Section 9 Rankings # 4

It’s been a busy few weeks capped off by the Eastern States Classic.  Most wrestlers are at the weights where they will be in the post season, however I’m certain we’ll see some last minute jockeying around for position!  I decided to rank 6 wrestlers per weight for this edition. Greiner and Elfstrum are still out but I have a feeling we’ll see them on the next rankings!  As always, respectful comments are welcomed at sectionixwrestling@gmail.com.  Enjoy!

99 lbs.
1. Nick Picariello – Minisink Valley, freshman
2. Jordan Suarez – Pine Bush, freshman

3. Colby Amell – Saugerties, sophomore
4. Christian Prokosch – Cornwall, junior
5. Justin Morales – Middletown, freshman
6. Jacob Chenier – Kingston, freshman
Pine Bush freshman Jordan Suarez makes the drop to 99 and gets right into the mix at #2 here. Suarez lost a close decision to #1 Piccarello at the MV vs PB dual a few weeks ago and had a wbf over now #6 Chenier.  Picareillo, Prokosch, and Morales all 1-2 at Eastern States and Amell with a wbf over #6 106 Harris.

106 lbs.
1. Dylan Earl – Monroe Woodbury, junior
2. Greg Fischer – NFA, junior
3. Ryan Burgos – Monroe Woodbury, sophomore
4. Kevin Urena – Pine Bush, sophomore
5. Ethan Palanca – New Paltz, 8th grade

6. Wade Harris – Red Hook, senior
Earl and Fischer still hold on to the top two spots respectively however Fischer made a strong case for taking over #1 with his strong showing at ESC which included a win over Queensbury’s Antoine Grace. Burgos and Urena drops to 106 and grabs the #3 and #4 spots while New Paltz 8th grader Ethan Palanca enters the rankings at #5 with his win over #6 Wade Harris.  Harris avenged a Mid Hudson Tournament loss to Pat Ross by pinning the Onteora 8th grader to grab the #6 spot.

113 lbs.
1. Marco Vespa – Monroe Woodbury, sophomore
2. Tyler Lynch – Minisink Valley, senior

3. Matthew Romano – Valley Central, freshman
4. Jimmy Heinlein – Saugerties, sophomore
5. Avery Ellison – Wallkill, senior

6. Liam Bullock – Chester, junior
Lynch drops down to 113 and has a great showing at Eastern States placing 6th. Vespa dnp at Eastern States but has a head to head over Lynch at 120 earlier in the season so he keeps the #1 spot.  Avery Ellison picked up a couple of nice wins at the ESC and enters the board at #5 while Chester junior Liam Bullock is undefeated this season and grabs the #6 position!

120 lbs.
1. James Faison – Wallkill, freshman
2. Joe McGinty – Monroe Woodbury, freshman
3. Nick Conetta – Chester, freshman
4. Tommy Askey – Pine Bush, freshman
5. Chris Bouton – Kingston, senior
6. Patrick Owens – Monticello, senior

Faison has a breakout weekend and is the new #1 at 120.  The Wallkill freshman went 3-2 at the ESC and notched wins over Tyler Albis (ranked #8 by NYWN) and state qualifier Tony Negron.  McGinty went 1-2 at ESC and stays at #2 for now but Chester frosh Nick Conetta is 15-0 with a win over #6 Owens and is right on his heels. Number 4 Askey had a big win over  #5 Bouton in a dual…Bouton has looked very tough since making the cut to 120 including a 6-4 win over MV’s Savacool at the ESC.

126 lbs.
1. Robert Satriano – Valley Central, senior
2. Andrew Davis – Wallkill, senior
3. Cameron Wernicki – Monroe Woodbury, senior
4. Nate Ross – Onteora, freshman
5. Chris Massaro – New Paltz, senior

6. Nick Albornoz – Minisink Valley, sophomore
This is tough weight to rank…126 is deep and will get deeper if MV’s Connor Greiner returns to action this week.  Satriano, Davis and Wernicki are all very talented and could probably beat each other on any giver day.  Ross has a head to head over Massaro who looked very tough at the ESC.  Albornoz has looked good since cutting to 126 but this final spot could have easily gone to MW’s Emanuel Ward who recently was defeated by another contender here, Middletown’s Ishmael Alicea.

