! Hansen won only four matches as a freshman – three were via forfeit. He worked his tail off in the off season and put together an incredible 34-12 season as a sophomore and placed 3rd in Section 9 at 106. As a junior, Hansen took it to the next level and finished the season 41-5 and placed 2nd in Section 9 Championships to Andrew Marchese – Andrew eventually finished 5th in NYS. With a regular senior season, Jaden would have easily reached the 100 career win plateau – very impressive for a kid who stepped on the mat for the first time only 3 years ago! Jaden has decided to wrestle in college at Alfred State under Head Coach and former Section 9 wrestler Justin Signorelli.

2020 Eastern States Placer
Joe Russell

Joe Russell
This year would have been Russell’s 5th year wrestling for the Goldbacks. He saw limited action during his 8th grade and freshman years however he hit his stride in his sophomore year and finished 4th in the Section 9 tournament. His junior year was his breakout season where Russell posted an outstanding 43-3 record and placed 1st at the Mid Hudson Tournament, 5th at the Eastern States Classic, and 2nd at the Section 9 Championships. Joe has 83 career wins and is continuing his education and wrestling careers at the Steven’s Institute of Technology in New Jersey.

Section 9 Finalist
Conner Boyer

Conner Boyer
During the 2020 season Boyer wrestled as a “shadow” wrestler for NFA. This means he attended James I O’Neil but he was their only wrestler so he trained with NFA and went to matches and tournaments with the Goldbacks as an independent wrestler. This season Boyer was set to be a full-fledged member of the NFA wrestling team – until Covid 19 ended their season. Boyer went 21-6 last year, placed 3rd at the Mid-Hudson, and finished 2nd at the Section 9 Division 2 Championships.

145 Pounder Zachary Inman

Zachary Inman
Inman has been part of the Newburgh Free Academy wrestling program since his freshman year. After wrestling mostly junior varsity as a freshman and sophomore, Zachary cracked the starting lineup and picked up 5 wins for the Goldbacks during their very successful 2019-2020 season. Inman’s positive attitude and perseverance were contagious to his teammates and he was always a valuable member of the program.

138lb Section 9 Girls Champ
Carolyn Santiago

Carolyn Santiago
Carolyn was a two year member of the Newburgh Free Academy wrestling program. She wrestled a handful of junior varsity matches during her sophomore and junior seasons, but the defining moment of her high school career occurred last year when she won the 138 pound title at the inaugural Section 9’s Girls Championship Tournament. Carolyn was also very involved in NFA’s youth program, Future Stars, and she was instrumental in getting other girls interested in the sport of wrestling!

Section 9 Girls Silver Medalist
Gabrielle Colon

Gabrielle Colon
Gabrielle was a three year member of the NFA wrestling program. She picked a few wins in both junior varsity and varsity however her crowning jewel came during her junior season when she took home the silver medal at 170 pounds in the the first ever Section 9 Girls Wrestling Championship. Like her teammate Carolyn, Gabrielle was involved in the Future Stars Youth Program and helped recruit other girls into the sport of wrestling.

Wallkill – Senior Spotlight

Wallkill was unfortunately one of the Section 9 programs that was not able to compete this season. Let’s take a look at four Panthers who missed out on their senior season!

2X Section 9 Placewinner
Matt Davis

Matt Davis

Matt is a 2X All-Section wrestler who finished 6th in both 2018 and 2020. With 90 career wins, Davis would have definitely joined the 100 Career Win Club if NYS had a normal wrestling season. Matt has put in a lot of off-season work and is set to compete at the Journeymen NYS Championship tournament in Manheim, PA on April 2nd and 3rd. Davis plans on wrestling in college and has narrowed his choices to Cortland, Castleton, Brockport, and Ithaca.

2019 Section 9 4th Place
Justin Lyle

Justin Lyle

Justin was a 3 year starter for the Panthers and notched over 70 career wins in those 3 years. Lyle placed 4th in Section 9 at 182 pounds in 2019 and had several wins over sectional placewinners during the 2020 season including a 2nd place finish at the Mamaroneck Tournament.

Cael Atkins

Cael Atkins

Cael wrestled a few matches as a sophomore before cracking the starting lineup as a junior. Wrestling mostly at 160 pounds, Atkins notched 15 wins for the Panthers and had a 3rd place finish at the Mamaroneck Tournament.

James Hubbard

James Hubbard

After only wrestling a few matched as a freshman, James became a regular starter for the Panthers as both a sophomore and a junior. He finished his career with 30 varsity wins and placed 5th at the Mamaroneck Tournament in 2020.

Minisink Valley – Senior Spotlight

Nationally ranked Minisink Valley has six Seniors on this year’s roster – Adam Fenner, Scotty Geysen, Brian Lombardi, Jaccob Gonzalez, Devin Doty, and Rory Hamilton. Here are some team and individual highlights for the graduating senior class. These six seniors have put together an amazing four years of high school wrestling!

