Gene Brigham Memorial Tournament @ Minisink Valley
Host Minisink Valley had nine finalists and crowned five individual champions to cruise to the team title at the 2022 Gene Brigham. Winning titles for the Warriors were Eric Tigue (152), Zack Ryder (160), Mikey Altomer (172), Andrew Filip (189), and Ethan Gallo (215). The other finalists for Minisink were Wyatt Boice (110), Sofia Macaluso (118), Luke Greiner (145), and George Racz (160). Eight other Warriors finished in the top six at their weight class: Joseph Uhrig (5th @ 102), Anthony Tresch (3rd @ 126), Zackary McKernan (4th @ 132), Liam Holmes (5th @ 138), Tyler Dumond (6th @ 138), Quinten Morgan (3rd @ 172), Michael Loundsbury (5th @ 189), and Aiden Gove (4th @ 285). Minisink Valley won the team title with 305 points outdistancing runner-up Shenendehowa who notched 207 points followed by 3rd place Burnt Hills who recorded 181.5 team points. MV’s Zack Ryder won the MOW and the Aggregate Pin award!

There were several other Section 9 teams and wrestlers who had notable results at the tournament. Valley Central finished 5th in the team race and had two champions in Luke Satriano (102) and Nicholas Weeden (110). Satriano was taken down early in his finals match and then reeled of 10 straight points to secure a major decision over Yorktown’s Joeseph Tornambe. Weeden avenged a dual meet loss to Wyatt Boice by securing a pin over his Minisink Valley rival at 5:46 in the finals. Other Valley Central placers were Vincent Vidacovich (5th @ 110), Sebastian Vidacovich (4th @ 126), and Richie Degon (5th @ 132). Goshen finished 6th in the team race and had two finalists in Max Winkler and Dom Siracusa. Winkler lost a hard-fought 8-2 decision to MV’s Andrew Filip, while Siracusa was pinned by the top ranked heavyweight in the state, Charles Tibbitts from New Hartford, at the 2:27 mark of the second period. Other Goshen place winners were Jacob Perales (4th @ 118), Declan Bernhardt (6th @ 215), and Aiden DeEntremont (3rd @ 285).

The remaining Section 9 place winners at the tournament were Charle Wylie from Port Jervis (4th @ 102), Pine Bush’s Logan Pennell (5th @ 118), Pine Bush’s Richie Urena (6th @ 126), Ryan Ross from Port Jervis (5th @ 145), Burke’s Frankie Shaw (5th @ 152), Pine Bush’s Devis Greer (3rd @ 160), Jack Mazzie from Burke (6th @ 172), Ivan Figueroa from Port Jervis (6th @ 189), Matt Oosterom from Port Jervis (3rd @ 215), and Saul Abrego from Pine Bush (4th @ 215).

For the first time ever, this year’s Gene Brigham Memorial Tournament also had a Girls Only Division. There were several girls who competed against the boys – and two of them, Wylie and Macaluso, even placed in the top 6! However, hosting a tournament with a Girls Only Division is a huge step in getting Girls Wrestling sanctioned in New York State. Congratulations to Pine Bush’s Brooke Tarshis and to Bellport’s Cadence Howard for winning their weight classes at yesterday’s tournament! Great job girls!!!
