Middletown, Rondout Valley, Marlboro, & Pine Bush @ Pete Caruso Mahopac Tournament
Middletown had 10 wrestlers place in the top 4 including 4 finalists and 3 champions on their way to the team title at the Pete Caruso Tournament in Mahopac. Leading the way for the Middies were champions Justin Morales (106), Josh Sam (132),and Joe Velazquez (160). Other top 4 finishers for Middletown were Armel Duke who finished 2nd at 220, Destin Morano who was 3rd at 152, Pablo Garcia who took 3rd at 170, Elijah Babb who came in 3rd at 182, Stephan Monchery who was 3rd at 285, Jeremy Jenkins who was 4th at 138, and Bruce French who placed 4th at 285.

Pine Bush took 6th place in the team race and had 3 champions and one other finalist! Kevin Urena took home the title at 126 and notched a nice win over state qualifier CJ McMonegal from North Rockland. Tommy Askey was the champion at 145 and Nick Florin took the title at 152 pounds. Lucas Pennell finished 2nd at 160 for Pine Bush. Rondout Valley had 3 top 4 place winners in Nikko Walsh who was the champion at 113, Lucas Ospina who came in 4th at 106, and Timmy Pereira who took 4th at 120. Marlboro’s John Antonelli finished in 2nd place at 120 pounds!

Monticello & New Paltz @ Edgemont Tournament
New Paltz had two champions and had three others place in the top 4 on their way to a 3rd place finish at the Edgemont Tournament. Aiden Cuppet (132) and Ethan Palanca (138) both won titles for New Paltz! Logan Michael (152) and Devin Dixon (220) took 3rd for New Paltz and Levi Wyns (145) finished 4th. Monticello was also at the Edgemont Tournament and Douglas Doherty won the title at 152 pounds!

This Saturday we will see who are the best dual meet teams in NYS! For the 2nd year in a row the NYSPHSAA Dual Meet Championships will take place at the SRC Arena & Events Center in Syracuse. Let’s break down the tournament, pool by pool, and also talk about some potential highlight matches we could be treated to on Saturday.

Before we get into the tournament analysis, let’s clarify a few things because there has been a lot of “discussion” about the seeding and pools. First and foremost, rankings are not the same as seeding. Rankings are just the opinion of the person who posts them – they have absolutely nothing to do with how a tournament is seeded. Seeding is usually done by using measurable data. For this tournament, the seeding was done by a point-based system. Teams received points for having active wrestlers on their roster who placed in last year’s state qualifying tournament and state tournament. Points were also awarded for wrestlers who are having exceptional seasons this year. Please keep in mind that this is only the 2nd year of this tournament and the system for selecting wildcards and seeding will be improved each year – just as it was for the individual state tournament. That said, let’s just be happy that we finally have a sanctioned dual meet championship tournament, let’s enjoy the event, and may the best team win!  

Division 1

Mat 1 Pool – Massapequa, Minisink Valley, Sachem East
This has been without question the most “discussed” pool in the tournament. Some have even gone as far to say that 3 of the top 5 teams in the state are in this pool. Massapequa is loaded! They have both top-level talent and depth. The Section 8 champs have several wrestlers who could potentially place in the state tournament including Chase Liardi (2nd NYS last season), Anthony Connetta, Mike Blando, Garrett Gibbons, Angelo Petrakis, and Thomas Greenblatt. They have a very solid wrestler at every single weight plus they have depth that allows them to move wrestlers around to get favorable match-ups. They are the team to beat but they will not go untested! Minisink Valley has surprised many teams in NYS this season. The Warriors graduated six Section 9 champs so some believed it would be a “rebuilding”season. Instead of rebuilding, Minisink has decided to go 23-0 thus far and repeat as S9 Duals Meet champions. Might we see a rematch of MV 7th grader Zack Ryder and Massapequa’s state finalist Chase Liardi? Liardi defeated Ryder 2-1 at the Eastern States Classic a few weeks ago! Sachem East is the third team in this pool and both Massapequa and MV are making a huge mistake if they are looking past them. Any team that knocks off Rocky Point and Eastport South Manor and wins the Section 11 Dual meet tournament must be taken seriously! Their 99 pounder Jared Weinhaus is as good as any lightweight in the state and we may be treated to a rematch between him and Connetta from Massapequa. Connetta won the their first bout 3-1 at ESC.

