History of Section 9 Wrestling at NYSPHSAA Championships – By the Numbers

1990 NYS Champions with MOW Troy Bouzakis (Pine Bush, 126) and Mike Bucci (Red Hook , 215)

Now that the 2020 high school season is officially in the books, let’s take a “By the Numbers” look at the history of Section 9 – specifically how we have performed at the NYSPHSAA Championships. Just a few notes before we get started. Rockland County was part of Section 9 until 1984. Starting in the 1985, Rockland County became part of Section 1. From 1963 until 1973, the state tournament only recognized the top 4 finishers as place winners. In 2004, the NYSPHSAA split into its current two-division format. Division 1 is the large schools, Division 2 is the the small schools. Lastly, in 2007 the NYSPHSAA instituted the wildcard or at-large system which makes it possible for a section to have multiple entries in each weight class. Special thanks to my friends Tim Monahan and Tracy Sutera for helping me with this post. If I have omitted anyone, please email me at sectionixwrestling@gmail.com.

    1. There were about 10 people who were all on the same sheet of my notes that were omitted.. there are there now… my apologies…Mike

      1. The list is not complete I’m offend I am not there all the hard work I put in as a kid to look back as I was never there.

  1. Outstanding job Tracey and Tim compiling this list!. Reading a lot of the names brought back fond memories.

    1. No apologies necessary Mike! Thanks for doing all you do for the Section. It brought back a lot of good memories.

  2. Thanks for all the work that was put into this! So fun reading the history of Section 9 and glad we were able to be a part of the Section 9 family for the last few years of our wrestler’s high school career!

    1. Why gino brown from nfa is not no where to be found in this he is a 3 time section 9 champion and a 2 time state placer and yet is no where to be found in the history what an insult.

      1. Sorry that I missed you Gino. I run this site on a volunteer basis and I did hours and hours of research in putting this together however I did miss some people. I will fix it now.

    2. My is gino brown why am I not included in the section wrestling family I am a 3 time section 9 champion 2 time state placer and not one mention of me I’am offended.

    1. Mike, Tim, Tracy……Mike always a great job! Thank you Guys for all your hard work. Love reading about the great Wrestling traditions of Section 9. God bless!

  3. My is gino brown why am I not included in the section wrestling family I am a 3 time section 9 champion 2 time state placer and not one mention of me I’am offended.

  4. Great job on this list. Just curious about what place section 9 took in 1991 with 3 state champions?

    Thank you.

  5. I got thinking about the early days. Kenny Johnson was the NFA heavyweight, ca 1966. He went to West Point and played football. Should he be mentioned somewhere?

  6. I just read the review of the 1960s. It looks like Kenny Johnson never won Section 9 tournament. Hence he isn’t included in the above review.

  7. Tommy Askey Wins the SoCon conference title and will wrestle at the NCAA D1 Championships in Tulsa, OK.

  8. The ESPN crew of Jordan Burroughs, Jim Gibbons and Mike Couzens called the Spencer Lee-Mike Ramos semifinal match the greatest match in 40 years. In my opinion, I think they were referring to the 1982 NCAA finals match of Ed Banach vs Mark Schultz.

  9. I should have said Kenny Johnson never won the NYS tournament… he was an early Section 9 champion.

  10. Seems Anthony Monforte is missing from the 165 class in 1990 & 1991. From Rondout. As a matter of fact all of the Rondout teams members are missing.
