Section 4 champion Darren Florance is one of the favorites to take home the 102-pound title in Albany.
The Division 2 lightweights are going to provide fireworks at the MVP Arena in Albany! There are no fewer than four wrestlers with a legitimate shot at winning this weight class. Let’s start with Darren Florance from BGAH. The Section 4 champ placed 6th in NYS in 2020, is perfect at 24-0 this season, and has a few very impressive wins. He has a major decision over Section 4 D1 champ Ryan Ferrara and he also has wins over two of the best D2 wrestlers in the state, Gavin Mangano and Christopher Noto. Mangano, from Section 11 Shoreham Waging River, suffered a late season injury and is not wrestling in Albany however Noto is! Noto, an 8th grader from Honeoye Falls Lima, is sporting a 31-1 record for the season with his only loss coming via 5-3 decision to Florance. Gene Edwards from Section 3 is 39-2 this year with both losses coming at 110 to very good wrestlers. Edwards also has a win over 110-pound Section 2 D2 champ Liam English, whose twin brother Gabe is a contender here at 102. Gabe is having a great year and has only one loss on the season – a 4-3 decision to his brother Liam! Section 11 champion Tommy Aiello’s only two losses this year are to the aforementioned Mangano and he will also be in the medal hunt. Section 6 champ Carmine Calimere has only one loss and he avenged that loss in the S6 finals. He also has wins over both S6 D2 state qualifiers! We would be remiss if we didn’t mention that Section 9 has their first ever female NYS qualifier. Port Jervis 8th grader Charlie Wylie won the Section 9 title at 102 and is having a great year. Her season record is 30-6 and she should not be overlooked! A few others to keep an eye on here are Section 5 runner-up Jacob McVige and Section 8 champion William Grassini.
Port Jervis senior Trevor Tufano is making another trip to the state tournament in Albany and has a good chance of ending his high school career as a NYS place winner!
Could we see Tioga’s Jayden Duncanson capture a NYS title as an 8th grader?
The Division 2 110-pound weight class is wide open! Section 9 champion Trevor Tufano is one of the favorites at this weight. The Port Jervis senior is making his 3rd trip to the state tournament and is 25-1 this season. One of his losses however is to another wrestler in the bracket, Jayden Duncanson from Tioga. The Section 4 eighth grader pinned Tufano in Syracuse at the state duals and went on a roll through the remainder of the year. Duncanson hasn’t lost a match since the first week of January. Section 3 champion Talan Hubbard is another contender here. The sophomore from Homer has lost only two matches and both losses were 2-point decisions to D1 wrestlers. Section 11 champion Frank D’Elio has a very similar resume – he is 31-2 and both of his wrestlers to D1 opponents. Section 2 champion Liam English will also be in the hunt at 110 in Division 2. English has only two losses all season and one of them was to his twin brother and 102-pound Section 2 champ, Gabe! Andrew Spaulding also has a shot at a title here at 110 D2. Spaulding, the Section 5 champion from Honeoye Falls Lima, has a 28-3 record this year with one of the losses coming to Hubbard. The Section 4 runner-up Caleb Cole has only lost twice all year and both times it was to S4 champ Duncanson so he’s definitely in the medal hunt. A few other wrestlers in this bracket we need to watch closely are Section 1 champ Josh Laaz, Section 11 runner-up Michael Sangiardi, and Section 5 runner-up Ryan Farley.

Tioga sophomore Gianni Silvestri is looking to capture his 2nd NYS championship!
118 Division 2 is one of the most loaded weight classes in the tournament for either division. This weight class has four returning state place winners and a few other who are capable of taking the title. Let’s start with Gianni Silvestri from Section 4. The Tioga sophomore was the 2020 state champion at 99 and is 34-1 this year. His only loss of the year was a 3-1 sudden victory loss to a D1 state qualifier during the first week of the season. Silvestri also has a victory this year over the same wrestler he defeated in the state finals back in 2020, Xavier Dejesus-Remchuck from Section 5. DeJesus-Remchuck, a senior from Canisteo Greenwood, is having an outstanding season and has posted a few wins over the Section 5 runner-up Jazz Spaulding who is a medal contender here. Section 6 has two wrestlers in this bracket who are capable of taking home gold, Daniel Kirsch from Pioneer and Jordan Joslyn from Chautauqua Lake. Kirsch, who placed 6th in NYS in 2020, and Joslyn have faced each other twice this year. Joslyn won the first match by major decision and Kirsch defeated Joslyn 4-3 in the Section 6 finals. The losses to each other are the only two blemishes on each wrestlers resume this year. Section 2 champion Trevor Bishop is a perfect 35-0 this season and will contend here as will Section 3 champ Chase Nevills whose only loss this year came to Silvestri. In the Section 3 finals, Nevills defeated Carl Santariello from Marcellus Onondaga. Santiariello is our 4th returning state place winner here at 118 having placed 6th at 106 in 2020. A few others who will be in the medal hunt here are Dhilan Patel from Section 1, Lucas Ospina from Section 9, Joey Florance from Section 4, Ryan Devins from Section 7, Jack Godoy from Section 8, and Section 11 champ Anthony Mirando.
Highland senior Chris Gatto is 33-6 this season and is looking to get into the medal hunt up in Albany!
Section 11 champion Max Gallagher finished 3rd in NYS in 2019 and 2nd in 2020! Is this the year he makes it to the top of the podium?
There are plenty of talented wrestlers at 126 however the heavy favorite to take home the 2022 state title at this weight is Section 11 champ Max Gallagher from Bayport Plue Point. Gallagher finished 3rd in NYS at 99 in 2019, 2nd in NYS at 113 in 2020 and kicked it into high gear ever since that 3-2 loss in the 2020 finals. Gallagher has posted off season win over some of the top wrestlers in the nation and has occasionally appeared on the national rankings. Gallagher is 32-0 this season and has scored bonus points in nearly every match. One of the wrestlers looking to test Gallagher is Trey Kimball from Camden. The Section 3 champion is 26-1 this season and his only loss came up at 132 to a D1 wrestler. Mason Drew from Section 5 is also a contender here. Drew is sporting a 37-1 record and his only loss came way up at 138 to a state qualifier. Tioga’s Mason Welch will also make some noise here. Welch, who placed 8th in NYS in 2020, has 7 losses this year but all seven are to top notch opponents – he is battle tested and ready for the state tournament. A few other to watch at 126 D2 are Chris Gatto from Section 9, Jackson Wainwright from Section 1, Dylan Devine from Section 2, and Tyler Roe from Section 4. We should also mention that female wrestler Section 10 champ Zoe Griffith is now a 2X state qualifier!
Rondout Valley Rocco DeAveiro is 17-3 this season and is looking to make the most out of his first trip to the state tournament!
Section 5 champion Nicholas Noto is 30-1 and undefeated against Division 2 wrestlers this season!
This is going to be an incredible weight to watch at this year’s state tournament! There are five returning state place winners and a few other wrestlers who are right on par with them! Let’s start with Nicholas Noto from Section 5. Noto placed 6th as an 8th grader in 2019 but missed 2020 due to injury. Noto placed 3rd at the 2021 NYS Journeymen and he is having a great season sporting a 30-1 record with his only loss coming to 138 D1 hammer Casper Stewart. One of Noto’s wins this season was over Caden Bellis from Section 4 Tioga. Bellis placed 4th in NYS at 106 in 2020 and he is 37-1 this season with his only loss being a 5-3 decision to Noto back in December. Bellis has a win this season over another former state placer who is a contender here, Aiden Gillings from Section 6. Gillings, only a freshman, is also 37-1 and his only loss was the 4-3 decision to Bellis in Syracuse at the state duals. Gillings placed 4th in NYS at 99 back in 2020. Section 11 champ Joe Sparacio placed 4th in NYS in 2019 and is a perfect 30-0 this season and has the ability to win it all here as does PSAL champ Cameron Mayfield who placed 8th in the state in 2020. Section 1 champ Quinn Egan from Pleasantville has quietly put together a great season. He is 26-1 on the year with his only loss coming up at 138 to a D1 wrestler. Other to keep an eye on here at 132 D2 are Tanner McKenna from Section 2, Rocco DeAveiro from Section 9, Colton Havens from Section 5, Tavian Camper from Section 3, and Alex Clancy from Section 7.