Mat 2 Pool – Spencerport, Fulton, Olean
No disrespect to Section 6 champ Olean but this pool will likely be determined by the winner of the Spencerport vs. Fulton dual. Olean is a solid team but probably doesn’t have the depth to hang with the other teams in this pool. Section 5 wildcard Spencerport has a nice, solid lineup with a good wrestler at every weight and one absolute hammer in Mason Wersinger who is 33-0 at 138/145 this season. It will be interesting to see how they match-up against Section 3 champ Fulton who has a similar type of lineup. Fulton puts out a tough wrestler at every weight and has a few state-placing caliber wrestlers in Thomas Hughes (120) and Camrin Galvin (160).

Mat 3 Pool – Hilton, Horseheads, Shenendehowa
Section 5 champs Hilton are the favorites to come out of this pool and could do very well in this tournament but could possibly get pushed by teams that match up well against them . Hilton has a few absolute studs however they are a little inexperienced at some other weights! Gregor McNeil was an ESC finalist at 99 and Rocco Camillici placed 5th at 106! Greg Diakomihalis is a 3X NYS champ and currently ranked #1 in the nation at 113 by FloWrestling. Ryan Burgos placed 6th at ESC at 126 and Sammy DePrez was ESC champ at 195 and is currently ranked 16th in the nation by Flo! Hilton also has Collin Burns at 285 who placed 4th at ESC. Section 2 champs Shenendehowa have a solid lineup and may be able to test Hilton. Shen’s 106 pounder is Stevo Poulin who is a NYS champion and a 2X ESC champ. He is currently ranked 3rd in the nation at 106 by FloWrestling. If nothing else we could possibly see a rematch between Stevo and Camillaci. Stevo won their first match 6-1 at ESC. Section 4 Horseheads is a wildcard entry. They have a solid lineup with a few studs but they probably don’t have the “horse-power” (yes, terrible pun) to challenge in this pool.

Mat 4 Pool – Niagara Wheatfield, Chenango Forks, Fox Lane
This pool could be fun to watch because there is no clear cut favorite. Niagara Wheatfield gained entry via wildcard however they are the #2 seed in the entire tournament based on the points system. With two state place winners in Justin and Warren McDougald, they have a lineup with star-power and depth. Section 1 champs Fox Lane also has a very solid lineup with a few hammers namely Amos Rivera at 120 and Jake Hoffman at 99 and we can’t discount them. Section 4 champs Chenango Forks who may surprise people this weekend but will probably have a tough time advancing out of this pool.

Division 2

Mat 5 Pool – Tioga, Seaford, Eldred/Liberty/Sullivan West
Section 4 champions Tioga are the top seeded team in the Division 2 tournament and for good reason. They are undefeated in duals and have a well balanced lineup including a few hammers in Brady Worthing, John Worthing and Austin Lamb. Section 8 dual meet champions Seaford may not have the star power of Tioga but they do have a very solid lineup with a tough wrestler at every weight. Section 9’s entry to the dual meet championship was a bit of surprise in Eldred/Liberty/Sullivan West. E/L/SW picked off Highland in a very exciting finals match at the S9 Duals – the match ended in a tie score and was determined by criteria! This tournament will be a great experience for the team however they will probably have a very tough time advancing out of this pool.

Mat 6 Pool – Pleasantville, Mt. Sinai, Cold Spring Harbor
This should be a great pool to follow! All three squads have very balanced lineups with a handful of studs! Section 1 champs Pleasantville have hammers at 120 and 132! Len Balducci is a 2X state place winner while 132 pounder Victor Perlleshi made it to the finals of the Eastern States Classic! Mt. Sinai was the D2 champion last year at this tournament and has a solid team returning this year led by Mike O’Brein (132), Joe O’Brein (138), Matt Campo (152), and Mike Sabella (195). Section 8 earned a wildcard into the tournament in Cold Spring Harbor. This is another team with a solid lineup and a couple of absolute hammers namely Gavin Bell (170), Raymond Costa (152), and Jackson Polo (99). This pool will have great duals and great individual match-ups!

