Section 9 Wrestling
Individual Rankings – Combined D1/D2
December 31, 2017

Well our wrestlers have their 2 pound growth allowance and many of them have made the drop to their anticipated post season weight!  We also have enough data to include a ranking for the 99 pound weight class.  The Mid-Hudson Tournament provided us with many head-to-head matches of ranked opponents so there will be many shake-ups in this week’s rankings!
Reminder….Eastern States Classic is right around the corner and we are always looking for volunteers.  If you can help in any capacity please contact me at sectionixwrestling@gmail.com.

99 Pounds
1. Nikko Walsh – Rondout Valley, freshman
2. Christian Prokosch – Cornwall, senior
3. Andrew Marchese – Washingtonville, 8th grade
4. Evan Hewitt – Minisink Valley, freshman
5. Matt Davis – Wallkill, freshman
6. Richard Toledo – Monroe Woodbury, junior

Walsh was impressive at the Mid-Hudson!  He recorded a 2-1 win over #2 Prokosch and was awarded Freshman MOW! Marchese, Hewitt, Davis, and Toledo have no head-to-heads and very few common opponents so 3-6 is a toss-up at this point.  VC’s Lennon has looked good as well!

106 Pounds
1. Greg Fischer – NFA, senior
2. Nick Picariello – Minisink Valley, sophomore
3. Justin Morales – Middletown, sophomore
4. Jacob Chenier – Kingston, sophomore
5. Drew Greco – Warwick, freshman
6. Matt Morris – Red Hook, sophomore

Fischer looked awesome at the Mid-Hudson. He finished 3rd and his only loss was a tight 4-2 decision to eventual champ and 2017 state place winner Ivan Garcia from Section 1. Picariello lost a close match to Fischer earlier this year so we have him at #2, right in front of Morales who missed weight for 99/101 at the Massapequa Holiday Tournamnet so he stays here for now.  He will be a force at 101 if he can make it! Chenier, Greco, and Morris round out 4-6 but keep an eye on Grant Barczak from Monroe Woodbury.

113 Pounds
1. Dylan Earl – Monroe Woodbury, senior
2. Jordan Suarez – Minisink Valley, sophomore
3. Ryan Burgos – Monroe Woodbury, junior
4. Hunter Brown – Warwick, senior
5. Eric Tigue – Port Jervis, 8th grade
6. Derek Ellison – Wallkill, junior

2017 state placer Earl drops down to 113 and takes over as the new #1.  Section 9 finalist Suarez also drops down and won the 113 title at Kittatinny so comes in at #2.  Burgos lost to teammate Earl in the finals at Massapequa and is #3. Brown has been dominating and shouldn’t be overlooked while Tigue and Ellison are also having strong seasons.

120 Pounds
1. Marco Vespa – Monroe Woodbury, junior
2. Brandon DeLaRosa – Newburgh Free Academy, junior
3. Patrick Ross – Onteora, freshman
4. Liam Bullock – Chester, junior
5. Travis Phillips – Valley Central, sophomore
6. Joey Amato – Port Jervis, sophomore

Returning state placer Vespa drops down to 120 and rolls through the Massapequa tournament.  He’s our clear #1 here. DeLaRosa didn’t make it through Day 1 at the Mid-Hudson due to a defensive pin against Lyle from Wallkill but we give him a pass and keep him at #2. Ross took 4th at Mid-Hudson and is our #3 while Bullock from Chester comes in at #4. Phillips looked tough at Mid-Hudson and is at #5 while our new #6 is Port’s Joey Amaoto who cam ein 3rd at a tournament at Bethlehem Catholic in PA.

126 Pounds
1. James Faison – Wallkill, sophomore
2. Tom Maddox – Washingtonville, junior
3. Matthew Romano – Valley Central, sophomore
4. Ethan Palanca – New Paltz, freshman
5. Luke Fischer – Newburgh Free Academy, sophomore
6. Sean Savacool – Minisink Valley, sophomore

Faison lost to Albis in the finals of the Mid-Hudson and takes over #1 at 126. Maddox defeated Romano head to head and jumps all the way to #2 followed by #3 Romano and New Paltz frosh Palanca who had an impressive major of defending D2 champ Ross. Fischer remains above Kittatinny champ Savacool via his head to head victory.