Section 8 champion and Drexel commit Jordan Soriano is one of the favorites to win it all at 138 pounds!
The 138-pound weight class is going to be another great bracket to watch unfold! If we had to pick a favorite it would definitely be Section 8 champion Jordan Soriano from Clarke High School. Soriano placed 5th at 126 in 2020 and he’s having another monster year. Soriano is 35-1 this season and his only loss was up at 145 to an absolute hammer in Jackson Polo. Soriano will not go untested in Albany; there are several in this weight class that will push him. Section 2 champion Kieran Cullen is 40-1 on the season and has only lost to D1 NYS place winner Jordan Brown. Section 5 champ Caleb Sweet is another serious contender here. Sweet is 40-2 for the season and his only two losses were razor close decisions to other state qualifiers not in this bracket. Kace Cook from Section 3 Central Valley Academy is coming into the state tournament with a 35-2 record with his two losses coming at 145 and 152! Section 7 champion Sawyer Bell from Beekmantown should not be overlooked! Bell has a 34-1 record, and his only loss was a 6-3 decision to Cullen. Section 11 has two very solid entries at 138 D2. Craig Jablonski from Shoreham Wading River was a state place winner in 2020 however he lost in the Section 11 finals to Kyle Barber from Bayport Blue Point. A few other wrestlers that can shake up this bracket in Albany include Section 1 champion Christian Perlleshi, Section 6 champ Ryan Sweeney, and Section 9 champion Justin Coiteux.

Cold Spring Harbor senior Jackson Polo is the definite favorite at 145 D2 but this will not be a cakewalk! The Section 8 champion is a perfect 32-0 this season and he placed 3rd in NYS at 113 on 2020 and 5th in NYS at 99 in 2019. One of the wrestlers looking to upset Polo is Section 6 champion Luke Tomlinson. The Maple Grove senior is 41-1 this season and his only loss came at the hands of nationally ranked Cameron Catrabone. Our Section 2 champion, Owen Hicks, is another wrestler looking to hop on the top step of the podium on Saturday night. Hicks is 31-1 and his only loss was a 5-4 decision to D1 hammer Connor Gregory. Section 1 champ Sander Miller will also be in the mix. Miller has three losses on the season including a 1-point loss to Hicks. Section 3 champion Sixx Cook is 38-3 with all three losses coming to D1 state qualifiers – Oroudjov, Rossini, and Montalvo, while the Section 4 champion Donovan Smith is sporting a 34-3 record and he too will be in the medal hunt! The others in this weight who we should keep our eyes on include Section 9 champion Ryan Ross, Section 5 champion Ben Lloyd, Section 7 champion Alex Clancy, and Section 6 runner-up Adam Huntington.
New Paltz junior Cole Cuppett is 32-2 for the season and could definitely be in the hunt for a spot on the podium this weekend!
Section 5 champion Mitchell Gaiser (green) is one of several 152 pounders with a shot of taking the title in Albany!
This is an excellent weight class with a lot of balance. Section 10 champion Vandavian Way is definitely one of the favorites here. The Gouverneur sophomore is 31-1 but his one loss is to another wrestler in this bracket, Section 5’s Braidon Woodward. Woodward however was not the Section 5 champion, Mitchell Gaiser from Alexander took that title. Woodward and Gaiser wrestled 4X this year, Woodward won the first two, Gaiser won the final two. Section 6 champion Dakota Mascho placed 5th in NYS at 152 in 2020. He is undefeated at 32-0 this season and is clearly a contender here as is Section 4 sophomore Ousmane Duncanson who is 40-2 with losses to 152 and 160 pound D1 Sectional champions. Noah Bernstein from Section 1 Edgemont is tough and should not be overlooked and the same can be said for the Section 7 champion Hunter Devins who is 32-2 for the season. There are several others in this bracket who are having great season and could potentially place in the top 8. Keep an eye on Cole Cuppett from Section 9, Ryan Romano from Section 8, Anthony Evangelista from Section 11, and Kendryek Flynn from Section 2.

