The 2011 – 2012 wrestling campaign officially begins this weekend as many of our Section 9 teams will participate in some very competitive early season tournaments. Defending Section 9 champions Warwick and NFA will both travel to Long Island to take on some stiff competition at the MacArthur Tournament and Herricks Tournament, respectively. Monroe Woodbury will head down to Section 1 to compete at the Tony Carlucci Tournament held at SUNY Purchase while Monticello’s bus will head in the opposite direction and journey up to Section 2 for the Voorheeseville Tournament.
The largest contingent of local teams, however, will be found at the Kingston Tiger Duals where Middletown, Pine Bush, Wallkill, Washingtonville, Saugerties, Onteora, Red Hook, Valley Central, and, of course, Kingston will kick-off their seasons. Good luck to all of our Section 9 teams! Results will be posted as soon as we get them! To view a schedule for all of the action of the coming week, click on the link below!

Thanks to the generosity of Forever Fierce, over 200 wrestlers, coaches, and parents were able to attend a free wrestling clinic on Friday at Middletown High School. Those in attendance were treated to outstanding instruction given by a special guest technician… 2X NCAA Champion and 2008 Olympian Ben Askren. Askren, a University of Missouri graduate, has successfully transitioned into MMA and is currently the Bellator Welterweight Champion. This event was a great way for wrestlers, coaches, parents, and fans to get AMPED up for the upcoming season! Thank you again to Forever Fierce for funding this very special event!
Believe it or not, the season is almost here…Section 9 Duals start a week from Tuesday (December 6th)!!!! Scroll down for Section 9 Duals schedule.

Thanks in large part to SUNY Cortland’s Mike McGrath and Justin Signorelli, Section 9 was very well represented at 2011 Oneonta State Red Dragon Invitational on Saturday. McGrath, a junior and 2010 Kingston graduate, went 4-2 and took home 4th place honors at 184 lbs. 2009 Highland graduate Justin Signorelli, a team captain for SUNY Cortland, went 5-2 and placed 5th at 165 lbs. Great job both guys!!!
Also of local interest, Southern Maine finished 6th out of 11 in the team standings. Why is this of “of local interest”???? Southern Maine is coached by 1995 Middletown graduate Joe Pistone!
The Hofstra Pride won seven of the ten bouts enroute to recording a 25-12 victory over Wisconsin. The Hoftra (1-0) win was the first for new Head Wrestling Coach Rob Anspach. Wisconson dropped to 5-1 on the season.
One of the Pride’s victories came from 2009 Monroe Woodbury graduate Jamie Franco. Franco, a 133 lb. red-shirt sophomore, recored a 4-3 vicyory on an escape in the first tiebreaker. For the complete story and all individual results click on the link below.
How do we know that the wrestling season has officially started??? Simple….because SectionIXwrestling.com’s pre-season rankings are out! For the first few weeks of the season, we will be doing a combined D1 and D2 ranking. We will do separate D1 and D2 team rankings throughout the entire season. Let the debates begin!!!
Army junior Jordan Thome won four matches on Saturday enroute to earning the 133 lb. title at The Body Bar Invitational. Thome defeated Chris Dardanes from the University of Minnesota by a 9-8 score to capture the crown. He won his other three bouts by the scores of 12-0, 7-0, and 5-4. James Raftery (157), Coleman Gracey (165), and Michael Gorman (184) all earned 6th place honors for the Black Knights who finished 7th out of 12 teams. Host Cornell took the team title with Kent State and the University of Virginia rounding out the top 3. Virginia is coached by 1995 Middletown graduate Steve Garland.
Other locals at the Body Bar included Lock Haven’s Matt Parlier (Port Jervis, 2009) who went 1-2 at 197 lbs. and Dingmans Ferry, PA native Joe Stanzione who placed 5th at 133 wrestling for Cornell.