Mat 7 Pool – Peru, Central Valley Academy, Canisteo-Greenwood
Mat #7 is another pool that will provide us with some great action on Saturday! Section 7 Peru is a perennial D2 power led by 126 pounder Logan Dubuque and will definitely have a chance to advance out of the pool, however most people are probably considering Central Valley Academy the team to beat! The Section 3 champs boast a balanced lineup with more than enough star power including Marek Bush (state champ), Hunter Shaut (state champ), and Mason Bush (state placer). The final team in this pool is Canisteo Greenwood from Section 5. Like Peru and CVA, they have a solid lineup with a few studs sprinkled in namely former state finalist Bradley Cheek (126) and Braiden Woodward (99). The 126 pound weight class in this pool will be worth the price of admission – Logan Dubuque, Bradley Cheek, and Marek Bush!

Mat 8 Pool – Saranac, Warrensburg, Falconer
Yeah – starting to sound like a broken record! This is another awesome pool on the D2 side of the tournament! Saranac won the Section 7 championship by edging Peru 40-36. They have solid wrestlers at every weight and an absolute hammer at 170 in Jacob Nolan! Warrensburg won the Section 2 title in D2 and will be competitive in Syracuse. They have a well-balanced lineup and usually get bonus points from Dylan Winchell (113), Hunter McKenna (145), and Nolan McNeil (195). Falconer from Section 6 is technically the unseeded “drop-in” team in this pool but many may consider them the favorite to advance to the semifinal round! Like the other teams in this pool, Falconer is well balanced. If we had to select one hammer from their lineup it would definitely be Robbie Penhollow at 182 who is sporting a 35-1 record with his only loss coming to an out-of-state opponent! Could we see Saranac’s Nolan bump up and face Penhollow? Or possibly see Penhollow bump up to 195 and take on McNeil? This will be a great pool to follow!

99 Pounds
1. Colby Amell – Saugerties
2. Andrew Marchese – Washingtonville

5. Nicolo Ricciuto – Valley Central
No changes at 99 but definitely a few results to mention! Amell still sits at #1 and has been idle since Eastern States Classic. Marchese rolled through the Beacon Bulldog notching a 6-0 win over #5 Ricciuto in the semis and then teching Beacon’s Chris Crawford 15-0 in the finals. We also had #3 Merli record an impressive 10-2 major over #4 Toldeo which sealed the deal for the victorious Goldbacks in the NFA vs MW dual on 1/15! A few others we need to keep an eye on at 99 are Alex Greco from Warwick, Luke Greiner from Minisink Valley, Kevin Rourke from Cornwall, and Trevor Tufano from Port Jervis.

106 Pounds
1. Zack Ryder – Minisink Valley

Ryder and Morales hold the top two spots at 106 but there are changes after that as Jaden Hansen keeps climbing up the rankings and now sits at #3! The NFA sophomore recorded a 2-1 victory over our previous 3rd ranked Winters at the NFA vs MW dual and then won the Beacon Bulldog Tournament! Wallkill’s Davis stays at #4 and Winters drops to #5. A few others who will be in the mix at 106 are Tyler Reed from Cornwall, Peter Bender from Highland, and Robert Drost from Saugerties!

113 Pounds
1. Jacob Chenier – Kingston
2. Matt Morris – Red Hook
3. Joe Habert – Minisink Valley
4. Nikko Walsh – Rondout Valley
5. Santos Ocasio – Monroe Woodbury
The 113 pound weight class was turned upside down at the Gene Brigham Tournament on 1/19 at Minisink Valley. Previously top-ranked Nikko Walsh had a tough day and dropped two matches so Kingston’s Jacob Chenier is our new #1! Morris from Red Hook moves up to #2 after recording a few wins over Walsh – a 7-4 decision at a dual on 1/16 and a wbf at the Gene Brigham. Joe Habert from MV scored a wbf over Walsh at the Gene Brigham and slides up to #3 while Walsh comes in at #4. Ocasio from MW has been idle since the S9 Duals but remains at #5 for now. There are several others to watch at 113 including Elliot Crocco from New Paltz, Austin Maddox from Washingtonville, Jack Kohrs from MW, and Drew Greco from Warwick.