Gouverneur senior and Binghamton commit Carter Baer is a heavy favorite to win it all at 160 and become a 2X NYS champion.
Perhaps the biggest favorite of the entire tournament to win his weight class – D1 or D2 – is Carter Baer from Section 10 Gouverneur. Baer was the 138-pound state champ in 2020 and he is undefeated this year. The Binghamton bound Baer has pinned or teched every opponent in the first period this season with the exception of one – he pinned Section 4 D1 champion Ethan Hart in 2:22. There are some other very good wrestlers in this bracket, and it will be interesting to see if anyone can push Baer. Section 4 champ Emmitt Wood placed 7th in NYS at 152 and is battle tested. He will contend here as will Section 3 champ Evan Austerman who is 38-1. Section 4 runner-up Brady Buttice is super tough and should medal here and we can expect to see Section 8 champ Jack Forte make some noise. The Section champion here is Daniel Forbes. He has a 30-1 record this season and should also be in the mix. Others to watch here include Section 5 champion Ryleigh Durlee, Section 9 champ Logan Smith, Section 6 champion Nick Brown, and Section 2 champion Daniel Forbes.

This is a very open weight class but if we’re going to discuss some of the favorites, Section 3 champion Adam Ortega would be a place to start! The senior from Copenhagen High School is 36-1 with his only loss being a 2-0 decision to a wrestler from Pennsylvania. Section 2 has two wrestlers who will be in contention for gold here. Champion Reed Douglass and runner-up Ray Hutton are both having great seasons and will be in high medal contention here as will Section 5 champion Lucas Dendis who is 35-3 but has not lost to a D2 wrestler all season. It’s not common to see an 8th grader get into the medal hunt at the upper weights but Tavio Hoose from Section 6 is an exception. The middle schooler from Southwestern is 37-4 this season and is likely going to do very well in Albany. The Section 3 runner-up Jordan Koenig will be in the mix here as will PSAL champion Carlos Guzman. The other wrestlers we should watch here include Section 9 champion Wyatt Konjas, Section 8 champion Ryan Mastropaolo, Section 7 champion Landen Smith, Section 1 champion James Donnelly, and Section 5 runner-up Malachi Smith.

Section 4 champion Gabriel Monroe placed 4th in NYS at 182 in 2020 and is looking for a 2022 state title on Saturday in Albany!
This is another very good weight here in the small school division however Section 4 champion Gabriel Monroe has to be considered the favorite. Monroe finished 4th in this tournament at 182 in 2020 and is sporting a 34-1 record this season. His only loss was to nationally ranked Division 1 stud Kole Mulhauser. Monroe is the favorite, but he will not stroll through this bracket. Section 8 champion Justin Soriano is 31-1 this season and his one loss was a 5-3 decision to a wrestler from PA. Soriano is definitely capable of winning it all here. Another contender for the gold here is Section 6 champion Simon Lingle whose only loss on the season was up at 215 to a state qualifier. Section 3 champion Ethan Randall is also in the medal hunt here. Randall comes into the state tournament with a 33-1 record and avenged his only loss of the season when he defeated Section 3 runner-up Jared Belinski who is also in this bracket. The Section 5 champion John Layfield is 36-1 so we need to keep an eye on him as well as Section 1 champion Jalin Badillo, Section 4 runner-up Devin Beach, Section 9 champ Ivan Figueroa, and Section 4 qualifier Jarrett Thayer.

The 215-pound weight class is a solid bracket however all signs point to a Saturday evening showdown between a couple of returning state place winners. Section 3 champion Sam Sorenson placed 5th in NYS at 220 pounds back in 2020 and he is 41-0 this season. Sorenson also won the 2021 Journeymen NYS Tournament by defeating D1 hammer Ethan Gallo in the finals – Sorenson is legit! The wrestler most likely to challenge Sorenson for the title is Section 6 champion Dontae Hoose. The senior from Southwestern High School placed 6th at 195 pounds back in 2020 and his only loss this year was a 7-5 decision to a wrestler from Pennsylvania. Section 5 champion Trevor Sibble is an amazing 48-0 this season so he’s definitely a medal contender here as is the wrestler he handed his only loss to in the Section 5 finals, Connor Hare who is 40-1 this year. Section 2 champion Logan Marissal is 29-1 with a few good wins will be in the mix as will Section 9 champion Matt Oosterom who is 29-4. We should also keep our eyes on Section 4 champion Garrett Bidwell, Section 1 champ Jacob Cassidy, and Section 6 runner-up Trevor Barry.

With several potential champions in the bracket, the 285-pound heavyweights are going to be fun to watch. Let’s start with our Section 2 champion Tristen Hitchcock. He is 43-2 this season and his losses are to 215 D1 hammer Gallo and 285 D1 Section 3 champion Tibbetts – both matches were very close! Our Section 3 Division 2 champion is Nick Rogers from General Brown, and he is going to be heard from this weekend. Brown has only two losses on the season – both to 215 S3 D2 hammer Sam Sorenson. Our PSAL champion here is Christian Solano and he sports a perfect 35-0 record coming into the tournament and we should also watch out for sophomore Section 7 champion Connor Bushey whose only loss on the season was to Hitchcock. The Section 4 champ Kam Hills and the Section 5 champ Noah Wazinski both have some nice wins and will make some noise as could Section 9 champion Logan Ormond who is 20-2 on the season. Others to watch here are Section 3 Josh Salsman and Andrew Morris, Section 6 champion Charles Larose, and Section 5 runner-up Mason Peterson.

