Section 9 Duals D2 Preview; Red Hook takes on Onteora
In what promises to be a very competitive match, this year’s Division 2 Section 9 Duals final will be a showdown between #1 seed Red Hook and #2 seed, and defending champion, Onteora. The teams will meet at NFA on Wednesday, December 7th at 7:00 PM.
Although still a relatively young team with only three seniors on the roster, top-seeded Red Hook returns 21 wrestlers from last year’s team including 11 starters. The Raiders should be very solid in the middle of their lineup with Aaron Barkstrom, Matt Rauch, and Ricky Treu leading the way. All three wrestlers finished 2nd at last year’s D2 Sectional Championships. Declan Dwyer-McNulty (1st @ 96 in 2011) and Billy Harris (3rd @ 103 in 2011) should also have very good seasons for Red Hook.
Defending champions Onteora have their work cut out for them if they want to retain their crown as D2 champs. The Indians graduated 9 starters with over 540 career victories from last year’s team! Head Coach Lou Chartrand describes this year squad as “very raw” however he is hopeful they will be very competitive by season’s end. Onteora will be led by defending 103 lb. Section 9 champion Avery Leighton as well as Bernie Smith, Austin Weigel, Dustin Mackenzie, and Ryan Hickey.
Just to add a little extra drama to this showdown, first-year Red Hook Head Coach Nick Fredericks is a former Onteora wrestler. He wrestled for….you guessed it, Lou Chartrand. Who will prevail…the teacher or the student???
Van Buren 5th, Barber 6th at RIT Invitational
Behind the strength of two Section 9 grads, SUNY Oneonta finished 5th in the overall team standings at Saturday’s RIT Invitational. Freshman Donnie VanBuren (Onteora, 2011) finished 5th at 157, while Vinny Barber (Highland, 2010) took 6th at 285. Barber just returned to practice on Wednesday after missing 4 weeks with a knee injury. Great job both guys! Over 200 Attend Askren Clinic!!!
Thanks to the generosity of Forever Fierce, over 200 wrestlers, coaches, and parents were able to attend a free wrestling clinic on Friday at Middletown High School. Those in attendance were treated to outstanding instruction given by a special guest technician… 2X NCAA Champion and 2008 Olympian Ben Askren. Askren, a University of Missouri graduate, has successfully transitioned into MMA and is currently the Bellator Welterweight Champion. This event was a great way for wrestlers, coaches, parents, and fans to get AMPED up for the upcoming season! Thank you again to Forever Fierce for funding this very special event!

2X NCAA Champ Askren To Conduct FREE Clinic in Middletown
On November 28th (Black Friday) Forever Fierce is funding a FREE wrestling clinic to all Section 9 wrestlers and coaches! This clinic will feature guest technician Ben Askren. Askren is a 2X NCAA Champion, 4X NCAA finalist, 2008 Olympian, and the current Bellator Welterweight Champion (MMA). The clinic will take place from 10:00 – 2:00 at Middletown High School. McGrath 4th, Signorelli 5th @ Oneonta Tourney
Thanks in large part to SUNY Cortland’s Mike McGrath and Justin Signorelli, Section 9 was very well represented at 2011 Oneonta State Red Dragon Invitational on Saturday. McGrath, a junior and 2010 Kingston graduate, went 4-2 and took home 4th place honors at 184 lbs. 2009 Highland graduate Justin Signorelli, a team captain for SUNY Cortland, went 5-2 and placed 5th at 165 lbs. Great job both guys!!!
Also of local interest, Southern Maine finished 6th out of 11 in the team standings. Why is this of “of local interest”???? Southern Maine is coached by 1995 Middletown graduate Joe Pistone!

Franco Notches Win In Hofstra Victory Over Wisconsin
The Hofstra Pride won seven of the ten bouts enroute to recording a 25-12 victory over Wisconsin. The Hoftra (1-0) win was the first for new Head Wrestling Coach Rob Anspach. Wisconson dropped to 5-1 on the season.
One of the Pride’s victories came from 2009 Monroe Woodbury graduate Jamie Franco. Franco, a 133 lb. red-shirt sophomore, recored a 4-3 vicyory on an escape in the first tiebreaker. For the complete story and all individual results click on the link below.

November 14, 2011…the day is finally here! Today is the day for which so many of you have been waiting…today marks the first day of practice for the 2011 – 2012 wrestling season!