120 Pounds
1. Marco Vespa – Monroe Woodbury
2. Nick Picariello – Minisink Valley
3. Liam Bullock – Chester
4. John Antonelli – Marlboro
5. Joey Curreri – Eldred/Liberty/Sullivan West
No changes in the top 5 at 120 pounds! Top-ranked Vespa continues to dominate the competition and has his sights set on a state title but he definitely can’t look past #2 Picariello from MV who had a great Gene Brigham Tournament including a win over defending S2 champ DeConno from Burnt Hills. Bullock remains at #3 and Antonelli won the Beacon Bulldog and stays at #4 one spot in front of Curreri from E/L/SW. We also need to keep our eyes on Zappolo from Washingtonville and Ferro from Kingston – both are having very good years!

126 Pounds
1. Jordan Suarez – Minisink Valley
2. Eric Tigue – Port Jervis
3. Brandon DeLaRosa – Newburgh Free Academy
4. Kevin Urena – Pine Bush
5. Ryan Burgos – Monroe Woodbury
Top ranked Suarez from MV is 6-0 since our last rankings and remains atop the 126 chart followed by Tigue from PJ who has looked very tough since dropping down from 132. Brandon DeLaRosa had a great week and moves up a spot to #3. The NFA senior defeated Burgos via pin at the NFA/MW dual meet, then finished 2nd at the Beacon Bulldog and had a common opponent win over #4 Urena from PB. Burgos from MW is our #5 at 126 but let’s not overlook Richter from Kingston or Phillips from VC who are both having solid seasons!

132 Pounds
1. Tommy Maddox – Washingtonville
2. Matt Romano – Valley Central
3. Mat Malherio – Highland
4. Pat Ross – Onteora
5. Josh Sam – Middletown
The 132 pound weight class is going to be fun to follow at both the D1 and D2 sections! Washingtonville’s Tommy Maddox has wins over Romano and Malherio and is the clear #1. VC’s Romano pinned Malherio at the Beacon Bulldog to avenge his loss to him from the Mid-Hudson so he moves up to #2 and Malherio drops to #3. Pat Ross from Onteora can beat anyone on any given day and is our #4 followed by Middletown’s Josh Sam who rounds out our top 5 at 132. The D1 tournament at this weight could have some great depth too as wrestlers like Luke Fischer from NFA, Aiden Cuppett from New Paltz, and Jimmy Heinlein from Saugerties will all contend!

138 Pounds
1. Sean Savacool – Minisink Valley
2. Nick Ross – Onteora
3. Ethan Palanca – New Paltz
4. Robert Estevez – Monroe Woodbury
5. Logan Schmalfuhs – Warwick
No changes necessary for the top 4 at 138 as Savacool, Ross, Palanca, and Estevez have been rolling along! Savacool went undefeated at the Gene Brigham, Ross won the Wickham, Palanca has been idle other than a forfeit and Estevez’s only loss was at a dual against DePaul Catholic, NJ. We do have a new #5 in Logan Schmalfuhs from Warwick who has recent wins over Alex Burns from Cornwall and Makeil Scott from Kingston who are two wrestlers to watch at 138. Burns recorded a nice win over PJ’s Gavis Staerker who will definitely contend for the D2 title here!

145 Pounds
1. Joe McGinty – Monroe Woodbury
2. Tommy Askey – Pine Bush
3. Nicholas Albornoz – Minisink Valley
4. Nick Curreri – Eldred/Liberty/Sullivan West
5. Jacob Gonzalez – Minisink Valley
No changes at all at 145! McGinty lost by major decision to Cabanillas from DePaul Catholic, but considering his opponent was ranked in the top 10 in the nation by Flo, we’ll let it slide and keep McGinty at #1! Askey looked great at the Beacon Bulldog winning the weight via two pins and a major in the finals and remains at #2 while Albornoz was undefeated at the Gene Brigham and stays at #3. Curreri won his only match last week and stays at #4 and Gonzalez from MV has been idle since ESC and remains at #5 at 145. Chris Fini from Goshen dropped to 145 for ESC and could contend for a medal here or at 152.

152 Pounds
1. Nate Ross – Onteora

3. Dan Heffner – Cornwall

Only a minor change at 152 as we moved Heffner to #3 and drop Gennaro to #4. Both are having great seasons but Heffner does have a major over him from earlier this season. Ross was basically idle (1 forfeit) and remains #1 followed by 2nd ranked Florin who won the Beacon Bulldog and also notched a win by fall over #5 Morano from Middletown. The 152 weight class has a ton of depth too! Let’s keep our eyes on Legget from NFA, Doherty from Monticello, Wernicki from MW, Thomas from Wallkill and Shaw from Burke!