132 lbs.
1. Ian Houck – Rondout Valley, junior
2. Brad Bonner – Wallkill, senior

3. Anthony Sountis – Monroe Woodbury, senior
4. Vinny Vetrano – Minisink Valley, junior
5. Robert Estevez – Monroe Woodbury, sophomore

6. Tyler Matos – Middletown, senior
Houck goes 0-2 at Eastern States but still no reason to drop him from the top spot. Bonner, Sountis, and Vinny Vetrano all did well at ESC and could potentially battle it out for the D1 crown in February.  Estevez enters the rankings via his impressive win over #6 Matos at the Massapequa Tournament.

138 lbs.
1. Dominic Vetrano – Minisink Valley, junior
2. Louis Libutti – Monroe Woodbury, senior
3. Dylan Greer – Pine Bush, junior
4. Robert Randall – NFA, senior

5. Kyle Ripa – Wallkill, senior
6. Mat Malherio – Highland, sophomore

Dom Vetrano drops to 138 and takes over the #1 spot here however previous #1 Libutti from Monroe is having an outstanding season and plans on making me eat my words by dropping him to #2.  Pine Bush junior Dylan Green made his return to action in style by winning the Shoreline so we put him at #3. Robert Randall from NFA has been solid all year and very tough since dropping to 138.  Ripa is having a great year and has posted 2-point wins over #6 Malherio and next in line Pasquale Satriano from VC.

145 lbs.
1. Brandon Bobe – Washingtonville, senior
2. William Harrison – Port Jervis, sophomore
3. Tom Fini – Monroe Woodbury, senior

4. Shawn Burgos – Pine Bush, junior
5. Tyler Serafini – NFA, sophomore
6. Mike Kubik – Goshen, senior
This weight just became very interesting.  Bobe drops down and becomes the new #1 but seemed to get injured at the ESC after looking very strong on his opening round win.  Harrison and Fini are still rolling along as are Burgos and Serafini.  Kubik from Goshen enters the rankings at #6 but it was a toss-up between him and Justyn Kelly from Monticello who has looked great since dropping to 145.

152 lbs.
1. Evan Barczak – Monroe Woodbury, senior
2. Lucas Wightman – Warwick, senior
3. Nijee Noble – Kingston, senior
4. Dillon Ross – Onteora, junior
5. Tristen Schiafo – Red Hook, junior
6. Nathaniel Garcia – Middletown, senior
Barczak cemented his #1 spot at 152 by storming to the finals of the Eastern States Classic.  The Drexel commit lost in sudden victory of the finals to 2X state finalist Peter Pappas from S8.  Wightman made a statement by placing 8th at the ESC and notched a few impressive wins along the way.  Shiafo and Ross both went 1-2 at ESC but Ross avenged his loss to Schiafo at the Mid Hudson by defeating him 4-2 at the Jamie Mormile so we’ll go Ross #4 and Schiafo #5.  Nijee’s title at the Mid Hudson keeps him over them for now.  Garcia won the title at the Henrick Hudson Tournament and enters the rankings as our #6.

160 lbs.
1. Ryan Ferro – Warwick, senior
2. Timmy Ganuncio – Minisink Valley, junior

3. Noah Curreri – Eldred/Liberty/Sullivan West, senior
4. Owen Daly – Pine Bush, senior
5. Zachary Beam – Valley Central, senior
6. Lester Larkai – Washingtonville, senior

Ferro was a late scratch at the ESC but the defending state champ has a pretty secure hold on the top spot at 160 in Section 9.  Ganuncio has been wrestling great!  He lost a regular decision to Ferro in a dual and at the ESC he notched a win over Munch from Commack who finished 5th. He did not place however his two losses where to the Cuomo (champion) and Loew (3rd). Curreri entered the ESC as the #3 seed however he did not place after suffering heart breaking losses to the kids who ended up finishing 4th and 5th.  Ganuncio’s common win over Curerri (Munsch) is the reason for them flipping #2 and #3 positions.  Daly, Beam, and Larkai have all been very solid and they round out 4-6.