132 Pounds
1. Connor Greiner – Minisink Valley, senior
2. Tommy Askey – Pine Bush, sophomore
3. Carson Sauschuck – Port Jervis, senior
4. Max Wernicki – Monroe Woodbury, sophomore
5. Hunter Phillips – Valley Central, junior
6. Trevor Faveron – Onteora, senior

Greiner cruised to a title at Kittatinny and remains #1. Askey makes an impressive return to action at Mid-Hudson.  The Pine Bush junior came in 3rd and his only loss was to eventual champ Lievano from S8. Sauschuck is at #3 and we have a new #4 in Max Wernicki who took 3rd at the Massapequa tournament. VC’s Phillips looked solid at Mid-Hudson as did Faveron from Onteora whose only S9 loss is to Askey.

138 Pounds
1. Dom Vetrano – Minisink Valley, senior
2. Joe McGinty – Monroe Woodbury, sophomore
3. Frank Fea – Goshen, senior
4. Dylan Greer – Pine Bush, senior
5. Nate Ross – Onteora, sophomore
6. Mat Malherio – Highland, junior

138 is a great weight to follow in both D1 and D2.  Two time D1 champ Dom Vetrano is our #1 but don’t sleep on MW sophomore McGinty who just placed 2nd at the Massapequa tournament. Fea and Greer are both very good and will not roll over for anyone.  Nate Ross comes in at #5 followed by Malhario from Highland.  Gavin Staerker from Port Jervis and Nick Curerri from Eldred are both in the mix here too!

145 Pounds
1. Vinny Vetrano – Minisink Valley, senior
3. Steve Gazzillo – Cornwall, junior
3. Ian Houck – Rondout Valley, senior
4. Nick Florin – Pine Bush, junior
5. Zach Chartrand – Onteora, senior
6. Dan Mandic – Goshen, senior

Vetrano holds the top spot at 145 but the next 3 were very tough to rank. Gazzillo had a common opponent win over Houck at Mid-Hudson so we’llmake him #2 followed by Houck then #4 Florin from Pine Bush. Chartrand drops down to 145 is our new #5 while Mandic remains #6.

152 Pounds
1. Tyler Serafini – Newburgh Free Academy, junior
2. William Harrison – Port Jervis, junior
3. Carter Stewart – Monroe Woodbury, senior
4. Joe Pushman – Wallkill, senior
5. Dan Heffner – Cornwall, junior
6. Joe Velazquez – Middletown, sophomore

NFA junior Serafini drops down to 152 and makes it to the finals at the Mid-Hudson and is our new #1.  Serafini has a head-to-head win over #2 Harrison who finished 3rd in the Bethlehem Catholic tournament. Stewart finished 2nd at Massapequa and his loss was to a kid from Canada. Pushman, Heffner, and Velaquez are all having great years and round out 4-6.

160 Pounds
1. Shaun Burgos – Pine Bush, senior
2. Tristen Schiafo – Red Hook, senior
3. Griffin Roddy – Port Jervis, senior
4. Ray Napolitano – Valley Central, senior
5. Manny Wilson – Kingston, senior
6. Destin Morano – Middletown, junior

Shaun Burgos looked great in winning the Mid-Hudson and is our new #1 at 160!  He defeated Schiafo in the finals who is now #2. Roddy from PJ placed in Bethlehem and grabs the #3 slot right ahead of Napolitano who is putting together a nice season. Manny Wilson from Kingston is our new #5 and Middletown’s Morano takes the #6 position in our rankings.

170 Pounds
1. Dillon Ross – Onteora, senior
2. Timmy Ganuncio – Minisink Valley, senior
3. Jason Butler – Port Jervis, senior
4. Matt Bucci – Saugerties, junior
5. Collin Cummings – Valley Central, senior
6. Brian Mascaro – Wallkill, senior

Ross was dominating at the Mid-Hudson going unscored upon on his way to the title.  Ganuncio was equally impressive in winning the Kittatinny tournament.  Butler drops down to 170 and takes 3rd at Bethlehem tournament. Bucci came in 4th at Mid-Hudson and pinned Cummings on Day 2. Cummings avenged an early season loss to Mascaro and grabs the #5 spot.