160 Pounds
1. Steve Gazzillo – Cornwall

Top ranked Gazzillo has buzzed through the competition since our last ranking including a wbf over #3 Hathaway who has recently returned to action. Gallo from MV has pinned every opponent since ESC including wins over two wrestlers to keep an eye on – Mazzella from Warwick and Douthit from Burke. Velazquez from Middletown stays at #4 via his win by fall over #5 Burgos from Pine Bush. Two others to keep an eye on at 160 are Patterson from NFA and Hadallar from Monroe Woodbury!

170 Pounds

No changes at 170 and not really much to report. Serafini pinned Felice from MW and remains #1. Bucci and Satriano finished 1st and 3rd respectively at the Beacon Bulldog and they are ranked #2 and #3 here. Noteboom has gone 3-1 since ESC but his only loss was at 182 to Bennet from Kingston so he stays at #4 and McLaughlin’s only loss since ESC has been to a hammer from S2 so he stays at #5 at 170! Felice from MW and Kollbeck from Kingston are two others who will contend for medals at the S9 Tournament.

182 Pounds

Zavier Bennet had a great week including wins over Noteboom and Knisell and takes over the #1 spot at 182 in Section 9. Owen from Saugerties slides down to #2 and #’s 3-5 remain the same as Babb, Russell and Wojehowski have all been undefeated since ESC. There is a little depth at 182 too as we should keep our eyes on Geysen from MV, Knisell from Saugerties, and Mike Cassidy from Cornwall.

195 Pounds

We have several changes at 195 including a new #1 and a brand new name to the rankings! Let’s start up top where we had a showdown between DeCapua and Santander at the NFA vs MW dual. This was a rematch of last year’s S9 semifinal which was won by Santander, however this match would go to the state placewinner DeCapua via 8-7 decision. Carson Henry hold at #3 but we have a new #4 in James DeAveiro from E/L/SW. DeAveiro has flownunder he radar most of the year but notched a big win over Owen from Saugerties. He is currently sporting a 20-1 record and his only loss has been a 6-0 decision to S11 stud Pelech from Longwood. Barley from Kingston, who was champ at the Beacon Bulldog, drops to the #5 slot for now. Several others to watch at 195 including Josh Keller and Collin Cassidy who are both from Cornwall!

220 Pounds
1. Will Leonard – Cornwall

We have a little bit of a shake-up at 220. ESC champ Leonard is cruising along and remains at #1 but our new #2 is Crisfield from VC who had a head to head over Duke at ESC. Duke drops down to #3 and Strauss is now up to #4 followed by MV’s Castro at #5. James Oosterom from Port Jervis is definitely worthy of a top 5 ranking but is out resting an injury so we will wait for his return. Defending D2 champ Devin Dixon is having another solid season and will definitely be a favorite for making a return trip to Albany. NFA defeats MW in one of the most exciting duals of the year! The tilt started at 106 where NFA’s Jaden Hansen defeated Dylan Winters 2-1. The score went back and forth with several key wins by NFA namely Brandon Delarosa pinning Dylan Burgos and Maxx DeCapua topping Sam Santander 7-6. MW was up 35-33 with one match to go setting the stage for Jackson Merli to major Richie Toledo by a 10-2 score and win the dual for the Goldbacks! Up in Kingston, Warwick edged Kingston 39-34 in a dual that featured a few great match-ups including Bennet (K) dec 7-3 over Noteboom (W) and Chenier (K) maj dec 15-6 over D. Greco (W).

