Section 9 Individual Rankings – 2/2/2018

Section 9 Wrestling
Individual Rankings – Combined D1/D2
February 2, 2018

This will be the last set of rankings prior to the Section 9 Championships which are one week away!!!! These are often the most difficult rankings to do because there are wrestlers who have improved tremendously throughout the course of the season….they are notching impressive wins now, yet may have had a few losses to non-ranked wrestlers only a few months ago!  Well here we go!  As always, respectful comments and suggestions are always welcomed and appreciated. Contact me at sectionixwrestling@gmail.com. Enjoy!

99 Pounds
1. Justin Morales – Middletown, sophomore
2. Nikko Walsh – Rondout Valley, freshman
3. Christian Prokosch – Cornwall, senior
4. Joey Curerri – Eldred, freshman
5. Andrew Marchese – Washingtonville, 8th grade
6. Andrew Filip – Minisink Valley, 7th grade

There are some new names on the board at what is now becoming a very deep 99 pound weight class!  The Top 3 remain the same in Morales, Walsh, and Prokosch – all three are continuing to have great seasons!  Here’s where things start to get interesting…Marchese who was at #4 just lost to Eldred’s Joey Curreri by a score of 3-2 so we’ll make Curreri the new #4 dropping Marchese to #5. Our previous #5 Hewitt from MV lost a head-to-head to his teammate Andrew Filip so Filip is now our #6.  This weigh is very deep though. Hewitt who is no longer rankedgave #1 Morales all he could handle at the Gene Brigham losing 8-5 and also took #5 Marchese to sudden victory before losing 5-3.  Throw in wrestlers like Matt Davis from Wallkill, Austin Maddox from Washingtonville, and Casey Lennon from VC and we have a very solid 99 pound weight class!

106 Pounds
1. Greg Fischer – NFA, senior
2. Nick Picariello – Minisink Valley, sophomore
3. Jacob Chenier – Kingston, sophomore
4. Drew Greco – Warwick, freshman
5. Matt Morris – Red Hook, sophomore
6. Joe Habert – Minisink Valley, junior

One through five stay exactly the same although I was tempted to move Morris up a spot or two because he has looked extremely sharp recently. Former #6 Tierney lost to Pereira from Rondout Valley who was beaten by Habert from Minisink Valley so he, Habert, is our new #6!

113 Pounds
1. Dylan Earl – Monroe Woodbury, senior
2. Jordan Suarez – Minisink Valley, sophomore
3. Eric Tigue – Port Jervis, 8th grade
4. Ryan Burgos – Monroe Woodbury, junior
5. Hunter Brown – Warwick, senior
6. Derek Ellison – Wallkill, junior

We will keep the top two the same but we’ll shake up 113 from #3 down!  Previous #5 Tigue is on fire! He picked off Brown from Warwick in a dual  then notched an impressive 5-3 win over NYS finalist Jon Charles at the NYSPHSAA Dual Meet Championships in Syracuse. We’ll bring him all the way up to #3 and slide Burgos and Brown down one slot and Ellison remains at #6. 113 will be great to watch at the D1 Sections and Tigue is opening some eyes at the state level in D2!

120 Pounds
1. Marco Vespa – Monroe Woodbury, junior
2. Brandon DeLaRosa – Newburgh Free Academy, junior
3. Ethan Palanca – New Paltz, freshman
4. Bryan MacDougall – Warwick, senior
5. Joey Amato – Port Jervis, sophomore
6. Patrick Ross – Onteora, freshman

The only change at 120 is Warwick’s MacDougall enters the rankings via his win over Amato.  This will be another interesting weight to watch at both the D1 and D2 tournament.  Vespa is certainly the favorite but you can’t count out DeLaRosa who continues to improve and may be hitting his stride at the right time. Palanca, Amato and Ross could be awesome to watch on the D2 side!

