Day 1 Recap for Section 9 Wrestlers

102 Pounds
The two topped ranked 102-pound wrestlers in Section 9, Cooper Merli from NFA and Luke Satriano from VC, went undefeated in Day 1 pools and are on opposite sides of the bracket for Day 2! Two other Section 9 wrestlers, Marco Futia from Wallkill and Lorenzo Caserto from Marlboro, went 1-2 in Day 1 pools.


110 Pounds
Section 9 has 4 wrestlers advancing to Day 2 here. Now down at 110, VC’s Nick Weeden led the way going 4-0 with 4 pins including a win by fall over Ewan Celestine from Red Hook who finished 3-1 and will wrestle in the quarters. Cornwall had two entries here, Kevin Aleci and Xavier Clavell – both finished 2nd in their pool and advance to Day 2! Other Section 9 wrestlers at 110 were VC’s Vincent Vidacovich (2-2), Kingston’s Logan Shultis (1-3) and Wallkill’s Liam McCarthy (0-2).

118 Pounds
Section 9’s top 2 ranked 118 pounders have advanced to Day 2! Red Hooks’ Rian Kirker looked very sharp in winning his pool going 4-0 while Wallkill’s Rocco Futia went 2-1 and will compete in the quarters. Highland’s Bradley Gallo went 3-1 but missed advancing to Day 2 by criteria. Kingston’s Angela Smith went 1-3 while Onteora’s Lily Kate Brosnan went 0-4 on the day.

126 Pounds
Valley Central’s Sebastian Vidacovich went 3-1 and was the only Section 9 wrestler to advance to Day 2 at 126. The other Section 9 wrestlers who competed on Day 1 were Kingston’s Domenic DeFelice (2-2), Highland’s Chris Gatto (2-2), Onteora’s Thomas Shield (1-3), Kingston’s Shane Cranna (1-3), Wallkill’s Viktor Banda (1-2), NFA’s Matthew Mercado (1-2), Beacon’s Brandon Martinez Henry (0-3), and Red Hook’s Kyran McCrudden (0-4).

132 Pounds
Section 9 has two wrestlers in the Day 2 quarters – NFA’s Kevin Segali and Red Hook’s Demetrius Massey. Segali went 1-1 and advanced via criteria while Massey went 3-1 in his pool! Other locals who competed here were Beacon’s Daniel Way (1-2), Wallkill’s Logan Stipak (0-3), Onteora’s Harrison Hughes (1-3), and Highland’s Michael Thomas (0-4).

138 Pounds
Cornwall’s Aaron Caoili went 2-1 and finished second in his pool so he advances to Day 2! Highland’s Logan Zehr went 2-1 in his pool but just missed out on advancing by criteria. Others Section 9 wrestlers who competed at 138 were Red Hook’s Jonathan Melitski (1-3), Onteora’s Steven Blakely (0-3), Kingston’s Zachary Waddell (0-4), and Wallkill’s Matt Rizzo (0-3).

145 Pounds
Section 2 advanced two to Day 2 at 145 – Jackson Merli from NFA and Simon Kiluba from Kingston. Both Jackson and Simon finished 2nd in their pool. Other locals who wrestled at 145 were Onteora’s Brenon Thiel (1-2), Red Hook’s Christian Totman (1-2), Cornwall’s Theo Ballentine (1-2), and Wallkill’s George Thomas (0-3).

152 Pounds
With three wrestlers advancing to Day 2, Section 9 is well represented at 152! Leading the way is Cornwall’s Tyler Reed who won his Day 1 pool going 5-0 with 4 pins and a tech fall! Reed’s quarterfinal opponent will be Cole Nelson from Red Hook who went 4-1 and took second in his pool. Valley Central’s Shawn Patterson also took second in his pool by going 4-1 and also makes it to Day 2. Other locals at 152 were Wallkill’s Marco Martini (3-2), Highland’s Joe Carpico (3-2), Kingston’s Leo Burns (2-3), Onteora’s Jack Longyear (1-4), NFA’s Alec Grogan (1-4), Beacon’s Brody Timm (1-4), Onteora’s Jacob Wood (0-5), and Highland’s Nick Violaris (0-5).

