What to Watch For….
Section 3 champ Mason Bush placed 5th in the state last year at this weight and was a ESC finalist this year making him one of the favorites here.  Bush is 49-2 this season but one of his losses was to S3 wildcard Devin Coleman at the S3 Class B tournament; a loss that he would avenge in the S3 finals.  Bush has 6 wins over wrestlers in the field! Caleb Svingala is a perfect 40-0 this season and will definitely be one of the wrestlers challenging Bush for the title. Dante Geislinger from S4 has a few very close losses to Bush this season and will definitely contend as will S9 champ Nikko Walsh. Merwin (S4) has a win over Walsh and will make noise here as will Schubert and Schafer, both from S5.

What to Watch For…
All signs point towards a showdown of last year’s D2 state title match between S5 champ Noto and S11 champ Titus.  Last year Noto won the state title with an OT pin but Titus exacted revenge in the semis of this year’s Eastern States Classic winning 5-1 in sudden victory.  There is plenty of talent here though and we can expect to see a few other guys contend for the top step on the podium. Baer (S10) and  Balducci (S1) both placed at this tournament last year and we definetely have to keep our eyes on Micah Roes who only has 1 loss this season and it was to 113 S3 D2 champ Marek Bush. Mike Evans from S6 could be a sleeper here as well!

What to Watch For...
This is going to be an awesome weight to follow with 5 former state place winners all vying for the title!  Marek Bush (S3), John Worthing (S4), Drew Schafer (S5), Joe Costrastano (S8), and Matt Garland (S3) have all placed in Albany!  S7 champ Seymour only has 2 losses – both at ESC and one was a 4-2 loss to D1 S11 champ Sean Carter. Throw in Merwin (S4) and  Alshawi (S6) and this becomes a very deep weight. One of the more intriguing wrestlers here may be S9 champ Eric Tigue who notched a 5-3 win over 2016 state champ Jon Charles.

What To Watch For:
The Section 2 champion Trent Svingala is a returning state champ and has a perfect 38-0 record this year making him a definite favorite to take home title number two! Svingala has scored bonus points in nearly every match this season however one wrestler had kept him to a regular decision twice, wildcard entry Aidan Cullen (S2). In his title run last year Svingala’s closest match was to Brad Cheek from S5 who is also in this year’s bracket and hopes to reverse the outcome of the 4-2 sudden victory loss he suffered in Albany last year. We also need to watch for last year’s 113 pound state finalist Caleb Robinson from Section 4 as well as Keith Cassar from S8 who finished 4th at 113 last year. S9 champ Palanca has made great strides this year and could end up making a run for the medal stand!

What to Watch For…
Defending state champion Orion Anderson from Section 2 is perhaps the biggest favorite to win his weight in the entire D2 tournament!  His only loss this year was in the finals of the Eastern States Classic for Beau Bartlett from Wyoming Seminary – the 4th ranked 126 pounder in the nation according to FloWrestling! Others contending at 126 will be Matt Campo (S11) and Mikey Squires (S4) – both state place winners last year. S5 champ Schuster has only lost once this yearand will be in the mix as will Miceli from S11 and S5 wildcard Ferro!  And do not sleep on Bradell from S6 … he has an impressive 35-3 record and has posted some great wins this season!

What to Watch For…
There are 5 returning state placewinners in this bracket! Luke Bokina from S11 and Hector Colom from S6 were both state finalists last year however they both have losses this year to S3 champion Cahal Donovan who placed 4th in NYS last year. Donovan came in 3rd at ESC this year and also has a win over S5 champ Young who was a state placer last season. S1 champ Sams placed 6th in NYS last year and we definitely need to watch S6 wildcard Evans who has a win this year over Colom! S8 champ Costa should definitely not be overlooked. He has only 3 losses on the season including a tough 3-2 decision to Bokina at the ESC.

What to Watch For…
Section 4 champ Bivar is a returning state place winner and he’s having a great year.  His only loss on the season has been at 152 pounds to defending state champ Hunter Shaut. One of his closest matches all year was a 3-2 win over S11 champ Zarif.  Section 3 has two strong entries in McKenna and Gerber. McKenna has two losses on the season, both were at the Eastern States Classic and one was a 5-4 decision to ESC champ Chris Gomez. Gerber has lost 4 times to McKenna this year but each time it’s been by 2 points or fewer. Section 5 has two strong entries in Runfola and Gray and so does S1 in Wrobel in Bruno. S6 champ Putney is 42-2 with one loss coming to a kid from Sem and the other to D1 entry DeWolff.