126 Pounds
1. James Faison – Wallkill, sophomore
2. Sean Savacool – Minisink Valley, sophomore
3. Tom Maddox – Washingtonville, junior
4. Matthew Romano – Valley Central, sophomore
5. Luke Fischer – Newburgh Free Academy, sophomore
6. Nick Ross – Onteora, freshman

The D1 132 pound weight class will be a lot of fun to watch! Savacool, who suffered a 1 point loss to Fischer back in mid-December, has been on fire recently.  He pinned former #2 Maddox in a dual and also recorded a gritty 1-0 win over Wantagh’s Christian Encarnacion up in Syracuse.  Savacool is our new #2 behind Faison who returned to action this week!.  Maddox, Romano, Fischer, and Nick Ross round out the top 6.

132 Pounds
1. Connor Greiner – Minisink Valley, senior
2. Tommy Askey – Pine Bush, sophomore
3. Carson Sauschuck – Port Jervis, senior
4. Max Wernicki – Monroe Woodbury, sophomore
5. Hunter Phillips – Valley Central, junior
6. Trevor Faveron – Onteora, senior

There are no changes at 132 but definitely a few noteworthy matches to mention!  Greiner continues to look great and he was very impressive up in Syracuse where he pushed defending NYS champ Justin Vines from Wantagh to the limit before dropping a 5-3 decision.  Askey has also looked great since his return to action! This past weekend he avenged an earlier loss to Kyle Sams of Putnam Valley in the finals of the Caruso Tournament. Askey was selected MOW!

138 Pounds
1. Dom Vetrano – Minisink Valley, senior
2. Joe McGinty – Monroe Woodbury, sophomore
3. Frank Fea – Goshen, senior
4. Dylan Greer – Pine Bush, senior
5. Nate Ross – Onteora, sophomore
6. Nick Curreri – Eldred, junior

Nick Curreri notched a 7-0 win over Malherio and he’s or new #6 at 138.  Everything else stays the same for now.  Vetrano has been on fire since ESC… he’s 9-0 with 8 pins (6 of them in the 1st period) and 1 tech fall! McGinty has finished 2nd at both the Kohl and Ridgefield tournaments with both losses coming to quality opponents.

145 Pounds
1. Steve Gazzillo – Cornwall, junior
2. Ian Houck – Rondout Valley, senior
3. Vinny Vetrano – Minisink Valley, senior
4. Carter Stewart – Monroe Woodbury, senior
5. Nick Florin – Pine Bush, junior
6. Zach Chartrand – Onteora, senior

Gazillo hasn’t lost since our last rankings and remains #1 but we have a new #2 as Houck edged Vetrano in the finals of the Gene Brigham. Vetrano beat Houck earlier at ESC but we’ll give weight to the most recent victory. Stewart took 3rd at the Ridgefield tournament and posted a nice win over Albornoz from MV in a dual. Florin and Chartrand are both looking very solid and remain at #5 and #6.

152 Pounds
1. Tyler Serafini – Newburgh Free Academy, junior
2. William Harrison – Port Jervis, junior
3. Joe Pushman – Wallkill, senior
4. Joe Velazquez – Middletown, sophomore
5. Nick Albornoz – Minisink Valley, sophomore
6. Ray Napolitano – Valley Central, senior

Serafini still the top dog at 152 in S9…he’s having a great season! Harrison is in great shape for taking the D2 crown and sits at #2. Pushman, Velazquez, and Albornoz remain in the same order as last ranking bur we have a new #6 in Valley Central senior Ray Napolitano!

160 Pounds
1. Shaun Burgos – Pine Bush, senior
2. Tristen Schiafo – Red Hook, senior
3. Griffin Roddy – Port Jervis, senior
4. Destin Morano – Middletown, junior
5. Jace Hirsch – Minisink Valley, freshman
6. Matt Schuyler – Cornwall, senior

Burgos has been on a roll and has clearly separated himself as the favorite at 160 in S9 D1. Knisell was dropped because his only weigh ins at 160 were at ESC and Satriano had season ending surgery.  Schiafo is going 160 and is our new #2 here. Schuyler from Cornwall enters the rankings at #6 160 this week.

