2022-2023 Army West Point Wrestling Preview – 157 & 165

With the 2022-2023 season about to kick off, let’s look at our next two weight classes – 157 and 165! The Army West Point wrestling season begins on Sunday November 6th in Christl Arena with The Black Knight Scramble where the Army will lock horns in dual meets against Oregon State, Queens University of Charlotte, and LIU. Oregon State is currently ranked #23 in the nation!

157 Pounds

Lukez
Nate Lukez

Nate Lukez is back, and the team captain opens the season in the national rankings at #29. The PA native will look to climb the ladder again some tough competition right out of the gate. Tanner Craig, another junior, is a viable option for Coach Ward here as well. Keep your eye on freshman Trae McDaniel- who could very well win the spot. He was 17-5 at Prep last year. Caden Blust, Kenny Kaiser and Ryan Alvarado could also compete here.

165 Pounds

Harkins
Dalton Harkins

Dalton Harkins had a strong freshman season and is back at this weight. He spent much of the year in the national rankings and posted 24 wins. Senior captain Christian Hunt will also look to break into the lineup after a season as a spot starter. Joe Metz and freshman Kent McCombs are also available.

2022-2023 Army West Point Wrestling Preview – 141 and 149

The Black Knights are two weeks away from opening up against #18 Oregon State. Here are some cadets to look for at 141 and 149!!!

141 Pounds

Sanchez
Julian Sanchez

This figures to be a wide-open weight for Army. Last year’s EIWA Rep Thomas Deck has moved up to 149. Junior Julian Sanchez may have the inside track, as he saw time in the lineup last year, posting a 12-7 record. Junior Mark Montgomery also was a regular in the lineup at 133 and should challenge for time here. Two freshmen from New Jersey may be at this weight after a prep year and could see reps in the lineup, or on an open schedule – look for Ed Hummel and Shane Percelay to contribute! Veterans like Dom Carone, Nic Botello, Tyler Morris and Logan Brown are also options here or at 149 for Coach Ward.

149 Pounds

Williams
Matt Williams

Junior captain Matt Williams is back after a 23-4 season last year, including key wins in the Lehigh and Navy dual meets. He is poised for a big year. He will be challenged by the aforementioned Deck, who moves up from 141 after a 19-7 campaign. Sophomore Zach Keal was 14-7 at this weight last season and will be in the mix as will sophomore Mark Metz and freshman Cole Stone.

2022-2023 Army West Point Wrestling – Preview 125 and 133

Army West Point logo

Folks, this year SectionIXwrestling.com is excited to bring you coverage of Army West Point Wrestling. We are fortunate to have a major DI program right in our backyard. AWP is Hudson Valley’s hometown team.

Wrestling fans will be able to see the Black Knights host #23 Oregon State, #2 Iowa and #1 Penn State all in the month of November.

We will start our coverage with some weight class previews that have been provided by the Army West Point coaching staff!

125 Pounds

Berginc
Ethan Berginc

Freshman Ethan Berginc is the projected starter. Berginc was a PA state champ and spent the last season at USMAPS. He placed at nearly every open tourney he entered.

Two freshmen from Illinois will fight for time at this weight, both of whom also attended the prep school last year. Nain Vasquez from powerhouse Montini Catholic, and an undersized Charlie Farmer both had successful prep years.

133

Treanor
Rich Treanor

Rich Treanor won an EIWA medal as a freshman and is back for his sophomore year. He also placed in the FILA Junior freestyle event in Las Vegas this past spring.

Treanor will be challenged by yet another stud lightweight moving down from the prep school, Ryan Franco. Franco hails from Clovis North, CA and has a wide-open attacking style.

This is a deep weight for the Knights, as we may see freshman Joe Couch from Bullis School Maryland, or a pair of sophomores- Jake Staud or Daniel Uhorchuk.

Check back soon for the details on 141/149

Super 32 Challenge – Minisink Valley’s PJ Duke Looking To Go Back-To-Back

The Mid-Hudson Tournament: History of the Longest Running High School Wrestling Tournament in NYS

The Mid-Hudson was started in 1965 as the Arlington Wrestling Invitational by Mr. Bill Wright, Arlington’s first wrestling coach. Four teams participated (Arlington, Onteora, Brewster, and Saugerties) and Onteora was team champion. It expanded to six teams in 1966, eight schools in 1967, and 13 teams in 1970.

Kerry McCoy won the Mid-Hudson in 1990 while wrestling for Longwood HS. McCoy would go on the be a 3X NCAA All-American, 2X NCAA Champion and a 2X Olympian!

In 1971 it expanded to 16 teams and was moved to Dutchess Community College. It remained at DCC until 1983 and was moved to Kingston High School (Kate Walton Field House). The tournament was expanded to 25 teams. Mr. Dean Short of Kingston was tournament director. In ’02 it moved back to Arlington and has been there ever since under the direction of Mr. Fred Perry. It is the longest running wrestling tournament in NYS. It has had NCAA and Olympic Champions, including Jeff Blatnick (Olympic Champion) and Kerry McCoy (2X NCAA Champion). There has been only one wrestler to win 5X Mid-Hudson titles! While wrestling for his alma mater, Monroe Woodbury head coach John Gartiser won the Mid-Hudson in 1997 (96 lbs.), 1998 (103 lbs.), 1999 (112 lbs.), 2000 (125 lbs.) and 2001 (140 lbs.). Only three wrestlers have won the Mid-Hudson four times! Valley Central’s Lou Ruggirello Sr. won the tournament in 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989. He would go on to win two NYS medals placing 3rd in 1988 and winning the title in 1989. Louie’s teammate at Valley Central, Jeff Lewis, won the Mid-Hudson in 1983, 1984, 1986, and 1987. Lewis would go on to become a 2X NYS place winner finishing 2nd and 3rd! Pine Bush graduate Johnny Stramiello won the Mid-Hudson in 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2013. Stramiello was a 2X NYS place winner taking 6th place honors 2011 and 2012.

Let’s take a look at the year-by-year individual and team champions. The vast majority of this information is from the Long Island Wrestling Association website. There are a few years that are not complete, and some years have many first names missing. If anyone can help fill in these blanks, please put the information in the comment section or email me at sectionixwrestling@gmail.com. I would also like to add any noteworthy comments next to the champions name so if you have any information that you would like to see added, send it to me! Enjoy!

Alfred State Wrestling Fall Prospect Clinic

This is an outstanding opportunity for any wrestler who would like to compete at the collegiate level. The Alfred State wrestling program has very strong ties to Section 9. The head coach, Justin Signorelli, is a Highland graduate and was a 3X Section 9 champion! On the 2022-2023 roster, Alfred State has five former Section 9 wrestlers including Jaden Hansen (Newburgh Free Academy), George Racz (Minisink Valley), Elijah Timbrouck (Kingston), Henry Villodas (Goshen), and Christian Castellanos (Warwick).

Alfred State has also just announced that they will be adding Women’s wrestling as a sport starting in the 2023-2024 season! This prospect clinic is open to men and women wrestlers!!!

Anyone interested in attending should contact Coach Signorelli at signorjm@alfredstate.edu.