170 lbs.
1. Mark Ohanian – Valley Central, senior
2. Adonis Morano – Middletown, junior
3. Maxx DeCapua – NFA, freshman

4. Brian Mascaro – Wallkill, junior
5. Jason Butler – Port Jervis, junior
6. Demetrius Moore – Minisink Valley, senior

Fekishazy moves up to 182 so VC’s Ohanian takes over the top spot at 170.  He had a very solid ESC. He dnp but his two losses were to the eventual champion Tyler Barnes (7-5 sudden victory) and state qualifier Austin Trombley (2-1). Morano was 2-2 at the ESC and was one sv loss away from placing as was DeCapua who is now at 170.  Marcaro is super solid as is Butler who went 1-2 at the ESC.  MV senior Moore returns to the board at #6 but has MW’s Santanter and Middletown’s Ali nipping at his heels!

182 lbs.
1. Mike Fekishazy – Wallkill, senior
2. Joey Yanis – Minisink Valley, junior
3. Ben Cuppett – New Paltz, senior
4. Kyle Strauss – Monroe Woodbury, senior
5. Henricus Van Heedstede Obelt, senior

6. Will Leonard – Cornwall, sophomore
Fekishazy looked awesome at ESC making it to the finals where he medically forfeited out to a 2nd place finish.  Yanis had a nice ESC tournament making it to Day 2 before suffering losses to Louis Deprez (#2 in USA) and state placer Tyreek Bromley. Cuppett went 1-2 while VHO and Leonard both went 0-2.  Strauss at #4 has been very tough since dropping from 195.

195 lbs.
1. Andrew Covais – Minisink Valley, senior
2. Samson Perez – Monroe Woodbury, senior
3. Tom Kearns – Goshen, senior
4. Alex Leonty – Washingtonville, senior
5. John Cassidy – Cornwall, senior
6. Thomas Keller – Cornwall, senior
For the time in a row, 195 was the most difficult weight to rank.  It seems like there are about 7 or 8 wrestlers who might be the best here on any given day.  Covais has the best total body of work so we’ll return him to the #1 spot.  Perez drops to 195 and picks up a close win over Kearns at ESC.  Leonty has been idle for a while but will still be a contender here.  Cassidy, who placed at ESC, and his teammate Keller seem to be very equal.  Middletown’s Oquendo, Wallkill’s Kras, and ELSW’s Goodall are also very tough here.

220 lbs.
1. Ryan Ellefsen – Goshen, senior
2. Horace Duke – Middletown, senior
3. Scyler Phillips – Port Jervis, senior
4. James Ball – Saugerties, senior
5. Tyler Bohenka – Valley Central, senior

6. David Strauss – Monroe Woodbury, sophomore
Although he was probably expecting a better finish, taking 4th at the ESC is outstanding and Ellefsen is still the clear #1 here and a contender for a state title in February.  Duke has been excellent with his only S9losses coming to Ellefsen.  Phillips was a late scratch at ESC but holds at #3 as does Ball at #4.  VC senior Bohenka had a nice win over #6 Strauss in their dual versus MW so he enteres the rankings at #5.

285 lbs.
1. Andrew Fenner – Minisink Valley, junior
2. Norris Gipson – Middletown, senior
3. Guy Soumah – New Paltz, senior
4. Austin Taylor – Warwick, senior
5. Will McCartney – NFA, senior
6. Peter Leser – Saugerties, senior

Gipson placed at ESC and Fenner did not but we keep Fenner #1 and Gipson #2 because of the head to head wbf by Fenner.  No reason to move Soumah, Taylor, or McCartney and we add #6 Leser to the board here.

Section 9 Individual Rankings #3

Now that we are done with the holiday tournaments I think it’s a good time to post some updated rankings.  Many, but not all, wrestlers have dropped down a weight class because of the +2 so there is have been a lot of changes!  Since I had some extra time over the holidays I decided to post the rankings in a slightly different format and provide some notes for each weight class.