170 Pounds
1. Dillon Ross – Onteora, senior
2. Brian Mascaro – Wallkill, senior
3. Timmy Ganuncio – Minisink Valley, senior
4. Jason Butler – Port Jervis, senior
5. Matt Bucci – Saugerties, junior
6. Collin Cummings – Valley Central, senior

Ross notches another win over Butler and is still the clear #1 at 1 in S9. Big change in #2 as Wallkill’s Brian Mascaro recorded a win over MV’s Timmy Ganuncio to take over the second spot. Ganuncio is now at #3 and is certainly hoping for a rematch at the S9 tournament. Butler, Bucci, and Cummings round out the top 6!

182 Pounds
1. Joe Yanis – Minisink Valley, senior
2. Andrew Wierzbicki – Warwick, senior
3. Chris Tremper – Pine Bush, senior
4. Luke Wojehowski – Cornwall, junior
5. Thomas Moriarty – Washingtonville, junior
6. Alex Miller – Newburgh Free Academy, senior

Yanis has looked awesome and is definitely #1 at 182 in our Section. Owen’s only weigh ins at 182 were ESC so we move him up to 195 and Wierzbicki from Warwick drops down to 182 so we have several changes at #2-6.  With a couple of nice wins over Aumick and Wojehowski, Wierzbicki enters 182 at #2. Tremper is having a great season and is at #3 while Wojehowski slots in at #4. Washingtonville junior Moriarty enters the rankings at #5 and NFA’s Alex Miller is our #6.

195 Pounds
1. Maxx DeCapua – Newburgh Free Academy, sophomore
2. Julius Oquendo – Middletown, senior
3. Anton Juncaj – Minisink Valley, junior
4. Raven Aumick – Port Jervis, senior
5. Ryan Hobson – Red Hook, senior
6. Anthony Owen – Saugerties, junior

Decapua is still are #1 at 195 but  think the weight class will be very exciting in both D1 and D2. Oquendo is always dangerous and Juncaj continues to improve. Aumick and Hobson have already battled to a close decision once and Hobson has a win over a very athletic Owen. Crisfield from VC wrestled here the other day and had a nice win over a very tough Keller from Cornwall….will he throw his hat into the ring?

220 Pounds
1. Will Leonard – Cornwall, junior
2. David Strauss- Monroe Woodbury, junior
3. Mark Crisfield – Valley Central. junior
4. Adam Fenner – Minisink Valley, freshman
5. Daniel Banegas – NFA, senior
6. Harrison Parelli – Warwick, senior

No major changes here but definitely some interesting happenings!  Leonard stays #1 and his having a great year!  Strauss lost by injury default to Fenner but the Crusader was down 5-0 at the time of the injury.  We will keep them as is for now but there is a chance, unfortunately, that we will not see Strauss in action for the remainder of the year. Crisfied did wrestle a match at 195 so it will be interesting to see what he decides for the post season. Fenner looked great against Strauss and the MV freshman continues to improve! Banegas stays at #5 but our new #6 is Warwick’s Harrison Parelli who is back from injury.

285 Pounds
1. Preston Havison – Monroe Woodbury, junior
2. Andrew Fenner – Minisink Valley, senior
3. Liam Dietrich – Red Hook, sophomore
4. Bryce Moore – Valley Central, junior
5. Caleb Williams – Newburgh Free Academy, junior
6. Max Kissack – Washingtonville, senior

Shake-up at the top for heavyweights as Preston Havison takes over the top spot after pinning Andrew Fenner in their dual on Wednesday. Fenner, who was up 2-1 at the time of the fall, defeated Havison in UTB in the S9 Duals finals.  Could we see the rubber match in the S9 finals on Saturday? Fenner drops down to #2 and Dietrich is now at #3. Moore in Williams are close but stay the same for now and Washingtonville’s Max Kissack returns to the lineup and enters the rankings at #6 here!