What To Watch For…. The 102-pound weight class is going to provide us with fireworks at the state tournament – the lightweights always do!!! There is also a lot of “unknowns” with the lightweights because many of the entries are first-year varsity wrestlers. This year’s field at 102 is loaded with talent and our Section 9 champion Luke Satriano will be one of the wrestlers in the mix for the title. The Valley Central freshman is a perfect 25-0 and has wins over three wrestlers in the field, Joeseph Tornambe, George Johnson, and fellow Section 9 qualifier Cooper Merli from NFA. Section 8 champion Dunia Sibomana will be another contender here. The Long Beach 8th grader is having a great year and has wins over a few wrestlers in the field. Sibomana has majored Carlos Arango twice, he’s beaten Connor Sheridan twice, and has a pin over Shane Dobbins. Section 11 champ Mason Mangialino from Hauppauge is undefeated and is definitely a contender as is Brentwood’s Jason Euceda whose only loss came in the quarters of the Section 11 tournament. He avenged that loss by pinning the wrestler who defeated him in the first period of their 3rd/4th match. Another wrestler who definitely needs to be watched at 102 is PSAL champ Evin Gursoy from Midwood. Gursoy is undefeated and he has pinned every opponent who he has faced, however he has only competed against other PSAL opponents this year thus far. Ralph Keeney from Section 2 has only one loss this season and that was up at 110 so he’s likely going to be in the hunt as will Ryan Ferrara from Section 4 whose only on-mat losses this year have been to Division 2 hammers Florance and Noto.

What To Watch For… The 110-pound weight class will be great to watch and will likely end up being a showdown between a handful of Long Island wrestlers plus one hammer from the opposite end of the state! Joe Manfredi from Herricks is one of the definite favorites here. The Section 8 sophomore was a state finalist in 2020 and he is undefeated this season. Manfredi has wins over a few wrestlers in the field including an early season 4-2 decision over one of the other favorites here, Mikey Manta from Section 11. Manta, a Hauppauge senior who suffered his only loss this season to Manfredi, had all he could handle in the Section 11 finals against Jason Kwaak who he defeated 5-4. Kwaak is having a great year and will definitely contend here. On the opposite end of the state, Travis Browning from Section 6 has also put together an incredible year. The Hamburg senior is 26-1 this season and his only loss was to a 118-pound state qualifier. Browning placed 7th in the state at 99 in 2020. Section 5 has two very solid entries here in Dom Attardi from Victor and Zach Gerby from Pittsford. Section 1 champ Dillon Arrick from Arlington has only one loss this year and that was to another wrestler in the field, Anthony Clem from Section 8. Section 9 champion Nick Weeden’s only losses this season have been to Arrick and to Minisink Valley’s Wyatt Boice, who he beat in 2 of 3 meetings this season. Uniondale’s Angel Banegas, Mohonasen’s Clayton O’Connor, Indian River’s Tomah Gummow, and Copiague’s Sean Campbell will also contend for medals here at 110.

Undefeated Section 8 Champion Joseph Clemis one of the favorites to win a state title at 118!
What To Watch For… There will be no shortage of talent at 118 in Albany however undefeated Section 8 champion Joseph Clem has to be considered the favorite. The Wantagh sophomore is a perfect 39-0 this year including three close wins over fellow Section 8 state qualifier Ray Adams. Adams, a junior from Calhoun, has only one other loss than his three to Clem and will definitely contend here. CHSAA champion Mike Adams placed 5th in NYS in 2020 and is having a great season as is Section 9 champion Alex Greco who placed 8th in NYS in 2020. All three Section 11 qualifiers here at 118 are legit medal contenders. Matt Marlow from Northport is the Section 11 champion. He is 29-1 and has two wins over Section 11 runner-up Christian Lievano from Ward Melville who placed 4th in the state in 2020. Sachem East senior John Tietjen’s only loss this season this season was in the Section 11 tournament to Lievano. We have another former state placer at 118 in Michael Adams from Monsignor Farrell. The CHSAA champ placed 5th at 99 in 2020. Let’s also keep an eye on PSAL champ Jacob Levin from Tottenville, Section 2 champ Michael Santore from Shaker, and Section 6 champ Jaden Crumpler from Niagara Falls as medal contenders here at 118 pounds.

The 126-pound weight class is always a meat grinder, and this season will be no different. Where to begin? Let’s start with our two 2020 NYS top-3 finishers. Section 4 champion Tyler Ferrara finished 2nd in NYS D1 at 106 in 2020. The Chenango Forks junior is a perfect 30-0 this season with 28 of those wins coming with bonus points. The other 2020 top-3 finisher here is Brayden Fahrbach from Section 11 Mt. Sinai. Fahrbach, who placed 3rd at 99 in the D2, has only one loss this season and that was to Division 2 hammer Max Gallagher. Fahrbach earned his Section 11 title this year by knocking off another former state place winner when he defeated Vincent Ziccardi by sudden victory pinfall. Ziccardi placed 8th at 99 D1 in 2020 and will definitely be in the mix for the title this year. The PSAL has a legit title contender at 126 this year in Isaias Torres. The Grand Street Campus senior is 38-0 and has major decision wins this season over state qualifiers Michael Adams and Jacob Levin. The Section 1 champion Justin Fortugno is another contender here. The Briarcliff-Byram Hills-Valhalla-Westlake senior is 40-1 this season and his only loss came at 132 to Andrew Marchese. Fortugno notched a win this season over Section 3 champ Brody Fielding who is 41-2 this year and has a good chance of placing here. This weight class is very deep with talent. A few others to keep our eyes on are Section 6 Amarfio Reynolds, the Section 5 duo of Cal Russo and Joe Berenson, Section 2 champ Ayden Robles, and Section 9 freshman champ Anthony Tresch!

As the only returning NYS place winner, Section 9 champion Andrew Marchese has to be considered one of the favorites to take home the state title at 132 this year. The Washingtonville senior placed 5th in NYS at 113 in 2020 and is a perfect 44-0 this season. Although the favorite, Marchese will definitely be challenged by several talented wrestlers in this bracket. Section 3 champion Alex Booth is no stranger to the state tournament, and he is 38-1 this season with his only loss coming to D2 stud Nicholas Noto. Section 11 has a few wrestlers here who can contend for the top of the podium. Nick LaMorte from Rocky Point was victorious in the Section 11 finals over Eastport South Manor’s Steven Lukas by a 5-1 margin. Both wrestlers only have one loss each on the season and can definitely push Marchese. Section 8 champ Kyle Moore has only one loss this season and that was at 138 to Killian Foy who won Section 8 at that weight and is a former state finalist. There is definitely some depth at 132 and we should keep our eye on Section 5 champ Jake Daly, Section 6 champ Griffin LaPlante, Section 2 champ Gabe Goss, Section 8 runner-up Thomas Wagner, and Section 1 champion Justin Gierum. Section 9 runner-up Zak McKernan is scrappy and can surprise a few people up in Albany.

