Week 4 – Holiday Tournaments

Wrestlers have now received their much appreciated 2-pound growth allowance and it’s time to get serious! This week we have several holiday tournaments and before you know it, we’ll be talking Eastern States Classic! As a scheduling note, this year’s Eastern States Classic is Friday and Saturday 1/13 and 1/14 at SUNY Sullivan. Much more to follow about that in a future post! For now, let’s look at this week’s schedule and results with the major focus being on the Mid-Hudson Tournament! The Mid-Hudson is the longest running high school wrestling tournament in NYS!

Day 1 Recap – Section 9 Wrestlers Advancing to Day 2
102: Merli (NFA), Soto (NFA), and Vass (VC) all advance to Day 2 and all three are on the top half of the bracket. Merli and Vass will wrestle in quarters. Vass had an impressive 13-4 major over Futia (Wallkill) in pools.

110: Satriano (VC) and Busby (NFA) advance to Day 2 and are on opposite sides of the bracket. A Satriano vs Shabazz (Xavier) semi could be the best match at this weight class!

118: R. Futia (Wallkill), Giumarra (Cornwall), and Celestine (Red Hook) all make it to Day 2. All three are on the bottom half of the bracket with Futia and Celestine meeting in the quarters.

126: Mercado (NFA), Kirker (Red Hook), and Banda (Wallkill) all advance to Day 2. Mercado had an impressive tf over Kirker in pools.

132: Shane Cranna (Red Hook) advances to Day 2.

138: Massey (Red Hook) and Caoili (Cornwall) advance to Day 2 and are on opposite sides of the bracket.

145: Reece Greathouse (Marlboro) and Kevin Segali (NFA) both advance to Day 2 and they will meet in the quarters.

152: Matt Rizzo (Wallkill) and Patrick Cosgrove (Cornwall) advance to Day 2 and are on opposite sides of the bracket.

160: Tyler Reed (Cornwall) and Hunter Hecht (NFA) both advance to Day 2.

172: Cavallo (Cornwall), Ponesse (NFA), Annacone (Wallkill), and Bilyou (FDR-Hyde Park) all make it to Day 2 and all four are on the bottom half of the bracket!

189: Chris Leggett (NFA), Liam Scott (Cornwall), Matt Krauza (Our Lady of Lourdes), and Chris Herriman (FDR-Hyde Park) all make it to Day 2!

215: Gavin Furst (Cornwall) and Devin Iturralde (NFA), and Danny Fratz (Highland) all make it to Day 2.

285: Luke Daniels (Red Hook) and Mark Paschal (Red Hook) both advance to Day 2!

Tuesday December 27, 2022

Michael O’Connell Tournament @ Pearl River (Section 1)
New Paltz had three finalists and a total of four wrestlers place in the top at the Michael O’Connell Tournament in Pearl River. Placing 2nd for New Paltz were Justin Coiteux (145), Cole Cuppett (152), and Logan Ormond (285). Placing 3rd at 285 for New Paltz was Tomasz Zaborowski. Minisink Valley sent a few wrestlers to the O’Connell and had two place winners in Stetson Terpak (3rd @ 110) and Nate Racz (4th @ 126).

Wednesday December 28, 2022

Linn Crawn Memorial @ Kittatinny, NJ
Minisink Valley sent 8 to the finals, crowned 5 champions, and absolutely dominated the competition at the Linn Crawn Memorial Tournament in Kittatinny, NJ! Taking home titles for the Warriors were Wyatt Boice (118), Zachary McKernan (138), Luke Greiner (144), Andrew Filip (175), and Ethan Gallo (215). The three other MV finalists were JoJo Uhrig (126), Anthony Tresch (132), and Michael Loundsbury (190). The Warriors won the team title with 252 points far outpacing second place finisher Kittatinny who finished the tournament with 173 points!

Massapequa Holiday Tournament @ Massapequa HS (Section 8)
Monroe Woodbury had the following wrestlers place at the Massapequa Holiday Tournament:
102: Elijah Brown – 4th, Kelly Sullivan – 6th
126: Maxim Javorsky – CHAMPION, Liam Hayes – 3rd
138: Jordan Brown – CHAMPION and MOW!!!
145: Michael Rosenblum – 5th, Marcus Charlot – 6th

Friday December 30, 2022

Cooperstown Invitational @ Cooperstown HS (Section 3)
Middletown crowned three champions and won the team title at the Cooperstown Invitational. Taking home titles for Middletown were Erik Martin Jr. (126), Bryson Tibbs (189), and Stephan Monchery (285). Jayden Norris (138) placed 2nd while Miguel Nieves (110) and Jacob Roger (132) took 3rd for the Middies. Goshen took 3rd in the team race and had five wrestlers place in the top 3. Taking 2nd place for the Gladiators were Jacob Perales (126), Dan Weeden (160), and Aiden DeEntremont (285). Earning bronze for Goshen were Jackson Brady (145) and Dante Joseph (215).