What to Watch For….
145 will be awesome to follow – we have a state champion, state finalist, and a state 3rd in this bracket!  Section 3 champ Hunter Shaut was a state champion last year and is having a great year this year.  His only 2 losses were close decisions to D1 wrestlers at the Eastern States Classic. He defeated S3 wildcard Philpotts 2-1 in ot to win the title this year; Philpotts finished 3rd in NYS last year and will definitely contend for a title.  S11 champ Jack Bokina finished 2nd in the state at 126 last year but has handled the jump to 145 quite well! He is 42-2 thsi season with his two losses coming at ESC to D1 studs Shanahan and Mosher – ironically they are the same two wrestlers who have defeated Shaut this year. Cory Day from S6 is having a great year and we should also keep an eye on S9’s Ian Houck who is poised to make a run at the medal stand. This weight is deep too – we should expect to see Duers (S2) and Wood (S5) contend for spots on the medal stand!

This class is loaded with four returning state placewinners and several others who not only have a shot at placing, but could actually take home the title!  S1 champ Jack Chesman finished 3rd in NYS last season and is 31-3 this year. Two of his losses, however, are to wrestlers in this bracket – Petretti from S11 and Carroll from S3 (by forfeit). Chesman’s opponent in last year’s medal round match was Dylan Ingrao from S6 who needed a wildcard this year because he lost in the S6 finals to Zach Brown! Section 2 champion Zach Lawrence finished 5th in NYS last year and is 47-2 this year! His two losses were down at 145 at the ESC where he lost to Gissendanner and Bokina. PSAL champ Bogie finished 6th in NYS last year and will definitely contend here. Both S3 entries, Williams and Carroll, could place high here as could both S5 entries, Compton and Sharp.

Where to start, where to start??? Jacob Nolan is a multi-time NYS placewinner and he finished 4th last year. He also took 4th at the ESC this year. Dan Torres placed 5th at the state tournament last year and his having a great year. He is 54-1 on the season and his one loss was avenged in the S6 finals to wildcard entry Rowe. Cooper (S2) and Roes (S3) both are having great seasons and could place high here as can S11 champ O’Neil. DeRidder from S8, Palaszewski (S2), Johnson (S4), and S9 champ Schaifo will all be in the hunt as well!  Great weight at 160 D2!

Section 3 champ Ross McFarland was a state finalist last season and is definitely one of the favorites to take the title this year! He has not lost to a D2 wrestler all season however one of his toughest wins was a 3-2 victory over S9 champ Dillon Ross who is also one of the favorites here. Section 6 champ Penhollow has an impressive 54-1 record and will be in the hunt here as will S2 champ Conte as will S5 champ Wolfanger. Don’t sleep on Rifanburg from S4 or O’Brein from S8…both are very tough.

There is plenty of talent in D2 at 182 but S7 champ LaPier, S4 Champ Slater, and S3 champ Fredericks are probably the top 3 dogs! Lapier placed 3rd in NYS last year and finished 5th in the ESC this year after dropping a close 5-3 decision to eventual champ Jake Logan in the semis! Fredericks placed 5th at the state tournament last year and Slater took 8th at the ESC this year. Mike Sabella from S11 is very tough and we also should keep an Hoose from S6. Butler from S9, Damboise from S5, and McNeil from S2 will also contend for a spot on the podium here.

What to Watch For…
Section 3 champ Simmons was a state finalist last season and finished 5th at this year’s ESC making him the favorite at 195 D2 but he will not run through this weight class untested! Section 6 champion Corey Keefe placed 6th at last year’s state tournament and lost a 1-0 nail-biter to Simmons earlier this year. Keefe defeated Zach Trim in his Section 6 final but Trim defeated Keefe earlier in the season so he’s certainly in the conversation as is Section 4 champ Richie Knapp who is putting together a solid season! S5 champ Holley is 33-3 and could go deep here as could the S5 wildcard Degroff who has a win over Holley this year. A few other to watch include Spoon from S2, Croston from S11, and Floyd from S4.

Section 3 champion Joe Benedict is a 2X NYS finalist and he plans on ascending up the podium to that top spot this year!  Benedict is undefeated and had pinned nearly every opponent in the first period including in the finals of this year’s Eastern States Classic.  He has scored bonus points in all but 2 matches this year. Benedict’s stiffest competition will likely come from S6 champion Rigerman who’s only loss on the mat this season was a 5-1 loss to D1 stud Andreesen. A few others to watch in this bracket include Section 5 champ Barnhart and Section 4 champ Rice.

What to Watch For…
This is a very open weight class but PSAL champ Gomez and S6 champ Robinson seem to be the favorites. Robinson placed 4th at ESC and posted a 4-3 win over Wood in the tournament.  Gomez only has 1 loss and that was to D1 stud Rabinovich. Both Section 4 entries, Williams and Wood, could place high here as could S3 champ Briggs. Section 9 champ Liam Dietrich is only a sophomore but has been showing great improvement. He could definitely surprise some people here.