Section 5 sophomore Casper Stewart placed 3rd in NYS at 113 in 2020 and is 43-0 this season! Could he challenge nationally ranked PJ Duke?
Under normal circumstances, a weight class with Oroudjov, Foy, Stewart, Weinhaus, Holmes, Rossini, Brown, and Deutsch would be considered a loaded, wide-open weight class with several contenders for the title. However, when you add PJ Duke into the equation, things change. Duke, only a freshman at Minisink Valley, is currently ranked #4 in the nation by FloWrestling at 138 is considered a heavy favorite to take home NYS title #2! Duke won the state crown at 99 pounds in 2020 as a 7th grader and his accolades have exploded ever since. This past season PJ won the Super 32 Challenge and in December he made it to the finals of the Ironman before getting injured and settling for 2nd place. Since returning to action Duke is undefeated and notched a pin and a major decision victory over fellow Section 9 entry Jordan Brown. Brown, a junior at Monroe Woodbury, placed 6th in NYS at 99 pounds in 2020 could place very high at 138 this season as could Section 4 George Oroudjov who placed 2nd in NYS at 126 in 2020. Section 2 champion Jashon Holmes from Shenendehowa is having an incredible season and is sporting a perfect 34-0 record! Holmes has a few wins over the other Section 2 entry at 138, Tyler Rossini from Burnt Hills. Another undefeated wrestler in this bracket is Jared Weinhaus from Section 11. The Sachem East senior is 34-0 and has a win over the Section 8 champion Killian Foy who himself is a former state finalist. Not done yet…Casper Stewart from Attica Batavia is a perfect 43-0 this season! The Section 5 champ is no stranger to Albany either; Stewart placed 3rd at 113 in 2020. Just for good measure let’s mention that Section 1 champ Owen Deutsch is also undefeated this year. He is 27-0 and has scored bonus points in every match except one this year! This weight class is loaded!
Section 9 state reps Luke Greiner (right) and Jackson Merli split two matches this season. Merli won the first bout and Greiner defeated Merli in the S9 finals. Both matches were settled in sudden victory!

Will we see Cameron Catrabone, nationally ranked at 132, win a 2022 NYS title at 145?
The 145-pound weight class is another absolutely loaded bracket several returning state place winners and one nationally ranked hammer. Let’s begin with Section 6 champion Cameron Catrabone. The Williamsville North sophomore is currently ranked 4th in the nation by Flo….but that’s at 132 pounds. Catrabone wrestled at 132 at both the Super 32 and Powerade tournaments and he finished 3rd at both events. Catrabone also finished 6th in NYS in 2020 at 120. Will he have the same success at 145? Catrabone’s biggest challenge might come from Section 5 champion Jayden Scott. The Rush Henrietta senior is a 2X NYS finalist and hoped to cap off a stellar high school career with a state title. Scott is a perfect 19-0 this season. One of the other top contenders at 145 is Mahopac senior Angelo Centrone. The Section 1 champ is 35-1 this season with his only loss coming to 152-pound Section champ Tim Bova. It’s no surprise that Long Island also has a few hammers entered here! Section 8 champion Anthony Conetta is a former NYS place winner and is having a great year. His only two losses this year came at The Beast of the East. Section 11 champion Justin Klein is 42-1 and his only loss is to Centrone. He will definitely contend for a medal here as will the other two Section 11 entries, Christian Paredes from Connetquot and Frankie Volpe from Rocky Point. All three of these Suffolk County wrestlers are evenly matched. In the Section 11 tournament, Klein beat Paredes 5-3 in the finals while Paredes only beat Volpe 2-1 UTB in the semis. Sections 2 and 9 cannot be overlooked here either. Section 2 champ Josh Warland from Burnt Hills and runner-up Renso Montalvo from Amsterdam and legitimate medal contenders and do not be shocked if Section 9 champ Luke Greiner and runner-up Jackson Merli make a run at the podium. There is plenty of depth here – we should keep an eye on Section 4 champ Daniel Parker, Section 6 runner-up Gage LaPlante, Section 5 runner-up Nolan Liess, and Section 10 champion Colden Hardy.
Minisink Valley’s Eric Tigue (l) and Cornwall’s Tyler Reed will represent Section 9 at the NYSPHSAA Championships in Albany.
Section 1 champion Tim Bova from Arlington will be in the hunt for the top step on the podium at 152 in Albany.
The 152-pound weight class has a few absolute hammers who will battle it out for the 2022 state title. Section 5 champion Rocco Camillaci finished 3rd in NYS at 126 in 2020, and the undefeated Hilton senior is one of the top contenders here. Camillaci has a few great wins this year including a 4-3 win over the Section 5 160-pound champ Nick Sanko. One of the biggest challenges for Camillaci will likely come from Section 1 champion Tim Bova. The Arlington senior has an incredible 49-0 record this season and has a few wins over other wrestlers in the bracket. One of his toughest matches came from within his own Section. Fox Lane’s Jake Hoffmann dropped two close matches to Bova this season and will definitely contend here. Bova also has a win over Section 8 champ Benny Rogers. Rogers, a Wantagh senior, is battle tested this season and has some wins over tough wrestlers including Minisink Valley’s Eric Tigue. Section 9 champ Tigue and Rogers had a great match at the state duals where Tigue led most of the match, but Rogers scored late and prevailed 7-5. Tigue is having a great season but one of his other losses this year was to Section 2 champ Connor Gregory. The Ballston Spa senior’s only loss this year was to D2 wrestler Hunter Devins. Section 5 runner-up Isaiah Rodriguez from Brockport finished 8th at this exact weight in 2020 and will definitely be in the medal hunt – possibly high on the medal stand! A few others to watch at this wight are Carson Alberti from Section 6, Matt Hole-Lopez from Section 11, Gabe Lynch from Section 3, Tyler Reed from Section 9, and Alex Giuliani from Section 8.

