99 Pounds

Central Valley Academy freshman Mason Bush (right)

The Favorites
This weight class is always the most difficult to predict because many of the entries have very little varsity experience.  That said, there is certainly plenty of talented wrestlers entered at 99 pounds for this year’s Eastern States Classic.  There is one wrestler who is a returning state place winner, Mason Bush from Central Valley Academy.  He finished 5th in NYS last year and is definitely one of the favorites here.  Stevo Poulin from Shenendehowa has been impressive this year with his only loss coming at 106 to Levine from Wyoming Seminary. Hilton’s Rocco Camillaci is undefeated thus far as well as Jared Weinhaus from Scahem East and Luke Smith from Hauppauge. Carter Schubert from Williamson-Marion-Sodus, Dante Geislinger from Norwich, Jace Schafer from Pal-Mac, and Chase Liardi from Massapequa from Massapequa are all very tough and will contend here.  Section 9 definitely has a few kids to watch at 99 namely Justin Morales from Middletown, Nikko Walsh from Rondout Valley, and Christian Prokosch from Cornwall.

Section 9 Entries
Justin Morales (Middletown), Nikko Walsh (Rondout Valley), Christian Prokosch (Cornwall), Evan Hewitt (Minisink Valley), Grant Barczak (Monroe Woodbury), Richard Toledo (Monroe Woodbury)

106 Pounds

2017 NYS D2 Champ Anthony Noto

The Favorites
This is an absolutely loaded weight class but we’ll start with nationally ranked Anthony Noto from Honeoye Falls/Lima.  The sophomore is ranked 15th in the nation by FloWrestling and was the D2 NYS champion at 99 pounds last year. His opponent in last year’s state final, Jordan Titus from Center Moriches, will also be in contention here. Terry Adams from Monsignor Farrell was an ESC finalist at 99 last year. He was also a state finalist last year in D1 and his semifinal opponent, Ivan Garcia from Port Chester, will definitely be in the hunt.  Matt Griffin from Jamesville Dewitt – CBA placed at 99 in last years’s ESC and he is a 2X NYS placewinner. Some others to watch at 106 include Dennis Robin from Arlington, Len Balducci from Pleasantville, Josiah Encarnacion from Wantagh, Tim Levine from Wyoming Seminary, and Carter Baer from Gouverneur. We should also keep our eyes on Section 9 wrestlers Greg Fischer from NFA and Nick Picariello from Minisink Valley.

Section 9 Entries

Greg Diakomihalis scrambling with Nic Bouzakis at the Journeymen Classic

2X NYS Champion Greg Diakomihalis is the defending ESC champion at this weight and he is currently ranked #6 in the country by FloWrestling.  Ranked right behind him by Flo at #7 is Dylan Ryder from Half Hallow Hills West. Ryder came is 2nd at ESC last year at 106 and was a state champion at the same weight. National power Wyoming Seminary has two entries here and they are both capable of finishing high on the medal stand.  Nick Botello has been nationally ranked at times this season and just finished 5th at the PowerAde while Drew Munch was a Prep Nationals champ at 106 last year and came in 4th at the NHSCA Freshman Nationals. Let’s not forget about Central Valley Academy senior Jon Charles who finished 3rd at the ESC last hear and won the states in 2016 and finished 2nd in 2017. Super 32 Champ Adam Busiello

Adam Busiello from Section 11 is the odds on favorite here. The Eastport South Manor junior is a 3X NYS champion and is the 3rd ranked 126 pound wrestler in the nation according to Flo!  Busiello will not go untested though and one of the wrestlers looking to pick him off is Monroe Woodbury junior Marco Vespa.  Vespa finished 4th in NYS last year. Busiello may also receive a test from his teammate Zach Redding who was the ESC champ at 106 last season and finished 3rd in NYS. There will definitely be some out-of-state wrestlers in contention here as well, specifically Ryan Jack from Danbury and Chris Trelli from Bristol. Anthony Sciotto from Rocky Point (3rd in NYS) is as dangerous as they come and don’t look past Caleb Robinson (2X state place winner) from Walton. Wyoming Seminary will have a competitive wrestler in nearly every weight they enter and 120 is no exception with Zeke Escalera who just finished 3rd at the Powerade.  We should also keep an eye on Brock Delsignore from South Glens Falls, Ryan Burgos from Hilton, Sal Jones from Long Island Lutheran, and Keith Cassar from Oyster Bay.