In one of the most anticipated matches of the evening, Red Hook’s Matt Morris defeated Rondout Valley’s Nikko Walsh by a score of 7-4! How about James DeAveiro from E/L/SW topping Anthony Owen from Saugerties at 195!!! Owen is the top ranked wrestler at 182 in S8! DeAveiro has been completely over-looked in the rankings thus far but that will definitely change! He’s 21-1 and his only loss was a 6-0 decision to one of the best D1 wrestlers in Section 11 – Tyler Pelech! Great job James!!! Over in Middletown we saw Pine Bush’s Nick Florin notch a win by fall over Destin Morano at 152 followed by Middletown’s Joe Velazquez pinning Pine Bush’s Dylan Burgos at 160! At the MV vs Cornwall dual we saw Greiner (MV) defeat Rourke (Cornwall) at 99, Albornoz (MV) major Heffner (Cornwall) at 152, Wojehowski (Cornwall) top Geysen (MV) at 182, and Castro (MV) defeat C. In Slate Hill we had Alex Greco (War) dec Luke Greiner (MV) 5-1 at 99, Joe Habert (MV) major Drew Greco (War) 10-0 at 113, and Will Noteboom (War) top Scott Geysen (MV) 5-2. Out in Monroe we saw Canabillas (DePaul) major McGinty 10-2.

With the Section 9 Duals and the Eastern States Classic in the books it’s time that we roll out our first rankings of 2019! As a reminder, these rankings are just for fun. These rankings, or any rankings for that matter, have absolutely nothing to do with where a wrestler will be seeded at the Section 9 Tournament in February. Seeding the tournament is done by a formula and it is based completely upon results. Rankings are subjective … seeding is objective. Amell is still top dog at 99. The Saugerties senior made it to the R16 at the ESC as did #2 Marchese from Washingtonville. Merli now has a common opponent win over MW’s Toledo (Adams from Monsignor Farrell) so he takes over at #3 followed by #4 Toledo and #5 Ricciuto from VC. Tufano from Port Jervis is having a great year and seems to be the top D2 wrestler at the weight. Two others to keep an eye on are Greco form Warwick and Rourke from Cornwall who have recently traded wins.

The Minisink Valley 7th grader has been dominating local competition and just placed 5th at the Eastern States Classic where both of his losses where by decision to last year’s state finalists at 99 – Stevo Poulin and Chase Liardi! One of the local contenders who Ryder has yet to face is Middletown’s Justin Morales who sits at #2. Ryder does have a common over Morales – Echeverria from Long Beach. Winters had a tough go at S9 Duals losing by fall to both Ryder and Morales but he remains #3 followed by Matt Davis from Wallkill. Cracking the rankings for the first time this week is NFA’s Jaden Hansen who is our new #5 at 106. Hansen picked up a nice 4-1 decision over Tyler Reed from Cornwall who is also one to watch here. Peter Bender from Highland is having a great season as well and may be the top D2 106 pounder in S9!

Chenier had a convincing win over #4 Habert from Minisink Valley who comes in just behind #3 Morris from Red Hook. We could possibly see Walsh, Morris and Habert at the Gene Brigham on Saturday! Monroe Woodbury’s Santos Ocasio holds the #5 slot at 113 but there are several others to keep an eye on here including Elliott Crocco from New Paltz who has two recent wins over a very solid Austin Maddox from Washingtonville. Drew Greco from Warwick came in 4th at the Shoreline and will definitely contend here! Let’s not forget MV’s Andrew Filip who won the Yonkers Tournament and Goshen’s Dylan Tierny who’s also having a nice season.

Coming in at #2 is MV’s Nick Picariello who fell short of placing at the ESC but wrestled very well! His two losses were close decisions to very tough wrestlers. Picariello lost 5-2 to 3X NYS place winner Caleb Robinson from Walton and 4-1 to 2X NYS qualifier Thomas Hughes from Fulton. Liam Bullock is having a great year and comes in at #3 followed by fellow D2 contenders John Antonelli from Marlboro and Joey Curreri from Eldred/Liberty/Sullivan West.

Second ranked Tigue looked solid at ESC before being eliminated by a tough 8-4 decision to state champ Marek Bush. Numbers 3, 4, and 5 are razor close! This week we went with Urena at #3 based on his competitive performances against two hammers at the ESC. Urena lost 10-3 to ESC finalist and National Prep Champ Zeke Escalara from Wyoming Seminary and also lost 4-0 to NYS qualifier Deam Shambo. DeLaRosa from NFA is at #4 followed by Burgos from Monroe Woodbury who returns to the rankings at #5 after returning to action from an early season injury! Travis Phillips from VC and Eli Weinstein from Goshen are both having good seasons and will definitely contend for medals at the Section 9 Tournament!