Pittsford senior was defeated by heavy favorite Zack Ryder earlier this season. If they meet again in Albany can Sanko turn around the outcome?
This is not meant to discredit the rest of the field at 160, but this weight class looks like it’s a two-horse race…and one of the horses is Secretariat! Minisink Valley sophomore is the heavy favorite to capture his 2nd NYSPHSAA championship! Ryder was a state finalist as a 7th grader, state champion as an 8th grader, and won the Journeymen NYS title as a freshman. He has also won a cadet freestyle title in Fargo and placed 3rd at this year’s Ironman. Ryder is currently ranked 11th in the nation by FloWrestling. His toughest NYS competition this season came from one of the other wrestlers in this bracket, Section 5 champ Nick Sanko. Ryder defeated Sanko 8-1 at the state dual meet championships in Syracuse. Sanko, a senior from Pittsford, placed 4th in NYS at 152 in 2020 and is sporting a 26-2 record this season. One of the other top contenders here at 160 will be Section 5 runner-up Brady Unger from Fairport. Unger and Sanko engaged in a shootout earlier this season won by Sanko by the score of 19-12. The rest of this field is pretty open and will be fun to follow. Let’s keep our eyes on Jack Clough from Watertown, Josh Gendlin from Hewlett, Anthony Manzi from NFA, and Tom Andria from Islip.

Minisink Valley senior Mikey Altomer is the only returning state place winner in this bracket and must be considered one of the favorites to win a state title this year. Altomer placed 5th in 2020 and he’s having a great season! Altomer’s only two losses this year came back in December at the Ironman. Altomer will be challenged by several talented wrestlers including Section 6 champ Brian Bielec. The Grand Island senior is a perfect 42-0 this season with nearly every one of his wins earning bonus points. His closest match of the year was a 2-1 win over Section 5 champion Jake Scherbyn in the finals of the Lockport Tournament. Scherbyn, a senior from Spencerport, is also in this bracket and will definitely be a contender. Scherbyn is 24-2 this season with his other loss coming to Hilton’s Elijah Diakomihalis during the regular season. Scherbyn would defeat Diakomihalis in the Section 5 finals however both wrestlers have qualified for the state tournament. Diakomihalis, only a freshman, suffered his only loss on the season in the Section 5 finals and will definitely be one of the contenders for a state crown. If successful, it would be the 10th state title in the Diakomihalis family – Yianni won four and Greg won five! Let’s not forget about Section 11 champ Mack Murtha! Murtha, a senior from Sayville, is a perfect 35-0 this year and will definitely be in the hunt as will undefeated Section 2 champ Dylan Schell! A few others who could find their way on the medal stand include Section 9’s Mike Zrelak, Section 8’s Travis Shaver, Section 6’s Evan Stencel, and Section 2’s Ryan Buthfer.
Both Section 9 qualifiers, Minisink Valley’s Andrew Filip (top) and Pine Bush’s Brayden Pennell, have legitimate chances at standing on the podium in Albany on Saturday night!

The 189-pound weight class has no shortage of talent; however, one wrestler stands out above the rest. Section 3 champion Kole Mulhauser, who finished 3rd in NYS in 2020, is undefeated this season – very undefeated! Every single one of his matches has ended in either a first period pin or a technical fall! Mulhauser, currently ranked 8th in the nation by FloWrestling has committed to wrestle for Princeton next year. So who are the wrestlers with the best chance of pulling off the upset and knocking off Mulhauser? Let’s start with the duo from Section 5. Joe Marcello from Spencerport is your Section 5 champion. He is undefeated on the season however his two closest wins came to the Section 5 runner-up, Nick Smith from Pittsford. Both Marcello and Smith are in contention for a place high on the podium. Smith was pushed to the limit (6-4 sv) at the state duals in Syracuse by Section 9 champion Andrew Filip who is also in this bracket. The loss to Smith was the Minisink Valley junior’s only loss of the season. Filip had a very nice 7-5 win over Section 2 champ Dillon Blanchard who will also be in the medal hunt. Section 9 runner-up Brayden Pennell only lost 3-2 to Filip so he’s in contention as is Section 11 champ Jabali Zoia from Longwood who is undefeated this year! Zoia isn’t the only undefeated wrestler on Long Island at 189 in this bracket! Section 8 champ Kwasi Bonsu has yet to taste defeat this year and will definitely be in the mix. A few others to keep our eyes on are John McGowan from Section 1, Eric Carlson from Section 8, Jake Trovato from Section 11, and Joe Masica from PSAL.

With the level of talent in the bracket this year, 215 is going to be a great weight class to follow in Albany. Section 9 champion Ethan Gallo is undefeated and a former state place winner so we will start with him. The Minisink Valley junior placed 6th in the state as a freshman at 182 in 2020. This season he has dominated the competition and has convincing wins over several wins in the field! One of the wrestlers Gallo hasn’t faced is Section 1 champion Steven Burrell. Also undefeated, Burrell, a senior at New Rochelle, is sporting a perfect 22-0 record for the season. CHSAA champion Andrew Bardak is a wrestler who will also contend here. Bardak is battle tested having faced nationally ranked Wyoming Seminary wrestler Jack Darrah twice this season. Bardak lost both bouts however he has notched a few impressive wins over wrestlers in this bracket including Section 11 champ Robert Smith and Section 11 runner-up Jaiden Green. Smith, a senior from Huntington, is 40-1 this season with his only loss coming to Bardak. Green has also had a great year only suffering losses to Bardak, Smith, and Gallo. Section 2 has two solid entries at 215 in Ryan Stein from Shaker and Darrien Insogna from Ballston Spa. Section 5 champion John Santowski from Pittsford is also going to be in the hunt. Both Stein and Santowski each have only one loss on the season – both wrestlers were pinned by Gallo. A few others to watch here include Section 6 champ Kevin Daskavitz, Section 9 runner-up Bryson Tibbs, and Section 8 champ Keno Zachary.