160 Pounds
Four of the eight quarterfinalists at 160 are from Section 9! Highland’s Logan Smith and NFA’s Anthony Manzi both won their pools while Wallkill teammates Brandon Lantos and Jai Barnett took second in their pools to advance to the quarters. Others competing at 160 were Onteora’s Avery Burns (2-2), Cornwall’s Patrick Cosgrove (3-2), Cornwall’s Kyle Grant (2-3), NFA’s Hunter Hecht (1-4), Onteora’s Cole Mastesson (1-3), Onteora’s Riley Hegeman (0-4), Beacon’s Isaac Hansen (0-5), and Highland’s Gunnar Smith (0-4).

172 Pounds
Cornwall’s Nick Cavallo’s was the only Section 9 wrestler to advance to Day 2. Nick won his pool by going 4-0 with 2 pins. Other locals who competed during Day 1 at 172 were Onteora’s Wyatt Konjas (2-2), NFA’s Chris Leggett (2-2), Wallkill’s Anthomy Annacone (1-3), Onteora’s Griffin Alterio (1-2), Wallkill’s Christian Lemus (1-3), Beacon’s Sean Heath (0-4) and Cornwall’s Shane Babcock (0-4).

189 Pounds
Section 9 also performed well at 189 with four of the eight quarterfinalists being local wrestlers! NFA’s Joe Ponesse led the way by winning his pool going 4-0 with four first period pins! One of his victims was Beacon’s Alex Khalil who took second in the pool so he also advances. Cornwall’s Liam Scott and Kingston’s Nick York both took second in their pools so they will wrestle in the quarters as well! The other Section 9 wrestlers at 189 were Beacon’s Aaron Pegues (1-2), Red Hook’s Tiernan Moran (0-3), Cornwall’s Harvey Mathis (0-4).

215 Pounds
Beacon’s Louis DelBianco won his pool so he, along with Cornwall’s Gavin Furst and Wallkill’s Chris Betcher, all advance to the Day two quarterfinal brackets. The other local 215 pounders who competed during Day 1 were Highland’s Danny Odell-Fratz (2-2), Beacon’s Jayden Calloway (2-2), NFA’s Aiden Harrison (1-3), Highland’s Mark Cozzupli (1-2), Onteora’s Logan Storey (1-3), Cornwall’s Gabriel Dayton (0-4), and Kingston’s Willaim Nekos (0-4).

285 Pounds
Our local boys also did well at heavyweight with 4 of the 8 quarterfinalists coming from Section 9! Nick Valenzano from Cornwall went 2-0 and won his pool while Beacon’s Tyler Haydt, Red Hook’s Luke Daniels, and Beacon’s Sam Lundsford all took 2nd in their pool. The other Section 9 wrestlers who competed at 285 were Cornwall’s Hezekiah Hill, Wallkill’s Matt Starr, Onteora’s Ronan Hegeman, Red Hook’s Mark Paschal, Beacon’s Niko Smith.

Mid-Hudson Tournament @ Arlington High School (no spectators)
Congratulations to Valley Central’s Luke Satriano for taking home the title at 102 pounds at the 2021 Mid-Hudson Tournament. Satriano, who defeated NFA’s Cooper Merli by fall in 3:49 in the finals, was Section 9’s only champion this year. The other finalists from Section 9 were NFA’s Cooper Merli (102), Valley Central’s Nicholas Weeden (110), Valley Central’s Sebastian Vidacovich (126), NFA’s Anthony Manzi (160), Beacon’s Louis DelBianco (215), and Cornwall’s Nick Valenzano (285).

Tuesday 12/28
Linn Crawn @ Kittatinny, NJ High School
Despite being without the services of PJ Duke and Mikey Altomer, Minisink Valley crossed state lines and took home the team title at the Linn Crawn Holiday Tournament in Kittatinny, NJ. Perhaps the highlight of the tournament occurred at 120 pounds where Minisink’s Sofia Macaluso became the first girl to ever win the Linn Crawn! Macaluso defeated North warren Regional’s Tom Dugan by a score of 7-5 to win the title! Also winning titles for Minisink Valley were Joseph Uhrig (106), Luke Greiner (144), Eric Tigue (150), Zack Ryder (157), Andrew Filip (189), and Ethan Gallo (215). Click here for complete results!