As always, I apologize if I have overlooked anyone and please feel free to send respectful feedback to sectionixwrestling@gmail.com. Let’s take a look at the top guys in each weight…

99 lbs.
1. Nick Picariello – Minisink Valley, freshman
2. Colby Amell – Saugerties, sophomore
3. Christian Prokosch – Cornwall, junior
4. Justin Morales – Middletown, freshman
5. Jacob Chenier – Kingston, freshman
The 99 pound weight class in Section 9 is as deep as I can ever remember!  Picariello’s only losses have been in NJ at 106 pounds.  Amell just had an impressive showing at the Mid Hudson including a pin over Prokosch who he lost to earlier this season.  Morales just made the cut to 101 and placed at the very tough Massapequa Holiday Tournament where he picked up a win over MW’s Nicky Scancarello who is definitely a wrestler to watch here.  Chenier is a tough freshman with a lot of upside.  This weight may become even tougher if Pine Bush freshman Jordan Suarez makes this weight!

106 lbs.
1. Dylan Earl – Monroe Woodbury, junior
2. Greg Fischer – NFA, junior
3. Jordan Suarez – Pine Bush, freshman
4. Pat Ross – Onteora, 8th grade
5. Wade Harris – Red Hook, senior
Earl has looked great and just picked up the title at the Massapequa tournament. Fischer looked awesome at the Mid Hudson!  He took 3rd  however he was dominating the eventual champ in the semis 7-0 before getting caught in tight headlock and pinned. Suarez gave Earl all he could handle a few weeks ago and might be even tougher if he drops to 99!  Ross made it to the finals of the Mid Hudson by defeating Harris – a 2X Section 9 champion!  If MW’s Ryan Burgos can make it to 108 he will definitely be a factor here!

113 lbs.
1. Marco Vespa – Monroe Woodbury, sophomore
2. Matthew Romano – Valley Central, freshman
3. Ryan Burgos – Monroe Woodbury, sophomore
4. Jimmy Heinlein – Saugerties, sophomore
5. Lucas Fischer – NFA, sophomore
Vespa has been dominating this year but we can’t sleep on Mid Hudson champion Romano who is undefeated thus far! Burgos has been very impressive as has Heinlein who made the cut to 113 for the Mid Hudson where he finished 2nd to Romano. Fischer makes his way into the top 5 here with a 3rd place finish at the Mid Hudson where he beat teammate Tyler Dellatorre 5-3 in OT in their medal match.  Pine Bush sophomore Kevin Urena will also be in the conversation here.

120 lbs.
1. Tyler Lynch – Minisink Valley, senior
2. James Faison – Wallkill, freshman
3. Joe McGinty – Monroe Woodbury, freshman
4. Nick Conetta – Chester, freshman
5. Carson Sauschuck – Port Jervis, junior
Lynch looked great taking the title in Kittatinny, NJ!  Faison (5th at Mid Hudson) and McGinty (3rd at Massapequa) also had great holiday tournaments.  Conetta and Sauschuck have had great years thus far as have Tommy Askey from Pine Bush and Brandon DeLaRosa from NFA.  120 is shaping up to be a very solid weight in Section 9!

126 lbs.
1. Andrew Davis – Wallkill, senior
2. Cameron Wernicki – Monroe Woodbury, senior
3. Derrick Magsamen – Pine Bush, junior
4. Nate Ross – Onteora, freshman
5. Emanuel Ward – Monroe Woodbury, senior
Like 120, this weight class will also be pretty deep on the D1 side.  Davis made it to the semis of the Mid Hudson before forfeiting out to 4th place.  Wernicki placed 4th at the Massapequa Holiday Tournament where his teammate Ward went 2-2 and was one win from placing.  Ross has only lost to Davis, Conetta, and a tough S11 kid and has a pin over Nick Curreri who made it to the semis at the Windsor Tournament and should not be overlooked.  Minisink Valley’s Connor Greiner, a 2X Section 9 champion, should be returning to action very soon and will definitely be a factor here!

132 lbs.
1. Ian Houck – Rondout Valley, junior
2. Robert Satriano – Valley Central, senior
3. Brad Bonner – Wallkill, senior
4. Anthony Sountis – Monroe Woodbury, senior
5. Patrick Owens – Monticello, senior
Houck made it to the finals of the Mid Hudson and notched wins over Satriano and Bonner along the way.  Bonner finished 4th and Satriano 5th at the Mid Hudson but I’ve kept Satriano over Bonner because of his early season head to head over him.  Sountis made it to the finals of the Massapequa tournament and Owens has been solid all year.