Congratulation to all of the girls who competed in the 2018 Girl’s Folkstyle State Invitational but special CONGRATULATIONS goes out to Section 9’s very own Mia Macaluso for taking home the title at the 128 pound weight class.  Mia, a sophomore at Minisink Valley, pinned all of her opponents on her way to the podium!  Mia’s teammate Grace Pauls, also a sophomore at Minisink, recorded 3 pins and finished in 2nd place at 117 pounds. Minisink Valley won the team race finishing with 54 points!

The tournament takes place on Saturday February 17 at Truman High School in the Bronx. Wrestling will begin at 10:30.

What To Watch For….
Shenendehowa freshman Stevo Poulin dominated the competition at the Eastern States Classic and has to be considered the favorite here but Section 8 champ Liardi finished 3rd at the ESC and will definitely contend! All 3 Section 11 entries, Diresta, Weinhaus, and Smith, will contend. Smith and Diresta have split two matches against each other this year. Smith was 5th at ESC and had wins over Schreiber (S1) and Camillaci (S5). Schreiber has 2 wins over Wade who has a 30-3 record. We may want to keep an eye on Flick from St. Anthony’s who, although he has 10 losses, has not lost a match at 99 all season – all of his losses are at 106 and mostly to PA and NJ kids! Morales is strong and explosive and could open some eyes in Albany.

What To Watch For…
With five returning state place winners this will be a great weight and there are several wrestlers with a chance to win, but Matt Griffin from S3 is probably our favorite here. He finished 4th in NYS last year, was the ESC champ this year and posted wins over state placer Garcia, Harry, and last year’s 99 pound state finalist Adams. He also pinned D2 state finalist Jordan Titus in the ESC finals! Jayden Scott from S5 is an 8th grader with a 29-3 record. He has not lost all year at 106 – his losses have been to Marek Bush at 113 (2-0), state champion Noto at 113 (1-0), and to Ryan Burgos at 120!  Encarnacion finished 6th in NYS last year is extremely tough and will contend here as will Eckerle from S11 and Sleezer from S2. Both Robin (4th NYS last year) and Fischer have been very competitive against several in this field and may both contend for a medal.

What to Watch For...
This weight is loaded with talent and depth! 2X NYS champion Greg Diakomihalis is ranked #10 in the nation by FloWrestling and is definitely the favorite to bring home state title #3! That said, the Hilton sophomore will be tested by several very capable wrestlers. Dylan Ryder from S11 is a state champ and a 2X state finalist however he needed a wildcard to get in because he was picked off in the S11 finals by Sean Carter from North Babylon. Parker Rozler from S6 is tough as nails as is Hughes from S3 Fulton. Section 9 champ Earl placed 5th in the state last year and could be in the hunt for a medal as should both S8 entries – Aiden Aaroz and Xavier Pommells. Section 1 wildcard McGonegal and CHSAA Szilagyi can contend here as well!  This is a very deep weight class!

What to Watch For…
120 is definitely a weight that is up for grabs but if we had to call one wrestler the favorite it would have to be Anthony Sciotto from S11.  The Rocky Point senior finished 3rd in NYS last year one spot ahead of S9 rep Marco Vespa who will definitely be in the hunt.  Second seeded Woodworth from S4 is undefeated this year and has a head to head over Paterson! Aiden Rabideau from S6 and Ryan Burgos from S5 have looked great this year and will contend as will Logan Paterson from S3 and Brock Delsignore from S2. Wildcard entries will definitely make some noise here too as Zach Redding from S11 and Myles Griffin from S3 both finished 3rd in NYS last season. Traub (PSAL) and Ryan (C) are both scrappy and could definitely pick off a higher seed if they are not ready!

What to Watch For…
Adam Busiello may be the biggest favorite at any weight class in this year’s tournament.  The 3X NYS champ is currently ranked #1 in the nation (@ 120) and is the odds on favorite to add to his trophy case here in 2018. Providing the biggest challenge for Busiello will likely be Section 2 champ Gonyea as well as McDougald from Section 6 both of whom placed in this tournament last season. Kellison from S3 placed 7th at ESC and let’s also keep an eye on Sims from S5 and Alton from S8 as potential placers.