Wednesday 12/29
Massapequa Holiday Tournament
Monroe Woodbury and Middletown each crowned one champion and finished 6th and 8th respectively in the team race at the 2021 Massapequa Holiday Tournament. Monroe Woodbury junior Jordan Brown recorded a pin and a tech fall before taking the title at 138 with a 4-3 decision over Matthew Castillo from Port Washington. Stephan Monchery, a sophomore from Middletown, pinned his way to the title at 285! Section 9 had two other finalists in the tournament in Mike Zrelak (MW, 172), and Fernand Vera (Middletown, 215). Other top-6 placers for the Crusaders were Liam Hayes (5th @ 110), Maxim Javorsky (4th @ 118), Brandon Carcaterra (6th @ 145), Rob Liggio (5th @ 160), and Craig Ladka (6th @ 189). Other Middie place winners were Jayden Norris (5th @ 126), and Bryson Tibbs (4th @ 189).

Cooperstown Invitational
Congratulations to the Goshen wrestling team for taking 2nd place at the Cooperstown Invitational! The Gladiators crowned three individual champions and had 14 wrestlers place in the top 6 in their weight class! Jackson Brady won the title at 138 by going 5-0 with three pins. Winning the title at 189 was Max Winkler who took the crown by going 5-0 with 5 first period pins – twice he pinned his opponent in 11 seconds! Dom Siracusa won the title at 285 via four first period pins and a 10-3 decision in the finals. The other place winners for Goshen were Jacob Perales (2nd @ 118), Michael Lombardi (3rd @ 126), Jake Lederman (4th @ 132), Dan Weeden (6th @ 145), Henry Villodas (5th @ 152), Anthony Mitchell (6th @ 160), Aaron Gay (5th @ 172), Dante Joseph (3rd @ 189), Kyle Kubik (3rd @ 215), Aidan DeEntremont (3rd @ 285), and Declan Bernhardt (4th @ 285).

The Christmas “+2” is right around the corner, so I figured we should update the rankings before we see a lot of wrestlers change weights. I am still going to keep D1 and D2 together however they will eventually be separated. 102 Pounds
1. Cooper Merli – Newburgh Free Academy

No changes at 102. Merli and Satriano are undefeated and Luke had an impressive win over Wylie at the Port Jervis Holiday Tournament. Satriano versus Merli will be highly anticipated but we can’t overlook #3 Uhrig from MV who keeps improving! Wylie beat Judd 2-1 in a dual meet.

110 Pounds

Tufano is still undefeated and picked up a nice win over Rian Kirker who is #1 at 118. Boice has looked tough and is improving every day. Hayes looked great at Long Beach before having to med fft out of the tournament. Grossi has looked good so we move him up to #4 and Sullivan from MV slides back to #5.

Kirker’s only loss was to #1 100 pounder Tufano so he’s staying #1 at 118. Futia has looked great and remains #2 while VC’s Weeden jumps up to #3 after beating #4 Javorsky 1-0 in a dual. Giumarra drops out of the rankings for now and our new #5 is Logan Pennell from Pine Bush.

2019 state placewinner Greco is the clear #1 at this point but this weight is wide open and has some depth. Vidacovich, Tresch, and Macaluso are 2-4 and are all undefeated. Our new #5 is Gatto from Highland who’s only loss this year is to a very tough Santore fron Section 2 Shaker. Others to watch here are Norris from Middletown, Ospina from Rondout Valley, and Hockx from Saugerties!

Marchese has looked awesome and has his sights set on finishing on top of the podium in Albany. Degnon is still undefeated and has a win over #4 Barczak. McKernan is now at 132 and he’s our new #3 here and Rocco DeVeiro from Rondout has cracked the rankings and sits at #5 at 132! Keep your eye on Kevin Segali from NFA and Griffin Petzold from Warwick here!

