Gene Brigham Tournament champions Minisink Valley

Gene Brigham Memorial Tournament
Host Minisink Valley crowned six champions and placed fifteen wrestlers in the top 4 in winning the 2023 Gene Brigham Memorial Tournament. Winning titles for the Warriors were Luke Greiner (145), Quinten Morgan (160), Andrew Filip (172), Ethan Gallo (215), and Aiden Gove (285)…plus Jaida Macaluso won the 126-pound Girls Division bracket!. Minisink amassed 302 points followed by Bellport with 172, and Burnt Hills with 166. Shenendehowa and Unatego-Unadilla Valley tied for 4th place with 87 team points. Valley Central had two champions in EJ Vass, who won by medical forfeit at 102 over Port Jervis’s Charlie Wylie, and Luke Satriano at 110. Satriano defeated Division 2 hammer Caleb Cole by a score of 8-2 in the finals. Cole, a 4th placed finisher in the D2 state tournament last year, had only one loss on the season coming into today’s tournament and that loss was up at 118. Valley Central had a total of four top-4 place winners and took 6th in the team race. Pine Bush, who finished 7th in the team standings, had one champion in Braydon Pennell at 189. Pennell pinned his way to the title with three falls in 1:56! The Bushmen had three top-4 placers. Port Jervis finished 8th in the team race and had two top-4 finishers while Ellenville placed 9th and had one wrestler place in the top 4. Ethan Gallo was voted MOW and the Aggregate Pin Award was won by Andrew Filip who notched four pins in 6:36.

King and Queen Bison Invitational
Newburgh Free Academy finished 2nd in the team race at the King and Queen Bison Invitational in Shaker. The Goldbacks had two individual champions – William Soto at 102 and Joe Ponesse at 172. Kevin Segali placed 2nd at 145, Chris Leggett took 3rd at 189, and Matthew Mercado finished 5th at 126.

Mustang Duals
Goshen went 4-1 at the Mustang Duals in Mount Markham. Jacob Perales, Jackson Brady, and Kyle Kubik all went undefeated for the day.

    1. That’s a nice win by Cooper. Cooper has been tough to rank this year…the win over Martin was back in early December and he’s only wrestled 3 times since 12/10.

      1. Agreed! Been back and forth between 118 and 126lbs as well. Gonna be a great sectionals. Lots of amazing kids, Ty for all you do and the hard work and dedication!