The heavyweights are going to bring the house down in Albany! This weight class is loaded with at least six or seven wrestlers with a legit shot at winning it all! Let’s start with Charles Tibbitts from Section 3. Tibbitts, a senior from New Hartford, is a perfect 31-0 this season and he is laser focused on a state title. Middletown sophomore Stephan Monchery has absolutely dominated his opponents this season and is definitely one of the favorites. Monchery is 40-0 has pinned everyone – 37 have been pinned in the first period! Marc Berisha from Fox Lane in Section 1 is also undefeated. He is 36-0 and has pinned 34 of his opponents. Section 11 champion Sebastian Regis from East Islip is another undefeated wrestler in this bracket, and he will definitely be in the mix as will Section 11 runner-up John Feramola who has only lost to Regis and Monchery. Section 4 champion Gannon Johnston has only one loss this season and it was to Tibbitts in sudden victory so he’s a certain contender as is Section 5 champion Nathan Zimmerman who is 29-1 on the season. Section 6 champ Konrad Krzyszton has only one loss and that was to Section 6 runner-up Stefaan Fearon, a loss he avenged in the Section 6 finals. A few others to keep an eye on here are Bobby Flotz from Section 5, Rahmiere Bradley from Section 9, Romeo Turcios from Section 8, and Section 2 champion Will Hotaling who has wrestled at 215 for most of the season!

2022 Section 9 Division 1 Tournament Champions Minisink Valley
The Section 9 Wrestling Division 1 Championship tournament is in the books, and we saw a lot of history made! First and foremost, congratulations to Minisink Valley for winning the team title in record setting fashion. The Warriors crowned a record-tying 8 champions (Warwick also had 8 in 2011) and they are sending a record 10 wrestlers to the NYS tournament in Albany in two weeks. The Warriors also set the record for most team points with 370! They broke the record that the 2020 Minisink team set when that team scored 369 points – but they did that with 15 weight classes versus the 13 weight classes that currently exist! The tournament also featured the first ever female finalist! By making it to the finals at 118 pounds, Minisink Valley senior Sofia Macaluso became the first ever female to make it to the finals of the Section 9 wrestling tournament! Congrats Sofia! Let’s take a look at some of the individual awards as well as a weight class by weight class look at the Division 1 tournament.

Valley Central freshman won the title at 102 by defeating fellow state qualifier Cooper Merli from NFA by a score of 6-2 in the finals. Satriano has shown that he’s not only the top 102 pounder in Section 9 but he is a legitimate contender for a state title in Albany this year. I would not be shocked if Merli makes his way to the podium in Albany too. Wallkill’s Marco Futia had a great tournament and finished 3rd. Futia was able to challenge Merli for a spot on the Section 9 team going to Albany, but he lost to Merli in his true second match. Warwick’s Brady Judd avenged two regular season losses to Minisink Valley’s Joseph Uhrig and defeated him by a score of 6-4 in the consolation semis. Judd finished 4th while the MV 7th grader took 5th by defeating FDR’s Luke Dakin in the 5th/6th medal match.

Valley Central junior Nicholas Weeden is your 110-pound champion for Section 9 Division 1. Weeden had a convincing 8-1 victory over Minisink Valley 7th grader Wyatt Boice in the finals. Both Weeden and Boice will represent Section 9 in Albany. These two wrestlers locked horns three times this year with Boice winning the first match and Weeden taking the last two. Weeden’s teammate Vinny Vidacovich had a great tournament and placed 3rd by notching a 12-4 major decision over 4th place finisher Liam Hayes from Monroe Woodbury in their medal match. Cornwall’s Kevin Aleci defeated Minisink Valley’s Joe Sullivan by a score of 3-1 in the consolation finals and placed 5th with Sullivan taking 6th on the podium.

2020 NYS place winner Alex Greco avenged a regular season loss to top seeded Sofia Macaluso by earning the title at 118 with his 3-0 victory over the Minisink Valley senior in the finals. Macaluso became the first ever girl to make it to the Section 9 finals! Macaluso was challenged by 3rd place finisher Rocco Futia to a true second match and it was Futia who was victorious so he will join Greco as the two 118-pound wrestlers who are going to represent Section 9 in Albany. Maxim Javorsky from Monroe Woodbury placed 4th and he was followed by two Pine Bush wrestlers – Logan Pennell who placed 5th and James Duddy who battled all the way from the #9 seed to take 6th place honors.

Minisink Valley freshman Anthony Tresch lived up to his #1 seed and became the 2022 Section 9 Division 1 champion at 126 pounds. In the finals, Tresch defeated Valley Central’s Sebastian Vidacovich by a score of 3-0. The Valley Central junior will join Tresch as the two wrestlers representing Section 9 at 126 in Division 1. Our 3rd place finisher was Monroe Woodbury senior Grant Barczak who majored 4th place finisher Viktor Banda by a score of 10-2 in their medal match. In the 5th/6th match Middletown junior Jayden Norris topped Monroe junior Marco Piazza by a score of 8-2.

2020 NYS 5th place finisher Andrew Marchese is making another trip to Albany and this time he has laser like focus on taking home a state title. Marchese won the Section 9 title at 132 with a workmanlike 6-0 win over Minisink Valley’s Zak McKernan. Both Marchese and McKernan will be making the trip to Albany in two weeks! Warwick freshman Griffin Petzold wrestled from the #6 seed all the way to a 3rd place finish on the podium by defeating Middletown sophomore Jacob Roger in their medal match. Monticello’s Isaac Hernandez took home the 5th place medal by defeating Warwick’s Michael Accardo by a score of 4-2 in the consolation finals.