138 lbs.
1. Louis Libutti – Monroe Woodbury, senior
2. Vinny Vetrano – Minisink Valley, junior
3. Robert Randall – NFA, senior
4. Kyle Ripa – Wallkill, senior
5. Mat Malherio – Highland, sophomore
In one of the most exciting matches of the year, Libutti defeated Vetrano in SV at the Section 9 Duals. Randall had a great Mid Hudson Tournament finishing in 2nd place and had a win over #5 Malherio, who finished 6th.  Ripa has been solid all year and took 4th in the Mid Hudson.  The landscape of 132, 138, and 145 could change if the Vetrano twins decide to drop down a weight…we shall see!

145 lbs.
1. William Harrison – Port Jervis, sophomore
2. Dominic Vetrano – Minisink Valley, junior
3. Tom Fini – Monroe Woodbury, senior
4. Shawn Burgos – Pine Bush, junior
5. Tyler Serafini – NFA, sophomore
Harrison grabs the top spot with a hard fought win over Vetrano at the Jim Wilson Duals.  Fini grabbed 3rd at the Massapequa tournament and Burgos has been very tough all year losing only one match to a kid from Section 1.  Serafini has had an excellent season thus far but has several other kids nipping at his heels for the #5 spot including Cornwall’s Gazzillo, Wallkill’s Pushman, and Onteora’s Chartrand.  Might we see Bobe from Washingtonville here in the very near future???

152 lbs.
1. Evan Barczak – Monroe Woodbury, senior
2. Brandon Bobe – Washingtonville, senior
3. Nijee Noble – Kingston, senior
4. Tristen Schiafo – Red Hook, junior
5. Dillon Ross – Onteora, junior
Barczak is nationally ranked by Flo at #20 and has committed to wrestle at D1 Drexel.  His only loss this year has been to a kid from Canada who recently placed 4th at the Beast of the East.  Bobe has been dominating his opponents!  He is undefeated with every win being either pin or tech fall.  Noble was very impressive in taking first at the Mid Hudson where he avenged a day 1 pool match loss to Schiafo be defeating him 3-1 in the day 2 finals.  Schiafo defeated Ross in the semis in OT.

160 lbs.
1. Ryan Ferro – Warwick, senior
2. Noah Curreri – Eldred/Liberty/Sullivan West, senior
3. Timmy Ganuncio – Minisink Valley, junior
4. Lucas Wightman – Warwick, senior
5. Zachary Beam, Valley Central, senior
Ferro was last year’s NYS champion at 152 and he’s been an absolute buzz saw this year!  Curreri has been a force as well having just taken 1st at the Windsor Christmas Tournament.  Ganuncio is 18-2 this year with no losses to Section 9 opponents and Wightman’s only S9 loss has been to Barczak.  Beam grabbed the #5 spot but there were several others in contention including Saugerties frosh Graham Knisell and Cornwall’s Thomas Cook.

170 lbs.
1. Mike Fekishazy – Wallkill, senior
2. Mark Ohanian – Valley Central, senior
3. Adonis Morano – Middletown, junior
4. Brian Mascaro – Wallkill, junior
5. Jason Butler – Port Jervis, junior
Fekishazy has been awesome this year notching wins over Evan Frank from Section 1 (3rd NYS D1) and James Hoeg of Section 11 (4th NYS D2) – both at 182!  Ironically, the only blemish on Fek’s record this season has been a loss at 170…it will be interesting to see where he goes in February!  Ohanian has been a beast. He’s undefeated and has scored bonus points in every match except a 9-6 win over #4 Mascaro.  Morano is having a great year as well and just placed 4th in a very tough weight at the Massapequa Tournament.  Butler’s only S9 loss has been to Morano and he recently picked up a win over Minisink’s Demetrius Moore who is another wrestler to watch here.

182 lbs.
1. Joey Yanis – Minisink Valley, junior
2. Ben Cuppett – New Paltz, senior
3. Maxx DeCapua – NFA, freshman
4. Kyle Strauss – Monroe Woodbury, senior
5. Will Leonard – Cornwall, sophomore
Yanis was a D1 sectional finalist at this weight last season and has been very good this year.  His only loss was in the finals of the Linn Crawn Tournament in Kittatinny, NJ. Cuppett is a 2X defending S9 D2 champ but has had very limited action this year so he’s at #2 for now.  DeCapua placed 3rd in the sections at 170 as an 8th grader last year and has been very tough this year. He took 4th at the Mid Hudson where Leonard took 5th with a win over the aforementioned Mascaro.