182 Pounds
1. Joe Yanis – Minisink Valley, senior
2. Chris Tremper – Pine Bush, senior
3. Alex Miller – Newburgh Free Academy, senior
4. Graeme Knisell – Saugerties, sophomore
5. Collin Cassidy – Cornwall, junior
6. Luke Wojehowski – Cornwall, junior

Yanis dominated the competition at Kittatinny and remains #1. Tremper pinned Knisell and placed 3rd at the Mid-Hudson and moved up to #2 followed by Miller then Knisell. Two Cornwall wrestlers, Cassidy and Wojehowski, grab the #5 and #6 slots respectively.

195 Pounds
1. Maxx DeCapua – Newburgh Free Academy, sophomore
2. Sam Santander – Monroe Woodbury, junior
3. Julius Oquendo – Middletown, senior
4. Andrew Wierzbicki – Warwick, senior
5. Ben Santarpia – Washingtonville, senior
6. Anton Juncaj – Minisink Valley, junior

DeCapua was the champ at the Mid-Hudson. Oquendo drops to 195 for the NFA/Middletown dual and loses 5-4 TB1 to DeCapua so we move him up to #3. Santander, Wierzbicki, and Santarpia were idle over the holiday. Juncaj looked tough finishing 3rd at the Kittatinny tournament. Ryan Hobson didn’t make it to Day 2 at the Mid-Hudson but gave champ DeCapua his toughest test on the tournament on Day 1 so he’s definitely someone we should keep an eye on!

220 Pounds
1. Will Leonard – Cornwall, junior
2. David Strauss- Monroe Woodbury, junior
3. Hayden Barley – Kingston, junior
4. Anthony Owen – Saugerties, junior
5. Mark Crisfield – Valley Central. junior
6. Adam Fenner – Minisink Valley, freshman

Leonard looked great in winning the Mid-Hudson and hold onto the top spot but Massapequa finalist Strauss has been very impressive too. Barley is having a great season and is #3. Owen made it to the finals of the Mid-Hudson and is #4 one spot above Crisfield who he beat 12-7. MV freshman Fenner continues to improve and is our #6.

285 Pounds
1. Andrew Fenner – Minisink Valley, senior
2. Liam Dietrich – Red Hook, sophomore
3. Bryce Moore – Valley Central, junior
4. Preston Havison – Monroe Woodbury, junior
5. Caleb Williams – Newburgh Free Academy, junior
6. James Oosterom – Port Jervis, sophomore

Fenner pinned his way through Kittatinny for his 2nd title there and remains #1 at 285. Red Hook sophomore Dietrich wins the Mid-Hudson and had a head-to head over #3 Moore so he takes over #2.  Havison came in 5th at Massapequa and is having a good year as is Williams who took 5th at Mid-Hudson. Our new #6 is Port Jervis sophomore Oosterom who is putting together a very nice season thus far!

Section 9 Individual Rankings 12-17-17

Section 9 Wrestling
Individual Rankings – Combined D1/D2
December 17, 2017

Take a look at the latest rankings for Section 9!  We are going to wait at least one more week until we rank 99 pounds but it looks like it could be a strong weight class once again this year….especially after the +2!  Once again, respectful comments are welcomed via email at sectionixwrestling.com or through the “Comment” section.  Enjoy!!!

106 Pounds
1. Colby Amell – Saugerties, junior
2. Justin Morales – Middletown, sophomore
3. Nikko Walsh – Rondout Valley, freshman
4. Christian Prokosh – Cornwall, senior
5. Jacob Chenier – Kingston, sophomore
6. Matt Morris – Red Hook, sophomore

No changes at 106.  Morales has looked strong and took home the title at the Patriot Invitational.  Walsh notched a nice sv win over Prokosh at the Dragon Duals.  Amell has yet to wrestle but should return to the mat soon.