Minisink Valley freshman PJ Duke showed why he is the 3rd ranked wrestler in the nation according to FloWrestling. Duke, a 2020 NYS champion as a 7th grader, defeated Monroe Woodbury junior Jordan Brown by a score of 17-6 in the finals. Brown placed 6th in the NYS tournament in 2020 and is considered a favorite to place very high at this year’s state tournament. Could we possibly see an all Section 9 final at 138 in Albany??? Brown had to earn his spot on the Section 9 team by defeating 3rd place finisher Liam Holmes from Minisink Valley in a true second challenge. The Minisink Valley sophomore finished 3rd by defeating Goshen’s Brady Jackson by a score of 5-2 in the consolation finals. Warwick sophomore Tyler Desotle placed third followed by Middletown’s Michael Tomblinson who earned 6th place honors.

Sophomore Luke Greiner from Minisink Valley won the title at 145 by defeating NFA’s Jackson Merli by a score of 5-3 in sudden victory in a match that deservedly won the award for Most Exciting Finals Match! These two wrestled back in January at the Section 9 Duals and it was Merli that won that match by a score of 8-6. That match was also determined in sudden victory. Greiner and Merli will both represent Section 9 in Albany! Wallkill junior George Thomas had a great tournament and placed 3rd at this weight by defeating 4th place finisher Dominic Gennaro from Washingtonville in the consolation finals. Monroe Woodbury sophomore Bandon Carcaterra placed 5th by topping Cornwall’s Theo Ballantine 7-5 in their medal match.

Minisink Valley senior Eric Tigue is now a 3X Section 9 champion! Tigue won titles in 2018 and 2019 while wrestling for Division 2 Port Jervis and has now added a 3rd title by winning a Division 1 title as a Minisink Valley Warrior! Tigue won the title by defeating top seeded Tyler Reed from Cornwall in the finals. Reed was recognized as the 2022 Most Improved Wrestler in Section 9 prior to the start of the finals. Reed had to earn his spot on the Section 9 team by defeating Saugerties junior Christian Hockx in a true second challenge. Hockx finished 3rd by beating Wallkill’s Marco Martini who took 4th. Washingtonville junior Ibrahim Aljamal placed 5th when he majored Middletown’s Jason Cintron by a score of 11-0 in the 5th place consolation finals.

Nationally ranked Minisink valley sophomore Zack Ryder left no doubt about who is the top dog at 160 in Section 9 by pinning his way through the entire tournament. Ryder recorded falls in 29 seconds, 20 seconds, 15 seconds before winning the title at 160 by pinning Anthony Manzi of NFA in 2:59. Ryder is looking to win another state title after winning gold in Albany at 126 in 2020. Manzi punched his ticket to the finals, and to Albany, by defeating Minisink’s George Racz in the semis. Racz wrestled back well and took 3rd place honors after pinning 4th place finisher Logan Serafin in the consolation finals. Monroe Woodbury senior Rob Liggio defeated Warwick senior Jake Mazzella to take 5th place at 160.

2020 NYS 5th place finisher Mikey Altomer from Minisink Valley has punched his ticket to Albany once again by being crowned the 172 pound champion for Section 9 Division 1! Altomer dominated his opponents all weekend and capped off his title run by beating Monroe Woodbury’s Mike Zrelak by a score of 10-1 in the finals. Zrelak finishes his outstanding high school career by earning his first trip to Albany by finishing 2nd. Kingston senior Myles Gordon entered the tournament as the #7 seed but wrestled great and finished in 3rd place by defeating 4th place finisher Nick Cavallo from Cornwall in their medal match. Middletown’s Jalen Charles placed 5th followed by Warwick sophomore Johnny Accardo who finished 6th.

In an exciting and intense finals match, Minisink Valley junior Andre Filip took home the crown at 189 by defeating Pine Bush junior Braydon Pennell by a score of 3-2! Filip is now a 4X Section 9 place winner. Pennell had to earn his right to wrestle in Albany for Section 9 by defeating 3rd place finisher Max Winkler in a true second challenge. Winkler had a great tournament and won 3rd place honors by avenging a regular season loss to 4th place finisher Joe Ponesse. Winkler defeated Ponesse by a score of 4-2 in their 3rd/4th place medal match. Nick York from Kingston placed 5th and he was followed by Warwick’s Joe Bacenet who took 6th at 189.

Minisink Valley junior Ethan Gallo pinned his way through the tournament to win the title at 215. Gallo, a three-sport athlete, placed 6th in NYS at 182 in 2020 and is one of the favorites to win it all in Albany this year. Gallo defeated Middletown sophomore Bryson Tibbs by pinfall in 51 seconds to earn the title. Tibbs, who wrestled most of the year at 189, bumped up to 215 for the tournament and made it to the finals so he, along with Gallo, will represent Section 9 at the state tournament in Albany in two weeks. Washingtonville senior Justin Callahan placed 3rd at 215 when he defeated Cornwall junior Gavin Furst in their 3rd/4th place medal match. Beacon senior Lou DelBianco placed 5th followed by Wallkill’s Chris Betcher who earned 6th place honors.
285 Pounds Top 6 On The Podium 1. Stephan Monchery – Middletown 2. Dominick Siracusa – Goshen 3. Rahmiere Bradley – Middletown 4. Aiden DeEntremont – Goshen 5. Nick Valenzano – Cornwall 6. Saul Abrego – Pine Bush
Middletown sophomore Stephan Monchery was absolutely dominant in pinning his way to the title at 285. Monchery notched pins in 1:35, :12, 3:30, before capping off his title run by pinning his finals opponent Dominick Siracusa is 2:12. Monchery is considered a one of the favorites to win a state title in Albany in a few weeks! Siracusa, a junior from Goshen, had a great season and a great Section 9 tournament making it all the way to the finals. However, Siracusa will not be representing Section 9 in Albany because he was defeated in a true second challenge by Monchery’s Middletown teammate – sophomore Rahmiere Bradley. Bradley came into the tournament as the #9 seed and wrestled all the way to 3rd place before defeating Siracusa 5-4 in the true second challenge and punching his ticket to the state tournament. Siracusa’s teammate Aiden DeEntremont placed 4th at 285, followed by Nick Valenzano from Cornwall and Saul Abrego from Pine Bush who took 5th and 6th place respectively.