Big shake-up in the 132 pound rankings where we have a new #1 in Washingtonville’s Tommy Maddox! Maddox has returned from an early season injury in impressive fashion by notching wins over former #1’s Malherio and Maddox. He also picked up a great win at ESC over a very tough Sean Petersen from Islip who defeated NYS #3 Logan Sciotto earlier this season! Malherio looked solid at ESC going 2-2 so he is our #2 and Romano, who only lost 6-4 to eventual ESC champ Justin McDougald, comes in at #3. Pat Ross is #4 at 132 and our new #5 is Middletown’s Josh Sam picked up a nice win over NFA’s Luke Fischer who is one to watch here. Aiden Cuppett from New Paltz has jumped on everyone’s radar after pinning Heinlein from Saugerties in a dual and then only losing 3-2 to Malherio at Mat Wars!

Ontora’s Ross is on fire and we move him up to #2 followed by New Paltz sophomore Palanca who took 4th at the Mat Wars. MW’s Estevez remains at #4 but we have a new #5 in Port Jervis’ Gavin Staerker who recently beat prev ious #5 Ceasar Luna from Highland 4-0 in a dual! Warwick has tow wrestlers who are having nice seasons at 138 in Gibbons and Schmalfuhs and Cornwall’s Alex Burns will also be in the medal hunt!

The anticipated head-to-head match between McGinty and Askey never occurred at the S9 Duals so maybe we will see the two lock horns at their upcoming dual meet. Nicholas Albornoz from MV remains our #3 and Nick Curreri from E/L/SW stays at #4. Jaccob Gonzalez from Minisink Valley is having a great year and takes over the #5 spot at 145.

The top two at 152 remain the same. #1 ranked Pat Ross keeps rolling along. He notched his 100th career win in the semis of the Dan Wickham Tournament this weekend; then in the finals he defeated a 2X Section 8 champ earning him MOW honors for the 2nd week in a row! Pine Bush’s Nick Florin had a strong showing at the ESC. Florin went 3-2 and was one match away from placing. He also picked up a 3-2 win in the Rd 32 over the eventual 3rd place finisher Stefan Major from Kings Park! Numbers 3-5 and some others at 152 are very even which should provide great excitement for the medal round at the S9 Tournament. For now we have Gennaro from Washingtonville at #3, Heffner from Cornwall at #4, and Morano from Middletown at #5. Let’s keep our eyes on Connor Leggett from NFA, Doug Doherty from Monticello, Max Wernicki from MW, Kraig Thomas from Wallkill, Chris Fini from Goshen and James Shaw from Burke!

Alden Hathaway from Wallkill is set to return and he’s our #3 followed by Joe Velazquez from Middletown at #4 and Dylan Burgos is still #5. Let’s not overlook Nick Hadallar from Monroe Woodbury, Nick Patterson from NFA, and Brendan Douthit from Burke.

Placing higher than your seed is always a good thing! Bucci was not at ESC but holds at #2 followed by Satriano then Noteboom. Chris McLaughlin remains at #5 at 170. The MV junior gutted out a few nice wins at S9 Duals over wrestlers we should keep an eye on, namely Steve Felice from Monroe Woodbury and Steven Kollbeck from Kingston.

Babb picked up a nice win at ESC over a very tough Geysen from MV so we’ll go Babb #3, Russell #4, and Wojehowski #5 for now. We cannot overlook Knisell from Saugerties, Mike Cassidy from Cornwall, or the aforementioned Geysen from Minisink!

Cornwall’s Collin Cassidy will also be in the mix at 195 in February! ** James DeAveiro from E/L/SW is having a great season and his absence from these rankings has been a terrible oversight! DeAveiro just defeated Owen from Saugerties recently, he has a 20-1 record, and he will definitely crack the top 5 at 195 on our next rankings!**

Oosterom, Crisfield, and Strauss hold onto the 3-5 spots respectively. Minisink’s Tyler Castro keeps getting better and will definitely be in medal contention at the S9 tourney in February.

One huge change at 285 – we have a new #1! Minisink Valley sophomore Adam Fenner defeated MW’s Preston Havison 6-0 in the last match of the Section 9 Duals finals and takes over the top spot at heavyweight! Havison pinned Fenner in their meeting back in December. I have a feeling these two will lock horns at least one or two more times this year! VC’s Moore defeats #4 Williams and is at #3 this week while the Middletown 7th grader Stephan Monchery holds on to our 5 spot at heavyweight!
