  1. Mike,
Sorry I missed your interview. Thanks for sharing. As a mother of a girl wrestling in Section IX it is nice to know that girls do have a place in the sport of wrestling. Wish more girls would compete in the sport. The practices are great and keeps them in top physical condition. She always takes practices seriously and really wants to learn. The Minisink Wrestling family has always treated her as an athlete and that speaks volumes. This year another girl a year older has also joined the program and is tough as nails. Same weight class as well. Last year Sofia went all the way to the Kids Section finals only losing by a few points. Let’s see what this Sunday brings for both of them. I would love to see them standing on the podium together. Regardless, both of them always have fun just wrestling.
    Thx for the great article.

    1. In 2013, MA will become the first state in the US to have high school girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport. They will wrestle freestyle not folkstyle. Women’s freestyle wrestling has been an Olympic sport since 2004 in Athens (appropriately enough). Hopefully other states will follow MA’s lead so this great sport can grow in popularity in the US the way it has been spreading around the rest of the world!!!
