With our Division 1 and Division 2 Section 9 Tournaments less than 2 weeks away, I have decided to squeeze in one final edition of rankings before our wrestlers can settle these arguments on the mat! As always, comments are welcomed below or at sectionixwrestling@gmail.com. Enjoy!
102 – Division 1

Since our last rankings, Satriano has teched Uhrig, pinned Judd, and majored Section 1 hammer Joseph Tornambe 10-2 in the finals of the Gene Brigham. Tornambe was undefeated going into the match. Merli picked up the title at the King Bison and holds strong at #2. Uhrig lost to Port’s Wylie at the Gene Brigham but then majored her in a dual a few days later. He also went 4-0 with 4 pins at the state duals and he remains our #3 in S9 D1. Futia picked up a head-to-head over Judd so he becomes our new #4 and Judd slides down to #5. Our #1 wrestler here Wylie has separated herself from the pack at 102 D2. As mentioned above she traded wins with Uhrig and she also picked up a nice win at the NYS Duals over Section 4’s Logan Bellis. We are going to keep Caserto at #2 but nipping at his heels is Trent Edwards from Chester who just placed 2nd at the Pearl River tournament.
110 – Division 1

110 – Division 2

Weeden and Boice wrestled twice since our last rankings. Boice topped Weeden in sudden victory at the MV vs VC dual meet, but Weeden pinned Boice at the Gene Brigham a week later so we will keep Weeden at #1 and Boice at #2. Hayes dropped a 5-1 decision to Boice at the Kohl but has been solid and remains #3 here followed by Grossi and Sullivan. Sullivan wrestled at 102 for the Gene Brigham so we have to keep our eye on where he lands for sections. Tufano suffered his first loss of the season up at state duals to Duncanson from Tioga but he’s definitely still #1 at 110 D2 in S9. We have a new #2 here though as Ewen Celestine from Red Hook notched a 13-10 win over previous #2 Nick Laskowki from Rondout Valley.
118 – Division 1

Macaluso hold the top spot here. She finished 2nd at the Kohl and picked up three wins at the NYS Duals including a pin over a former Section 4 champion. Greco has been unblemished all season other than his loss to Macaluso and he just notched a solid 8-5 win over our #3 wrestler at this weight, Futia from Wallkill. Javorsky placed 3rd at the Kohl and has looked good so he is staying at #4 followed by Perales who did suffer a loss to Denier from Saugerties but that was up at 126 so he doesn’t drop. Kirker stays at the top spot at 118 D2 but we have a new #2 here as Rondout Valley’s Lucas Ospina has dropped to 118. Kirker and Ospina wrestled a few weeks ago and Kirker came out on top 8-6 in sudden victory and Ospina also won the Mahopac tournament. Our former #2 here, Rebecca Brennan from New Paltz, is tough and will definitely be in the hunt for a title.
126 – Division 1

Since our last rankings Tresh has defeated Vidacovich twice and takes over the #1 spot at 126 D1. The MV freshman topped Vidacovich in OT during a dual meet and then pinned him for 3rd place at the Gene Brigham. MW’s Barczak has dropped to 126 so he is our new #3 here. Middletown’s Jayden Norris beat Saugerties’ Isaiah Hockx so Norris our new #4 and Hockx drops to #5. Petzold from Warwick, Mercado from NFA and Banta from Wallkill will definitely be in the hunt at this very deep weight. Gatto has suffered a few losses to some D1 kids, but he still seems to be the wrestler to beat at 126 D2 so he stays at #1 but we have a new #2 in Quintin Herzog from Liberty. Herzog takes over the #2 spot from Ospina who has dropped down to 118.
132 – Division 1

Marchese is still undefeated and is our clear #1 at 132 D1. The Washingtonville senior recently picked up career win #147 making him the winningest wrestler in school history. McKernan and Degon have wrestled twice since our last rankings. In the first bout Degon pinned McKernan but in the most recent match, McKernan defeated Degon. Tough call here but we’ll go with McKernan at #2 based on other quality wins including a 9-7 win over the top-ranked kid from Section 4 up at the state duals. Barczak dropped down to 126 so Accardo slides up a slot to #4 and Roger from Middletown cracks the board at #5. Segali from NFA will be in the medal hunt here and should not be overlooked. On the D2 side DeAveiro continues to look great and finished 3rd at Mahopac so he stays #1 but we have a new #2 in Demetrius Massey from Red Hook.
138 – Division 1

PJ Duke is back and it looks like he hasn’t missed a beat! The MV freshman teched 2020 S9 champ Ryan Ross up at 145 is his first match back and then went 4-0 with four first period pins up at the NYS Duals. Jordan Brown is looking great at #2 and just won the Mahopac Tournament with a 16-8 victory over D2 NYS placer Kieran Cullen in the finals. Jackson Brady lost a few matches up at the Phoenix Mid-Winter Classic but is still a solid #3 here followed by Tomblinson from Middletown who is putting together a nice year. Segali is now at 132 so Aaron Caoili from Cornwall cracks the rankings as our new #5! On the D2 side Zehr and Coiteux locked horns again and once again Zehr picked up the win by a 3-1 score. These two are on a crash course for a S9 D2 finals showdown!
145 – Division 1

Merli and Greiner are on a path to one of the most anticipated rematches of the year in the S9 finals. Merli won the first bout 8-6 in sudden victory. Since then both wrestlers are performing well. Merli only recent loss was by pin to the top kid from Section 2, Renzo Montalvo who is currently ranked #11 in NYS. Greiner’s only recent loss was a 9-3 decision to Angelo Centrone who is currently ranked #3 in the state. Gennaro continues to wrestle well and stays #3 with one of his wins coming via an OT pin over our #4 here, Theo Ballantine. Theo notched a solid 8-5 win over Thomas who remains #5 in our rankings. If “iron sharpens iron” Ryan Ross will be ready for the post season. Within the past few weeks Ross, who remains our #1 in S9 D2, has losses to Duke (#1 D1), Greiner (HM D1), Emsinger (HM D1), Smith (#3 D2), and Gillings (#4 D2). These losses will only make Ross a tougher wrestler. We have a new #2 here in Quinian Jones from Highland who is only a freshman but is getting better every week!
152 – Division 1