Adam Fenner 285lbs

2X NYSPHSAA Placewinner
Adam Fenner

Adam may go down as one of the most decorated heavy weights in MV wrestling history. Aside from a little youth wrestling in his younger days, Adam really didn’t start wrestling until 7th grade. This makes his accomplishments even more impressive.

Adam is unbelievably flexible for a heavy weight and wrestles like a light weight on the mat. He can wrestle out of many positions that many kids can not.

Adam’s accolades
2018 3rd in Sections
2019 Section 9 Champion
2019 5th in NYS
2020 3rd in Eastern States
2020 Section 9 Champion
2020 3rd in NYS
2x NHSCA All-American.
Ranked in the top 20 in various high school national rankings.
110-16 career record

Some huge moments in Adams wrestling career: Pinning the Fulton kid in the NYS duals finals, pinning the Brentwood kid in NYS to reverse a loss in the ESC, and beating the Hilton kid for 3rd place in NYS.

Adam is also an All state football player as well. Adam has the potential to be a force in both football and wrestling in college.

This will end a long run of having a Fenner as the heavy weight for the MV wrestling team. The whole Fenner family has done so much for the Minisink community and will be missed. However, we know they won’t be far away.

Scotty Geysen 189lbs

Geysen’s cradle helped MV win the NYSPHSAA Dual Championship

Scotty is also a journeyman of the MV wrestling program. He is the typical “Blue Collar” hard working kid that exemplifies MV wrestlers. His big strong hands allows him to slap the cradle on almost anyone. His unorthodox wrestling style at times gives his coaches a heart attack but he gets the job done in big moments.

A classic moment was the NYS duals final against Fulton. Scotty got a huge win that put the team in the driver’s seat to win the NYS Duals Championship.

Scotty is a 2x Section 9 place winner. This year he would have been in position to win his first Section title.

Scotty is a two sport athlete (football and wrestling). He has been accepted at East Stroudsburg University, Oswego, and Brockport. Best of Luck Scotty!

Section 9 Finalist
Brian Lombardi

Brian Lombardi 145lbs

Brian is the “Ultimate Warrior” of the MV wrestling program. Brian is a mat rat and always looking for someone to wrestle. At camp one year, Brian wrestled 30 matches over the 3 days. He would go to wrestling tournaments by himself just to get mat time.

Brian has an incredible record at MV wrestling but what is more valuable is his unwavering dedication to his teammates and team. Brian can always be seen helping younger wrestlers, warming up with teammates before the states, and helping with youth wrestling.

Brian has had some huge wins for the program over the years. Last year in the NYS duals semi finals, Brian had a huge pin that helped us reach the finals. Then in the finals. Brian had an overtime win that set the MV fans into a roar!

Brian does everything right. Any college wrestling program would be lucky to have him. One day, we will be calling him Dr. Lombardi!

Brian is a 2x Section 9 place finisher. Last year he was runner up to his teammate. Best of luck Brian!

Jaccob Gonzalez 152lbs

Gonzalez placed 3rd in Section 9
in 2020

Lightning fast, strong, and slick on his feet describe Jaccob Gonzalez. Jaccob was late starting the sport of wrestling. He really only started in 7th grade. He burst onto the scene his sophomore year by going undefeated 22-0 going to the ESC. Injuries have prevented him from having the success he deserves. A tireless worker in and out of the wrestling room has Jaccob set up for a stellar senior season.

Jaccob finished 3rd in Section 9 last season. He had a heartbreaking loss in the semi finals but showed his guts and character wrestling back for 3rd.

Last year, Jaccob battled with some of the best kids in the country out at the Clash. Jaccob has yet to hit his potential in the sport of wrestling.

Jaccob has committed to East Stroudsburg University to wrestle next year. Best of luck Jaccob!

Devin Doty 160lbs

Doty going for the pin!!!

Devin has been in the MV wrestling program since the 7th grade. He is the type of kid that every coach wants in his program. He can often be seen helping his teammates get in some extra reps and volunteering his time with the youth wrestling program over the last 4 years.

Devin’s work ethic in the classroom and upstanding character has afforded him the opportunity to apply to the United State Military Academy at West Point. He has also applied to Wilkes College.
Wherever Devin decides his future is, they will not be disappointed.

Devin’s academic accomplishments have earned him a spot in the National Honor Society. Best of luck Devin!

Rory Hamilton 152lbs

Hamilton running the bar!!!

Rory has been in the MV wrestling program for six years. Rory has quietly improved over the years to one if the BEST kept secrets on this team. He is always doing the right thing in the room (working hard). His killer cradle is a match ender.

Rory has also applied to the United State Military Academy at West Point. He has also applied to Boston University, Notre Dame, and Maryland.

Along with his wrestling, Rory is a standout baseball player. At the same time, he has been taking college classes and will graduate with more than 12 college credits. All the best in the future Rory!