138 Pounds

After finishing 2nd at Ironman, MV freshman PJ Duke has shown that he’s one of the top 138 pounders in the entire nation. MW state placer Jordan Brown is undefeated and looks very strong here. The next three, Jackson Brady, Justin Coiteux, and Michael Franco, are having great seasons and new to the rankings!

145 Pounds

With Brown moving down to 138, Merli is our new #1 at 145. Greiner has looked impressive and is at #2 while undefeated Ryan Ross from Port is at #3. Gennaro from Washingtonville moves up to #4 and our new #5 is Logan Zehr from Highland who is down from 152. We need to keep our eyes on Marlboro’s Reese Greathouse and Wallkill’s George Thomas who are off to great starts!

Tigue made it to the blood round at Ironman and looks great, so he stays #1 at 152. Reed has been equally impressive as has Cuppett, so they are 2 and 3. Walter Evans from Ellenville is at 152 but only has a few matches so we put him at #4 for now. The #5 spot wasn’t easy because Nilson beat Aljamal from Washingtonville but lost to Christian Hockx from Saugerties. Hockx beat Nilson but lost to Almajal while Almajal lost to Nilson but beat Hockx. We are going with Nilson for now but this one will be fun to watch.

160 Pounds
1. Zack Ryder – Minisink Valley

Ryder finished 3rd at Ironman and is the clear #1 at 160! Burns only has a few matches but looks good and we’ll put him at #2 followed by Ryder’s teammate Racz who has been a pinning machine. Logan Smith is down at 160 and comes in at #4 with an impressive pin over #5 Serafin from Washingtonville. A wrestler to watch here is Mazzella from Warwick.

172 Pounds

Zrelak’s only loss is out of Section 9 so he stays top dog at 172. Myles Gordon beat Manzi in a close match, so they slot in at #2 and #3 respectively. Konjas from Onteora is off to a great start while DiCurcio, whose only loss is at 189, stays at #5.

Altomer is still up at 189 and remains #1 here after a very impressive performance at the Jim Wilson Duals including a pin over the top ranked 172 pounder from Section 8. Pennell looks great and remains our #2 here, Ponesse is up to #3 and Goshen’s Max Winkler takes over #4 via his pin over #5 Tibbs from Middletown. Others to watch here are Figueroa from Port Jervis and Bucci from Saugerties!

The 2021-2022 season is in full swing and this weekend will be pretty special! On Friday and Saturday Minisink Valley has 4 wrestlers registered to compete in the 2021 Walsh Ironman Tournament in Ohio. The Ironman is without question the toughest in-season high school wrestling tournament in the nation. With over 80 nationally ranked wrestlers and almost every top-25 nationally ranked team in attendance, the tournament will be an absolute meat grinder! Both Goshen and Saugerties finished 3-2 on the day. Port Jervis wrestler Matthew Oosterom (215) was named the 2021 Lance Golubinski Memorial Duals Most Outstanding Wrestler. He finished the day 5-0 with 5 first period pins! Matthew’s brother, James, was also a past winner of the award back in 2018.

Minisink Valley dominated the field at the Ballston Spa Duals outscoring their opponents 352-21. The Warriors had 10 wrestlers go undefeated: Joseph Uhrig (5-0 @ 102), Anthony Tresch (3-0 @ 126), Sofia Macaluso (2-0 @ 126), PJ Duke (5-0 @ 138), Luke Greiner (5-0 @ 145), Zack Ryder (5-0 @ 160), George Razc (5-0 @ 172), Mikey Altomer (5-0 @ 189), Andrew Filip (5-0 @ 215), Ethan Gallo (5-0 @ 285). Monroe Woodbury crowned two champions and had seven wrestlers place in the top six at the 2021 Battle at the Beach. Jordan Brown took home the title at 138 and Mike Zrelak pinned all four of his opponents in the first period to take home the crown at 172. The other Crusaders who made the podium were Amado Urena (4th @ 102), Liam Hayes (4th @ 110), Maxim Javorky (5th @ 118), Brandon Carcaterra (4th @ 152), and Eryk Shammgod (3rd @ 189).