There are several wrestlers who will push Bartlett namely 2X NYS champ Orion Anderson from Schyulerville and 2X CT state champ Melquisidec Ortiz. We should also keep our eye on New Canaan, CT freshman Justin Mastroianni who went 4-2 and was one win away from placing at the Beast of the East. This could come down to the battle of the “Jakes”…Silverstein and Hendricks! Jake Hendricks from Wyoming Seminary is currently ranked  10th in the nation at 160 while Jake Silverstein from Hauppauge is ranked #17 at 152.  This will not be a two-horse race however! Chris Barker from Fairport is as tough as they come and you can’t look past Minisink Valley senior Timmy Ganuncio or Jake Nolan from Saranac. Reminder….Eastern States Classic is right around the corner and we are always looking for volunteers.  If you can help in any capacity please contact me at sectionixwrestling@gmail.com.

6. Richard Toledo – Monroe Woodbury, junior

Walsh was impressive at the Mid-Hudson!  He recorded a 2-1 win over #2 Prokosch and was awarded Freshman MOW! Marchese, Hewitt, Davis, and Toledo have no head-to-heads and very few common opponents so 3-6 is a toss-up at this point.  VC’s Lennon has looked good as well!

106 Pounds
1. Greg Fischer – NFA, senior
2. Nick Picariello – Minisink Valley, sophomore
3. Justin Morales – Middletown, sophomore
4. Jacob Chenier – Kingston, sophomore
5. Drew Greco – Warwick, freshman
6. Matt Morris – Red Hook, sophomore

Fischer looked awesome at the Mid-Hudson. He finished 3rd and his only loss was a tight 4-2 decision to eventual champ and 2017 state place winner Ivan Garcia from Section 1. Picariello lost a close match to Fischer earlier this year so we have him at #2, right in front of Morales who missed weight for 99/101 at the Massapequa Holiday Tournamnet so he stays here for now.  He will be a force at 101 if he can make it! Chenier, Greco, and Morris round out 4-6 but keep an eye on Grant Barczak from Monroe Woodbury.

1. Dylan Earl – Monroe Woodbury, senior
2. Jordan Suarez – Minisink Valley, sophomore
3. Ryan Burgos – Monroe Woodbury, junior
4. Hunter Brown – Warwick, senior
5. Eric Tigue – Port Jervis, 8th grade
6. Derek Ellison – Wallkill, junior

2017 state placer Earl drops down to 113 and takes over as the new #1.  Section 9 finalist Suarez also drops down and won the 113 title at Kittatinny so comes in at #2.  Burgos lost to teammate Earl in the finals at Massapequa and is #3. Brown has been dominating and shouldn’t be overlooked while Tigue and Ellison are also having strong seasons.

2. Brandon DeLaRosa – Newburgh Free Academy, junior
3. Patrick Ross – Onteora, freshman
4. Liam Bullock – Chester, junior
5. Travis Phillips – Valley Central, sophomore
6. Joey Amato – Port Jervis, sophomore

Returning state placer Vespa drops down to 120 and rolls through the Massapequa tournament.  He’s our clear #1 here. DeLaRosa didn’t make it through Day 1 at the Mid-Hudson due to a defensive pin against Lyle from Wallkill but we give him a pass and keep him at #2. Ross took 4th at Mid-Hudson and is our #3 while Bullock from Chester comes in at #4. Phillips looked tough at Mid-Hudson and is at #5 while our new #6 is Port’s Joey Amaoto who cam ein 3rd at a tournament at Bethlehem Catholic in PA.

