Updated Individual Rankings – Final Rankings Before the “+2” Growth Allowance

As our wrestlers anxiously wait for their favorite Christmas present of the year, a 2-pound growth allowance, I have decided to squeeze in one more set of updated individual rankings. This will also be the last rankings which combines our D1 and D2 wrestlers! After the holiday tournaments next week, we will separate our large school and small school wrestlers into separate rankings. For these rankings I will also not include any wrestlers who have yet to wrestle a match this year.

102 Pounds
1. Cooper Merli (Newburgh Free Academy, 9th)
2. Charlie Wylie (Port Jervis, 9th)
3. William Soto (Newburgh Free Academy, 8th)
4. Marco Futia (Wallkill, 9th)
5. Elijah Brown (Monroe Woodbury, 7th)
The 102 pound weight class is very deep this year! The big mover here is NFA’s William Soto who moves from #5 to #3! Soto did not defeat Futia or Brown however he did have a very impressive win over Fulton senior Freddie Pagan who is a 2X Section 3 champ who made it all the way to the blood round at the state tournament last year! And Soto didn’t just beat him, he teched him 16-1! Soto’s teammate Merli went 2-2 at the very tough Beast of the East and is still #1 here and Wylie from Port won the Cuneen Doane and stays at #2. Wallkill’s Futia’s only loss has been to Wylie so he stays at #4 with MW’s Brown right behind him at #5! VC’s Ed Vass has opened some eyes this past week with his 15-0 tech over Simpson from MV. Others to watch here are Sullivan from MW, Simpson from MV, and Chrisjohn from Saugerties.

Saugerties senior Gavin Ingrassia breaks into the rankings at #4 at 110 with his first period pin over Port Jervis junior O’Lena who drops to the #5 slot. O’Lena has a head-to-head over Venarchick so the Cornwall freshman falls out of the top-5 for now. Venarchick actually had a great tournament at the Jim Wilson Duals on Saturday. He went 4-0 with four pins and earned the aggregate pin award – not bad for a kid who just started wrestling about a month ago! Warwick’s Brady Judd stays at #1. He has looked great and picked up a win over a very solid Jordan Busby from NFA up at 118. Washingtonville’s Gennaro continues to impress and stays at #2 while McCarthy from Wallkill continues to roll along and stays at #3!

The only change at 118 this week is Monroe Woodbury’s Piazza and Minisink Valley’s Boice flip-flop because Piazza topped Boice 6-5 at the MV vs MW dual meet. Valley Central’s Satriano notched an 11-0 major over Boice and continues to dominate and stays in the top spot! FDR’s Dakin has been idle but is having a solid year and remains at #4 followed by Wallkill’s Grossi at #5. A few others to watch for here are Busby from NFA and Tittleback from Saugerties!

126 Pounds

5. Liam Hayes (Monroe Woodbury, 9th)
No changes in the top-3 at 126 but MV’s JoJo Uhrig topped MW’s Liam Hayes 8-5 in a very exciting match at the MV vs MW dual meet so Uhrig is now #4 and Hayes is at #5. Returning S9 champ Weeden from VC holds on to the top spot but he was tested by MV’s Nate Racz whom he narrowly defeated 5-4 during the MV vs VC dual. We should definitely keep an eye on Racz. Futia and Mercado are solid at #2 and #3 here. Other wrestlers to keep our eyes on at 132 are Maxim Javorsky from Monroe, Jacob Perales from Goshen, and Kevin Rourke from Cornwall!

Middletown freshman Daniel Aviles enters the rankings at 132 at #5 this week. He has an excellent 13-4 record and has notched a win by pinfall over a very tough Javorsky from Monroe Woodbury. Javorsky pinned Aviles earlier this season. Tresh keeps rolling at remains our top wrestler here as his only losses were at Ironman. Tresch is followed by D2 hammer Kirker from Red Hook who is a solid #2. Warwick’s Petzold stays #3 followed by Banda from Wallkill at #4. Cornwall’s Marco Giumarra and Goshen’s Michael Lombardi are having very good seasons and should not be overlooked here!

138 Pounds
1. Alex Greco (Warwick, 12th)
2. Zak McKernan (Minisink Valley, 12th)
3. Jayden Norris (Middletown, 12th)
4. Demetrius Massey (Red Hook, 12th)

Two-time Section 9 champ Greco remains our #1 but MV’s McKernan is looking great and is a very formidable #2 at 138. McKernan had a very impressive 11-4 win at the Jim Wilson Duals over a very highly regarded Luke Nieto from Plainedge. VC’s Degon has yet to wrestle so we drop him for now which slides Middletown’s Norris up to #3 and Red Hook’s Massey up to #4. Taking over our #5 spot at 138 is Saugerties senior Vance Dyke who is having a great season including a win over Beacon’s Jude Betancourt who should not be overlooked!

