Event Will Feature USA vs. Russia Freestyle Dual, 60KG Olympic Team Wrestle-Off, Exhibitions Matches and More!!!!

This Thursday, June 7th, at the Duffy Square section of Times Square in NYC, Beat the Streets will host their 2012 Gala – The Grapple in the Big Apple!  For the past few years, fans who attend this event walk away saying that it will be impossible for the BTS organizers to “top” what they just watched…..each year, they have been wrong!  This year’s event is no exception.

The 2012 Beat the Streets Gala will feature an exciting freestyle dual meet between the US and Russia, an Olympic team wrestle-off at 60kg, exhibition matches including one with 3X NCAA champion and NY native Kyle Dake, and an Awards and Reception Banquet at the famed Roseland Ballroom.

CADET CONNOLLY

Warwick senior Shane Connolly has recently learned that he has received appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.  Connolly is one of only four wrestlers to win five Section 9 titles; he plans on joining the Army Black Knights wrestling squad as a walk-on.  On behalf of the entire Section 9 wrestling community …. congratulations and good luck Shane!!! 

2012 NCAA Championships

PENN STATE DOMINATES!
With six All-Americans including three national champions, the Penn State Nittany Lions clinched the 2012 NCAA Wrestling Championships team title before the finals had even started.  Under the leadership of 3rd year head coach Cael Sanderson, the Nittany Lions have won the last two team titles.

Cornell’s 157-pound wrestler Kyle Dake (Lansing, NY – Section 4) becomes the first wrestler in NCAA history to win national titles in 3 different weight classes!

Franco, Stanley punch tickets to NCAAs!!!

Congratulations to Jamie Franco (Monroe Woodbury, 2009) and Derek Stanley (Saugerties, 2008) for earning automatic births to the 2012 NCCA Division 1 Wrestling Championships.  Franco, who wrestles at 133 for Hofstra, finished 2nd at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament on Saturday.  Stanley, who wrestles at 197 for Army, finished fifth in his conference tournament (EIWAs) to earn his pass to the NCAAs.  Stanley’ s teammate Coleman Gracey, only a freshman, has also qualified for the nationals by finishing 3rd at 165.  This year’s NCAA Championships are being held on March 15-17 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, MO. 

Also of local interest, Delaware Valley (PA) graduate Joe Kennedy, who wrestles at 197 for Lehigh, will be competing at the NCAA D1 tournament for the 3rd consecutive year.

Congratulations to all three wrestlers….Section 9 will be rooting hard for you!!!!

Zitone Undefeated Going Into NCAAs

 

2009 Port Jervis Graduate JD Zitone

JD Zitone (pictured on left in blue and white), captured his second consecutive Metropolitan Conference Championship this weekend for Centenary College.  JD will be competing in the NCAA National Championships in LaCrosse, Wisconsin on March 9th and 10th.   Zitone enters the tournament ranked 4th  in the nation (Division III).  He is currently undefeated at 25-0 on the season.  Check out http://www.centenarycollege.edu/cms/en/athletics/wrestling/ for more information on JD and the Cyclones.

NIEVES TO COACH 1st EVER EAST COAST / NEW ENGLAND WOMEN’S WRESTLING PROGRAM

Anibal Nieves: Ellenville graduate, NCAA All-American, 2X Olympian

This week’s edition of the Section 9 Wrestling Talk show will be be very special.  Yes we will, of course, spend a great deal of time discussing the up-coming Section 9 Wrestling Championships.  The show will also have a special guest who is about to start something very significant for the sport of wrestling…specifically women’s wrestling. 

Ellenville graduate Anibal Nieves has received approval to launch the first ever women’s college wrestling program in New England.  Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield, MA will have a women college freestyle wrestling team. They will be a part of the Woman College Wrestling Association (WCWA). STCC will be the first college in the Northeast & New England to have a women’s college team. Derek Stanley Wins 197; Army 4th at All-Academy

Congratulations to Saugerties graduate Derek Stanley for winning the 197 pound title at the All-Academy Championships held in Colorado Springs on Sunday.  Derek finished 3-0 including a victory by pin over Tyler Russell from Merchant Marine Academy.  Teammate Cole Gracey also won an individual title at 165.  As a team, Army came in forth of eight teams finishing behind Navy, Air Force, and the Citadel.  Click below for complete article including full results from the Army Wrestling website.