Faison lost to Albis in the finals of the Mid-Hudson and takes over #1 at 126. Maddox defeated Romano head to head and jumps all the way to #2 followed by #3 Romano and New Paltz frosh Palanca who had an impressive major of defending D2 champ Ross. 3. Carson Sauschuck – Port Jervis, senior

Askey makes an impressive return to action at Mid-Hudson.  The Pine Bush junior came in 3rd and his only loss was to eventual champ Lievano from S8. Sauschuck is at #3 and we have a new #4 in Max Wernicki who took 3rd at the Massapequa tournament. VC’s Phillips looked solid at Mid-Hudson as did Faveron from Onteora whose only S9 loss is to Askey.

2. Joe McGinty – Monroe Woodbury, sophomore
3. Frank Fea – Goshen, senior
4. Dylan Greer – Pine Bush, senior
5. Nate Ross – Onteora, sophomore
6. Mat Malherio – Highland, junior

138 is a great weight to follow in both D1 and D2.  Two time D1 champ Dom Vetrano is our #1 but don’t sleep on MW sophomore McGinty who just placed 2nd at the Massapequa tournament. Fea and Greer are both very good and will not roll over for anyone.  Nate Ross comes in at #5 followed by Malhario from Highland.  Gavin Staerker from Port Jervis and Nick Curerri from Eldred are both in the mix here too!

3. Ian Houck – Rondout Valley, senior
4. Nick Florin – Pine Bush, junior
5. Zach Chartrand – Onteora, senior
6. Dan Mandic – Goshen, senior

Vetrano holds the top spot at 145 but the next 3 were very tough to rank. Gazzillo had a common opponent win over Houck at Mid-Hudson so we’llmake him #2 followed by Houck then #4 Florin from Pine Bush. Chartrand drops down to 145 is our new #5 while Mandic remains #6.

Stewart finished 2nd at Massapequa and his loss was to a kid from Canada. Pushman, Heffner, and Velaquez are all having great years and round out 4-6.

3. Griffin Roddy – Port Jervis, senior
4. Ray Napolitano – Valley Central, senior

3. Alex Miller – Newburgh Free Academy, senior
4. Graeme Knisell – Saugerties, sophomore

6. Luke Wojehowski – Cornwall, junior

Yanis dominated the competition at Kittatinny and remains #1. Tremper pinned Knisell and placed 3rd at the Mid-Hudson and moved up to #2 followed by Miller then Knisell. Two Cornwall wrestlers, Cassidy and Wojehowski, grab the #5 and #6 slots respectively.

195 Pounds
1. Maxx DeCapua – Newburgh Free Academy, sophomore
2. Sam Santander – Monroe Woodbury, junior
3. Julius Oquendo – Middletown, senior
4. Andrew Wierzbicki – Warwick, senior
5. Ben Santarpia – Washingtonville, senior
6. Anton Juncaj – Minisink Valley, junior

DeCapua was the champ at the Mid-Hudson. Oquendo drops to 195 for the NFA/Middletown dual and loses 5-4 TB1 to DeCapua so we move him up to #3. Santander, Wierzbicki, and Santarpia were idle over the holiday. Juncaj looked tough finishing 3rd at the Kittatinny tournament. Ryan Hobson didn’t make it to Day 2 at the Mid-Hudson but gave champ DeCapua his toughest test on the tournament on Day 1 so he’s definitely someone we should keep an eye on!

Red Hook sophomore Dietrich wins the Mid-Hudson and had a head-to head over #3 Moore so he takes over #2.  Havison came in 5th at Massapequa and is having a good year as is Williams who took 5th at Mid-Hudson. Our new #6 is Port Jervis sophomore Oosterom who is putting together a very nice season thus far!