145 Pounds

Our top two ranked wrestlers locked horns at the MW vs MV dual, and it was MW senior Jordan Brown coming away with the 5-2 decision over MV’s Luke Greiner, so they remain #1 and #2 respectively. Coiteux from New Paltz is looking tough and he stays at #3 followed by Goshen senior Brady who is 12-1 on the season thus far. By virtue of his win over Marlboro’s Reese Greathouse, our new #5 at 145 is MV freshman Zachary Filip. Filip has yet to lose this season and is improving every match! Greathouse shouldn’t be overlooked and could wind up seeing Coiteux in the D2 S9 finals this year!

152 Pounds

Minisink Valley’s PJ Duke is the clear #1 here…he likely #1 in the nation at this weight! But Duke is injured so we will pull him from the rankings for now making New Paltz senior Cole Cuppett our new #1 at 152. Carcaterra from MW is our new #2 by virtue of his first period pin over Holmes from Minisink who slides down to #4. NFA senior Segali is having a great year including a win of Accardo from Warwick, so we have Segali at #3 and have Accardo as HM. Washingtonville’s Ibrahim Aljamal is undefeated and is now at 152 so we have him at #5 here. Wallkill’s Thomas is at HM and could definitely find himself back in the top 5. This will be a great weight class to follow in February. Let’s not forget about Chester’s Michael Franco or Carcaterra’s teammate Rosenblum …both are very solid!

160 Pounds

Reed just looks better and better every week! Don’t be surprised if we see him very high on the podium in Albany in February. Ross has yet to wrestle this season, so we’ll drop him from the ranking for now making Marco Martini from Wallkill our new #2. MV junior Quinten Morgan has looked very tough at 160 and he’s our new #3 followed by Saugerties Senior Hockx who sits at #4. The final spot at 160 was pretty wide open but we’ll give it to MW junior Isaiah Grant who is having a very solid season for the Crusaders. Frankie Shaw from Burke, Jonathan Melitski from Red Hook, and Brody Timm from Beacon are all having good years and will definitely be in the hunt this year!

MV’s Filip, who finished 4th in NYS at 189 last year, makes the cut to 172 and is our new #1 here. Cavallo is having a great year and is at #2 right ahead of NFA’s Ponesse who is at #3 and Washingtonville’s Serafin who is at #4. Filip’s teammate Michael Loundsbury is our #5 here but right behind him is Chester’s Marcus Colon who will be a force to reckon with at this year’s D2 tournament! Another wrestler to watch here is MW’s Nick Hansen.

189 Pounds

With Ryder still out with an injury and Filip down at 172, Pine Bush senior Brayden Pennell is our new #1 at 189. Pennell was a state qualifier at this weight last year and definitely has the potential to get to the medal stand in Albany this year. Fellow state qualifier Tibbs from Middletown is having a great year and sits at #2 followed Scott from Cornwall who sits at #3. Kingston’s Nick York hit the mat for the first time this year and enters our rankings at #4 followed by MW senior Eryk Shammgod. We need to keep an eye on Jai Barnett from Wallkill who just handed Goshen’s Kyle Kubik his first loss of the season. Both are having great seasons thus far as is Chris Leggett from NFA and Matt Krauza from Our Lady of Lourdes.

Defending state champion Ethan Gallo from Minisink Valley is the clear top dog here at 215! Gallo’s only losses have been at Ironman to nationally ranked wrestlers. Gallo placed 5th at the Ironman. State placer Oosterom has looked great and just recorded a pin over Batista. He is very solid at #2 followed by Cornwall senior Furst who is at #3. State qualifier Batista from Our Lady of Lourdes is having a great year and he’s at #4 followed by Calloway from Beacon who is undefeated with every win being either a pin or a forfeit!

285 Pounds
1. Stephan Monchery (Middletown, 11th)
2. Rahmiere Bradley (Middletown, 11th)
3. Logan Ormond (New Paltz, 12th)
4. Aiden DeEntremont (Goshen, 12th)
5. Aiden Gove (Minisink Valley, 12th)
Monchery won the title at the Thomas Chickanis Memorial with a pin in the finals over Hotaling from Colonie who is the top ranked heavyweight in S2 D1. Monchery’s teammate Bradley, a 2022 state qualifier, finished 3rd at the Chackanis with his only loss coming to Hotaling. He is our #2 at 285 followed by New Paltz senior Logan Ormond who is looking great this year. Goshen’s Aiden DeEntremont is undefeated this year and is a strong #4 followed by Aiden Gove from MV whose only two losses this year are to a defending state champ from Section 2 and a 2-1 loss to the top ranked heavyweight in Nassau County!