195 lbs.
1. Tom Kearns – Goshen, senior
2. Andrew Covais – Minisink Valley, senior
3. Alex Leonty – Washingtonville, senior
4. Henricus Van Heedstede Obelt, senior
5. Thomas Keller – Cornwall, senior
This was by far the most difficult weight class to rank.  Covais was a S9 D1 finalist at this weight last year and has been dominating the competition this year including a 1st place finish at Kittatinny.  He did recently lose to John Cassidy from Cornwall however so Covais slides to #2 behind Kearns who is undefeated and has a nice win over Oquendo from Middletown.  Cassidy and Oquendo didn’t crack the top 5 yet but are definitely wrestlers to watch. Leonty from Washingtonville has looked tough and only has one loss to a S9 opponent and that was at 220 to Port Jervis’ Scyler Phillips.  Leonty’s teammate VHO has only one loss (Covais) and has a pin over Cornwall’s Keller who sits at #5 after taking 4th at the Mid Hudson.  Wallkill’s Billy Kras finished 5th at the Mid Hudson and shouldn’t be overlooked.

220 lbs.
1. Ryan Ellefsen – Goshen, senior
2. Samson Perez – Monroe Woodbury, senior
3. Horace Duke – Middletown, senior
4. Scyler Phillips – Port Jervis, senior
5. James Ball – Saugerties, senior
Ellefsen was a state finalist last year and has committed to wrestle at D1 Clarion next year.  He has pinned every opponent this year.  We were hoping to see Duke vs Perez at Massapequa but Perez was ill and did not wrestle; Duke finished 4th.  We’ll keep it Perez #2 and Duke #3 for now but I have a feeling that match-up could go either way. Scyler Phillips is having a nice year with wins over Leonty and Ball and he also made it to the semis at the holiday tournament in Bethlehem Catholic, PA.  Ball dominated the competition at the Mid Hudson taking home the title by pinning his opponent from S11 Longwood in the finals!  John Goodall from Eldred/Liberty/Sullivan West is also having a great year and could definitely re-enter the top-5 soon while Minisink Valley’s Andrew Slagle’s only S9 losses have been to Perez, Duke, and Leonty and should also not be overlooked!

285 lbs.
1. Andrew Fenner – Minisink Valley, junior
2. Norris Gipson – Middletown, senior
3. Guy Soumah – New Paltz, senior
4. Austin Taylor – Warwick, senior
5. Will McCartney – NFA, senior
Fenner was a Section 9 D1 finalist at this weight last season and has been very impressive this year! He has not been beaten by a S9 wrestler and just pinned his way to the title at the Linn Crawn in Kittatinny, NJ.  Gipson’s only S9 loss has been to Fenner and he has wins over #3 Soumah and #4 Taylor.  Soumah’s only S9 loss has been to Gipson and posted a nice 7-2 win over McCartney earlier this season.  Taylor’s only local loss has been to Gipson and also has a win over MW’s Havison who is not ranked but definitely worth keeping an eye on!  The #5 spot was a toss-up between McCartney and Leser from Saugerties.  I gave McCartney the not based on a strong showing at the Mid Hudson where he took 2nd.  Leser had to injury default out of the Mid Hudson after a quarterfinal loss however he does have an early season win over McCartney and shouldn’t be overlooked.  Washingtonville’s Max Kissack, VC’s Bryce Moore, and Cornwall’s Owen Astigarraga are all also very solid heavyweights!

Rankings #7

S9sitelogoWell we are getting closer and closer to our state qualifying tournaments.  The Section 9 Division 1 Championships will take place on Friday and Saturday February 14th and 15th at Monroe Woodbury High School.  The Division 2 Championships will be held on Sunday February 16th at Bard College.  The NYS Championships will take place two weeks later on Friday 2/28 and Saturday 3/1 at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY.