113 Pounds
1. Greg Fischer – Newburgh Free Academy, senior
2. Ryan Burgos – Monroe Woodbury, junior
3. Hunter Brown – Warwick, senior
4. Nick Picariello – Minisink Valley, sophomore
5. Eric Tigue – Port Jervis, 8th grade
6. Derek Ellison – Wallkill, junior

Fischer is undefeated locally and Burgos hasn’t wrestled a S9 opponent yet but the top 2 stay the same. Brown slides into the #3 spot with an impressive win over #4 Picariello and a hard fought 3-0 loss to #1 Fischer. Fischer and Picariello wrestled a close 2-0 match. Port Jervis 8th grader Tigue breaks into the rankings this week at #5 as does Wallkill’s Ellison who grabs the #6 spot.

120 Pounds
1. Dylan Earl – Monroe Woodbury, senior
2. Brandon DeLaRosa – Newburgh Free Academy, junior
3. Jordan Suarez – Minisink Valley, sophomore
4. Patrick Ross – Onteora, freshman
5. Liam Bullock – Chester, junior
6. Chris Zappolo – Washingtonville, junior

120 is loaded!  As a returning state place winner, Earl stays in the top spot.  DeLaRosa and Suarez swap spots after the NFA junior posted a head to head win over the MV sophomore.  Ross’s only loss has been to NYS finalist Jon Charles from Section 3 while Bullock is rolling and hasn’t lost to a S9 wrestler.  Zappolo enters the rankings at #6 this week but watch out for John Antonelli who dropped a close 10-7 to Bullock last week!

126 Pounds
1. Marco Vespa – Monroe Woodbury, junior
2. James Faison – Wallkill, sophomore
3. Nick Ross – Onteora, freshman
4. Luke Fischer – Newburgh Free Academy, sophomore
5. Tom Maddox – Washingtonville, junior
6. Sean Savacool – Minisink Valley, sophomore

Top 3 stay the same but Luke Fischer is the new #4 after his 2-1 won over Savacool. Maddox is 11-0 with 9 pins and 2 techs and moves up to #5. Vespa is the clear favorite here but this is another very tough weight class! New Paltz’s Ethan Palanca is undefeated at 126 and could easily be ranked here as well!

132 Pounds
1. Connor Greiner – Minisink Valley, senior
2. Matthew Romano – Valley Central, sophomore
3. Tommy Askey – Pine Bush, sophomore
4. Carson Sauschuck – Port Jervis, senior
5. James Heinlein – Saugerties, junior
6. Gabriel Thompson – Valley Central, junior

Sauschuck beat Heinlein 4-3 so they swap places.  Greiner is undefeated and has been dominant and remains #1.  Romano went 5-0 at Ravena while Askey is set to return to action soon.  Thompson, also from VC, has looked good at 132 and debuts at #6 this week.

138 Pounds
1. Dom Vetrano – Minisink Valley, senior
2. Joe McGinty – Monroe Woodbury, sophomore
3. Frank Fea – Goshen, senior
4. Dylan Greer – Pine Bush, senior
5. Mat Malherio – Highland, junior
6. Nick Curreri – Eldred, junior

It looks Dom Vetrano will go at 138 for the Warriors while twin brother Vinny will wrestle 145 for the Warriors.  Vetrano is undefeated and was just selected MOW of the Colonie Tournament. Nate Ross moves to 145 so McGinty, Fea, and Greer slide up one spot. Curreri is our new #6 right behind Malherio from Highland who has a head to hear over Curreri.

145 Pounds
1. Vinny Vetrano – Minisink Valley, senior
2. Nate Ross – Onteora, sophomore
3. Steve Gazzillo – Cornwall, junior
4. Nick Florin – Pine Bush, junior
5. Robert Estevez – Monroe Woodbury, junior
6. Dan Mandic – Goshen, senior

Vinny Vetrano grabs the #1 spot here but it was a toss-up between him and Nate Ross who is having a very strong start to the season. Gazzillo is 10-2 with his only losses coming to Dom Vetrano (MV) and Wrobel (Section1) – both were state qualifiers last season. Florin is very solid at #4 and Estevez is expected to return to action soon and is our #5. Mandic has losses to Curreri and Florin and is #6 here.

