Section 9 Duals – Day 1 Recap

Division 1 – Newburgh Location
Day 1 of the Section 9 Duals is in the books, and it did not disappoint! Top seeded Minisink Valley advances to the semis by shutting out Warwick 72-0 in the quarters. Although the outcome of the dual was never in question, there were a couple of marquee matchups worth mentioning. At 102 pounds MV’s Joseph Uhrig topped Warwick’s Brady Judd 7-3 in a very competitive bout! The biggest surprise of the day, however, came at 118 pounds where Minisink’s Sofia Macaluso pinned former NYS place winner Alex Greco! Macaluso was down 3-2 late in the 3rd and went for broke! It paid off – the MV senior threw and pinned Greco with 6 seconds left on the clock! Warwick advanced to the quarterfinal round by defeating Valley Central by a score of 53-19.

The Warriors will take on #4 seed Newburgh Free Academy in the semifinal round. NFA made it to Day 2 by topping Goshen 46-18 in the Round of 16, and then beating Washingtonville 54-21 in the quarters. This dual featured a couple of very competitive matches but perhaps the match of biggest interest occurred at 145 where NFA’s Jackson Merli pinned Washingtonville’s Dominic Gennaro in a battle of two ranked wrestlers. Washingtonville advanced to the quarters by defeating Kingston in the Round of 16 by a score of 54-18.

Division 1 – Wallkill Location
Second seed Monroe Woodbury advances into the Day 2 semis by topping Cornwall by a score of 44-27 in the quarters. Cornwall made it to the quarters by beating Pine Bush in the Round of 16 36-24.

The Crusaders will have their hands full in the semis when they lock horns with 3rd seeded Middletown. The Middies had a convincing 57-12 Round of 16 win over Beacon before topping Wallkill by a score of 40-30 in the quarters. This was a closely contested dual that wasn’t clinched until the second to last bout when Middletown’s Pedro Godine’s topped Wallkill’s Matt Rizzo 9-5 at 138 pounds. Wallkill made it to the quarters by beating Saugerties 35-25 in the Round of 16.
