NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championships – Day 1 Recap

Division 1
The Section 9 Division 1 squad had a very good day! No major surprises on either side of the ledger – just a very solid, workmanlike performance. We had 8 wrestlers advance to tomorrow morning’s semifinal round and we have 15 other wrestlers who will wrestle in the blood round. In the blood round, if you win you are guaranteed a top-8 placement, if you lose you are eliminated. The semifinalists are already guaranteed a top-6 placement. There will be separate post following all of the Section 9 wrestlers during tomorrow’s sessions. Let’s take a look at the Division 1 wrestlers who have made it to Day 2!

Team Race and Sectional Race
Section 9 has several teams that are in the hunt and will finish the tournament in the top-10. After Day 1, Plainedge is leading the Division 1 team race with 49 points followed by St. Francis with 47, Minisink Valley with 42, Middletown with 36, and Wantagh with 35.5 points and NFA rounds off the top 6 with 31 points.

Discussing the sectional team race is premature because only the highest placing wrestler from each section can earn points for the sectional race so we will revisit this tomorrow.

Division 2
Our Division 2 squad had a day with some highs and lows. Ryan Ross was the only D2 wrestler to advance to the quarterfinals and he was defeated in that round so there and no Section 9 Division 2 semifinalists. The boys did, however, dust themselves off and wrestled back extremely hard! After two rounds of consies, we now have 7 Division 2 wrestlers alive in the blood round! I believe this is the highest number of Section 9 D2 wrestlers to advance to Day 2 of the state tournament! Congratulations boys! Let’s take a look at the wrestlers who are still alive!

Blood Round
108 – Bryce Reilly (Our Lady of Lourdes)
145 – Justin Coiteux (New Paltz)
160 – Ryan Ross (Port Jervis)
170 – Michael Franco (Chester)
190 – Maddox McCormick (Port Jervis)
215 – Matt Oosterom (Port Jervis)
285 – Mark Paschal (Red Hook)