152 Pounds
1. Ian Houck – Rondout Valley, senior
2. Zach Chartrand – Onteora, senior
3. William Harrison – Port Jervis, junior
4. Carter Stewart – Monroe Woodbury, senior
5. Joe Pushman – Wallkill, senior
6. Dan Heffner – Cornwall, junior

Top-ranked Houck looked good with his 5-4 win over new #2 Chartrand and 7-4 win over #3 Harrison! Stewart from MW is the new #4 then Pushman at #5 who had a nice win over Velazquez of Middletown. Cornwall junior Dan Heffner is 8-4 and is our #6 this week.

160 Pounds
1. Tyler Serafini – Newburgh Free Academy, junior
2. Tristen Schiafo – Red Hook, senior
3. Shaun Burgos – Pine Bush, senior
4. Destin Morano – Middletown, junior
5. Griffin Roddy – Port Jervis, senior
6. Ray Napolitano – Valley Central, senior

Serafini is our new #1 with his 6-4 win over Schiafo from Red Hook! Burgos has looked awesome and could make a case for #1 very soon! Morano is solid at #4 and Roddy and Napolitano enter the rankings at #5 and #6 respectively.

170 Pounds
1. Dillon Ross – Onteora, senior
2. Timmy Ganuncio – Minisink Valley, senior
3. Brian Mascaro – Wallkill, senior
4. Nick Solek – Washingtonville, senior
5. Matt Bucci – Saugerties, junior
6. Collin Cummings – Valley Central, senior

Another very tough weight class!  Ross and Ganuncio remain #1 and #2 and would be a great match to watch! Mascaro has been awesome this year and will definitely challenge for a S9 title. Solek, Bucci, and Cummings round out 4, 5, and 6 and are all very tough!  Keep your eyes on Conner Leggett here!

182 Pounds
1. Joe Yanis – Minisink Valley, senior
2. Jason Butler – Port Jervis, senior
3. Graeme Knisell – Saugerties, sophomore
4. Alex Miller – Newburgh Free Academy, senior
5. Collin Cassidy – Cornwall, junior
6. Nicholas Rekuc – Ellenville, junior

Yanis drops down to 182 and is the clear #1 while Butler looks to be a huge favorite in D2 at this weight. Knisell is having a great season as are Miller and Cassidy. Ellenville’s Rekuc stays at #6 with very limited action though.

195 Pounds
1. Maxx DeCapua – Newburgh Free Academy, sophomore
2. Sam Santander – Monroe Woodbury, junior
3. Andrew Wierzbicki – Warwick, senior
4. Ben Santarpia – Washingtonville, senior
5. Ryan Hobson – Red Hook, senior
6. Anton Juncaj – Minisink Valley, junior

DeCapua’s only loss has been to Yanis so he is our new #1 at 195. Santander has looked great in limited action and Wierzbicki, Santarpia, and Hobson are all very solid.  MV junior Juncaj has only one loss in S9 (6-0 to Leonard at 220) and he breaks into the rankings at #6.

220 Pounds
1. Will Leonard – Cornwall, junior
2. David Strauss- Monroe Woodbury, junior
3. Julius Oquendo – Middletown, senior
4. Hayden Barley – Kingston, junior
5. John Goodell – Eldred, senior
6. Adam Fenner – Minisink Valley, freshman

Leonard has looked great so he debuts at #1 but Strauss looked impressive with his wbf over #3 Oquendo.  Barley has racked up a bunch of wins and we have a new #6 in Minisink freshman Adam Fenner!

285 Pounds
1. Andrew Fenner – Minisink Valley, senior
2. Bryce Moore – Valley Central, junior
3. Max Kissack – Washingtonville, senior
4. Preston Havison – Monroe Woodbury, junior
5. Liam Dietrich – Red Hook, sophomore
6. Caleb Williams – Newburgh Free Academy, junior

No changes at 285.  Fenner has dominated local wrestlers, as has Moore! Kissack has been out but should return soon.  Havison has yet to lose and Dietrich beat Williams 1-0 recently. Keep and eye on Chase Hawkins from Wallkill!