There were not too many changes in our rankings for this week.  At 138 we slid Brian Bucci from Saugerties into the #4 slot.  Cornwall’s Dan Storer moves up to #2 at 145 after his  victory over Minisink Valley’s Frankie Hernandez.  Nick Wentland, also from Minisink Valley, has moved up to the #2 position at 160 after his impressive victory over Cornwall’s Quinn Zsido up a weight at 170!  Rondout Valley’s Eric Morse returns to the rankings at #4 at 160 after his victory over Middletown’s Christian Matos.  There are no other changes for this week’s rankings.

Section 9 has several wrestlers who are on the radar on the state level and have received either a ranking or a mention in New York Wrestling News’ combined D1&D2 individual ranking.  Click here for complete list and full article from NYWN website.

Rankings #6

S9sitelogoAlthough our top spots remained unchanged, Rankings #6 has several changes as wrestlers are moving around trying to get themselves into a position for the best possible outcome in this year’s Section 9 tournaments.

Our lowest weight class, 99 pounds, remained unchanged but Rondout Valley’s Ian Houck is right on the cusp of cracking the top 4.  Ian should fare well in the D2 tournament which is being held at Bard College this year.  It seems as though 113 may be the better weight for Middletown’s Pedro Rosales so we moved him to the #3 slot there behind Pine Bush’s Johnny Stramiello and Minisink’s Gerard Daly.  Daly beat Rosales 8-4 at the Gene Brigham Tournament this weekend.  Mike Feliciano from Highland re-enters the rankings at #2 at 106 filling in the slot opened by Rosales’ move with an impressive pin over #3  Jamie Pulver from Saugerties.

There were no changes from 120-145 however that doesn’t mean we won’t see any surprises in the next few weeks.  We noticed that Sean Foschini has weighed in at 126. Will NFA double enter at 126 or is someone bumping to 132?  Speaking of 132, Foschini’s teammate Da’mani Burns pinned Monroe Woodbury’s PJ Smoot at 132 in a dual this week!  While on the topic of double entries…what is Warwick going to do at 145?  They have three legitimate contenders at 145 in Thomas Wightman, AJ Aeberli, and Ryan Ferro.  Will we see two at 145 and one at 152 or vice versa?  In either case, who goes where? Minisink’s Frankie Hernandez had another great weekend winning the Gene Brigham Invitational.

The top 3 slots at 152 remain the same but it was brought to our attention that Middletown’s Johnny Grandson has a victory over Monroe’s Brandon Lewis this year so Grandson takes over at #4.  Grandson’s teammate Christian Matos enters the rankings at #4 at 160 where Minisink Valley’s Nick Wentland is our new #3.  It seems as though NFA’s Kyle McGuire may go back up to 182 so we have put him at #2 there and we slid Washingtonville’s Bruce McLee into the #4 slot at 170.  Kingston’s Jake Wood has made the cut to 182 and all of a sudden, 182 has become a very tough weight class!  We have MW’s Nick McShea at #1, McGuire at #2, Wood #3, and Washingtonville’s Bryan Beyers enters the rankings at #4.

There are still many questions remaining in our 3 upper weight classes.  Saugerties’ Robert Cuomo and Cornwall’s Erik Jessel have traded wins this year and they are at #1 and #2 respectively.  Defending Division 2 champion Dustin Mackenzie from Onteora sits at #3 while the #4 slot was extremely difficult to decide.  We have Middletown’s Juan Velazquez at #4 for this week based on his solid 3rd place finish at the Gene Brigham including an OT victory over MV’s Kyle Gainer.  Gainer has a wbf over Wallkill’s Garrett Betcher…Betcher has recently pinned Velazquez!  Maybe now that Kingston’s Wood has dropped to 182, his teammate Eliot Marzano will bump up and really muddy the waters at 195!

When Monroe Woodbury and Saugerties had a dual meet last week, we ranking “junkies” were hoping to get an answer to one of the most debated questions in Section 9 this year….Who is  #1 @ 220, Rob Kelly (MW) or James Bethel (Saug)?  I guess we are going to have to wait a few more weeks for our answer because Kelly was being rested and did not wrestle.  Bethel bumped up to 285 and pinned the 3rd ranked heavyweight Tyler Vervalin.  Isaac Serrano remains in the top spot at 285 while Washingtonville’s Sam Weinger holds the #2 spot.  Onteora’s Andrew Freidel has cracked the rankings and now sits at #4 at 285.