No changes in the top-5 in division 1 but there is plenty to report. Tigue has looked awesome! His most impressive result perhaps was up at NYS Duals where he lost a 7-5 decision to Ben Rogers from Wantagh. Tigue, who was beating Rogers for the majority of the match, got caught in a four point move in the third. Rogers is considered one of the favorites to contend for a state title in Albany and Tigue has proved that he also belongs in that conversation. Reed secured his place in the rankings at #2 by post bonus point victories over #3 Nilson, #4 Martini, and #5 Hockx. Nilson posted a major decision win over Martini. On the D2 side Cuppett has also been very impressive. On 1/15 he won the Highland Tournament and avenged his only loss of the season by pinning Corporan from Ketcham and on 1/30 he won the Mahopac Tournament. Evans from Ellenville continues to look good and he’s our #2 at 152 D2.
160 – Division 1

At the NYS Duals, MV’s Zack Ryder left no doubt that he is not only the top 160 in Section 9, but he is a heavy favorite to win another state title. In their dual versus Pittsford, Ryder posted an impressive 8-1 win over Nick Sanko, the #2 ranked wrestler in NYS! Ryder’s teammate Racz is putting together a great season! Since our last rankings, Racz is 11-1 with his only loss coming in the finals of the Gene Brigham…to Ryder. Manzi from NFA continues to win and is very solid as our #3. Manzi won the King Bison and beat the top ranked kid from Section 2 in the finals. Serafin has looked very good and stays at #4 but we have a new #5 in Wallkill’s Jai Barnett who recorded a pin over former #5 Mazzella from Warwick. Logan Smith is still our top dog at D1 160 and has looked very strong all year long while Hill from Onteora remains our #2 however has been wrestling up a 189 recently so we need to keep an eye on that.
172 – Division 1

Altomer, 19-0 with 16 pins since the Ironman in December, is the top ranked 172-pound wrestler in NYS and is our clear #1 here in Section 9. Zrelak from MW should not be overlooked. He is athletic and strong and just dominated the competition at the Mahopac Tournament. Zrelack also posted an 8-2 win over Gordon from Kingston who is #3 here. Gordon recently defeated former #4 Charles from Middletown 9-5. Charles suffered a few losses and drops to HM but shouldn’t be overlooked. Cavello from Cornwall moves up to #4 and has looked great while our new #5 is Johnny Accardo from Warwick who is improving every week. Chester’s Akil Williams pinned our former D2 #1 at 172 Wyatt Konjas so we have an all Chester 172 this week. DiCurcio slides up to #1 and Williams enters the rankings at #2.
189 – Division 1

MV’s Filip suffered his 1st loss of the season – a 6-4 sudden victory loss to Nick Smith from Pittsford who, like Filip, is considered one of the best 189-pounders in the state. Filip also defeated Winkler 8-2 in the Gene Brigham finals and remains our #1 here. Pennell will definitely push Filip. The PB junior lost 8-6 in the finals of Mahopac to Blanchard from Section 2. Filip narrowly defeated Blanchard 7-5 up at the Schenectady Tournament. Ponesse took 2nd at the Bison and will definitely contend here as will Winkler who is having a great year! Tibbs is also going to be in the hunt at 189. His only recent losses have been to #2 Pennell and to Calahan up at 215. On the D2 side, Figueroa has struggled recently however all of his losses have been to D1 kids or wrestlers from other sections, so he stays at #1 at 189 D2. Uriel Cazarez Quint stays at #2 but we really need to see where Hill from Onteora ends up going for sections!
215 – Division 1

Gallo is now the only undefeated wrestler on the MV team, and he has been mowing through the competition. He went 4-0 up at NYS Duals with four first period pins including a victory over Santowski from Section 5 who is considered one of the top wrestlers at 215 in the state. Callahan is very solid at #2. He won the Highland Tournament, and his only recent loss was at 285 to Valenzano from Cornwall. Callahan’s teammate, Justin McVey notched a win over Furst from Cornwall so he’s our new #3 followed by Furst and then DelBianco from Beacon. No changes at 215 in Division 2. Szymanski’s only recent loss was at 285 to D1 hammer Monchery while Oosterom’s only losses since our last ranking were to Gene Brigham finalists Gallo and Green from Section 11.
285 – Division 1

Stephan Monchery from Middletown is undefeated and he has pinned every opponent this season. Only two kids have made it out of the 1st period. He’s our clear #1 here. Siracusa made it to the finals of the Gene Brigham before
falling to the top-ranked D1 heavyweight in the state. He also lost in the finals of the Phoenix tournament to the top-ranked D2 wrestler in the state. Iron sharpens iron so Dom stays at #2. Our #3 is Valenzano from Cornwall is having a great season and should lock horns with Siracusa this week. Siracusa’s teammate Aiden DeEntremont pinned Gove at the Gene Brigham and takes over the #4 spot dropping Gove to #5. Gove is getting more mat time and is starting to show great improvement. He lost 8-6 in sudden victory to Bobby Foltz from Pittsford who is a state ranked wrestler. New Paltz junior Logan Ormond continues to impress and he remains #1 at D2 285 followed by our new #2 Alex Bollin from Rondout Valley who defeated previous #2 Daniels from Red Hook.