Weekend Results including Dual Meet Championships

Minisink and Port Jervis at the NYSPHSAA Dual Meet Championships
It was a historic weekend for NYS wrestling as we saw our first ever sanctioned dual meet championship tournament take place in Syracuse.  Section 9 was very well represented in both D1 and D2.  Minisink Valley won the Section 9 Duals  a few weeks ago and they had an outstanding tournament in Syracuse finishing in 2nd place to Lond Island’s Wantagh by a score of 37-28.  The Warriors dominated Lancaster and Horsehaeds in pools matches before defeating Rocky Point 47-26 in the semifinals. Port Jervis also represented S9 well!  The Red Raiders went 1-1 in their pool with their win coming over one of the top D2 teams in NYS, Central Valley Academy from Section 3. Port lost to Tiaga who had previously lost to Central Valley Academy causing all 3 teams to finish 1-1 in the pool.  Toaga advanced to the semis out of the pool due to tie-breaking criteria – most points scored.  Great job both squads!  Click below for all of the results from the tournament!

Section 9 Rankings – 1/16/18

Section 9 Wrestling

Individual Rankings – Combined D1/D2
January 16, 2018

Here are our first rankings after the Eastern States Classic!  At this point we have a pretty good idea about which weight everyone is going.  There will inevitably be some changes towards the end of the year as wrestlers and coaches put themselves in the best position position to win a Section 9 title and a trip to the NYS tournament in Albany on 2/23 & 2/24!  Here we go!!!  As always, respectful comments and suggestions are always welcomed and appreciated at sectionixwrestling@gmail.com. Enjoy!

99 Pounds
1. Justin Morales – Middletown, sophomore
2. Nikko Walsh – Rondout Valley, freshman
3. Christian Prokosch – Cornwall, senior
4. Andrew Marchese – Washingtonville, 8th grade
5. Evan Hewitt – Minisink Valley, freshman
6. Matt Davis – Wallkill, freshman

Morales drops to 99 and makes a statement by placing 8th at the ESC including a 6-2 win over previous #1 Walsh who also had a good tournament and was one win away from placing.  Prokosch, Marchese, Hewitt, and Davis all remain in the same order as last ranking and round out 3-6.  There is some others to keep an eye on here specifically Casey Lennon from VC, Richard Toledo from MW, Grant Barczak from MW, and Joey Curreri from Eldred/Liberty/Sullivan West.

106 Pounds
1. Greg Fischer – NFA, senior
2. Nick Picariello – Minisink Valley, sophomore
3. Jacob Chenier – Kingston, sophomore
4. Drew Greco – Warwick, freshman
5. Matt Morris – Red Hook, sophomore
6. Dylan Tierney – Goshen, junior

Fischer bounced back from an 11-0 loss to Suarez (@ 113) at the Section 9 Duals by having an awesome ESC placing 6th in an absolutely loaded field! The 2017 state qualifier recorded a pin over Len Balducci, a 5th place finisher at last year’s NYS tournament. Picariello also had a nice ESC making it to Day 2 and he was also a finalist at the Chris Hernandez Tournament so he stays #2. Chenier, Greco, and Morris stay in the same order and Goshen junior Dylan Tierney enters the rankings at #6!

113 Pounds
1. Dylan Earl – Monroe Woodbury, senior
2. Jordan Suarez – Minisink Valley, sophomore
3. Ryan Burgos – Monroe Woodbury, junior
4. Hunter Brown – Warwick, senior
5. Eric Tigue – Port Jervis, 8th grade
6. Derek Ellison – Wallkill, junior

Earl maintains the #1 spot at 113 with a head-to-head over Suarez in the S9 Duals finals.  No reason to change anyone else here. Suarez had an impressive 11-0 win over Fisher (#1 @ 106) . Tigue did wrestle at 106 for the ESC but it’s a +4 tournament but we’ll definitely keep an eye on his future weigh-ins!

120 Pounds
1. Marco Vespa – Monroe Woodbury, junior
2. Brandon DeLaRosa – Newburgh Free Academy, junior
3. Ethan Palanca – New Paltz, freshman