What to Watch For:
As a returning NYS champion, Justin Vines has to be considered the favorite here but he will definitely have to earn title number two! This weight is very strong and had several wrestlers who could win the crown on any given day! Vines was a finalist at ESC losing to Jack Davis from Wyoming Seminary but was pushed to the limit in earlier rounds by McDougald and Esposito earning 1-point victories in both bouts. Section 9 champ Greiner gave Vines all he could handle at the NYSPHSAA Duals dropping a 5-3 decision. Lievano from S11 is extremely tough and both S5 entries, Samson and Mitchell could make a run deep here!

This is another weight class that is absolutely wide open!  Section 11’s Chris Gomez was the ESC champion this year and we could consider him the favorite….however, Gomez needed a wildcard to get to Albany after being defeated in the S11 finals by Sobotker. Mason Wersinger from S5 is 39-0 this season and has some very impressive wins over other state qualifiers and we cannot sleep on S9 champ Vetrano who is making his 3rd trip to Albany! S6 champ Catanzaro is 37-1 and his only loss was to a kid from Sem and his next closest match was a 4-3 win over wildcard DeWolf. CHSAA champ Realbuto only has 2 looses this season…both at ESC and both were close losses to placers.  He could definitely make a run here.

What to Watch For…
Could we see a rematch of last year’s state final with Gissendanner vs Shanahan or will we see a rematch of this year’s ESC final where Gissendanner took on Mosher.  Both matches ended with Gissandanner’s arm being raised making him the definite favorite to take home is 4th state title.  He is currently ranked 5th in the nation at 145 by FloWrestling. Mosher is a beast and can’t be taken lightly.  He has 2 losses this year – Gissendanner (#5 Flo) and Teemer (#2 Flo). Shanahan was a state finalist last year and he’s very dangerous as well. CHSAA entry Crawford could bust up this bracket too! He has only three losses on the season and they are all to very tough out of state opponents. A few others to watch here include Dan Mauriello (S11), Warren McDougald (S6), and Vinny Vetrano (S9).

It’s really tough to make a case for anyone at 152 other than Section 8 champ Jacori Teemer.  He is a 4X NYS champion and is currently ranked #2 in the nation by FloWrestling. Teemer will be attening Arizona State in the Fall. Teemer’s opponent in the ESC finals was Matt Grippi from S1 who he defeated 9-5. Grippi is 49-1 this season!  Cooper Kropman from S5 pushed Grippi to his limit in the ESC semis losing 2-1 and will definitely be in the mix here as will Corey Connelly from S8 and Connor Thomas from S1. Dushaj, Stencel and Serafini could all contend for a spot on the podium here. This will be a great weight to follow!

Well Grant Cuomo from S1 was not at ESC this year, he’s a returning state finalist and he’s currently ranked #7 in the nation by Flo! Barnes has committed to NC State and Cuomo is heading to Princeton. There is plenty if depth at this weight as well! Some others to keep your eye on include ESC 4th place finisher David Miele-Estrella from S11, Eames from S4, and Rogers from S8.  Section 9 champ Ganuncio is very tough and could definitely contend for a medal here.

Sammy Deprez from S5 is as tough as they come as is S9 champ Joey Yanis whose only two losses this year were at ESC to Deprez and Ferreira. Franzese from S11 is a returning state place winner but he needed a wildcard this year after being picked off by Liam McIntyre in the S11 tournament.  James Langan from S8 is very tough and definitely will contend for a medal as will Mahon from S4.

Some of the wrestlers we can expect to see challenge for spots on the medal stand include Johnny Santos from S1, Cam Walter from S6, and Nathan Bauland from S11.  Maxx DeCaua from S9 placed at ESC but needed a wildcard to get to Albany after losing to Santander in the S9 semis!

What to Watch For…
220 will be a great weight to watch with no clear cut favorite to take home the state title. Halil Gecaj from S1 suffered his only loss of the season to D2 stud Benedict and is definitely one of the favorites here as is Section 8 champ Elijah Rodriguez who is having a great year and placed 3rd at ESC at 195.  Rabinovich from the PSAL has been very impressive this season going 39-1 with his only loss coming to 285 pound top dog Deonte Wilson. S9 champ Leonard placed 4th at ESC and should be in the hunt here as should Andreesen from S6 and Horl from CHSAA.

What to Watch For…
The heavyweights always provide us with great drama up in Albany and this year should be no exception. S11 champion Deonte Wilson was a state finalist at 285 last year and has not lost a single wrestled match this year (2 ffts at ESC). He has scored bonus points in every match except one!  Wilson’s sole regular decision was in the S11 finals to wildcard entry Joey Slackman who was an ESC finalist. Finishing right behind Slackman in 3rd place at ESC was S4 champ Rupert who will definitely be in the hunt here as will fellow ESC placer Andrew Fenner from S9.  There is a lot of talent at 285 and plenty of potential madalists including Stuart from S8, Greer from CHSAA, Cottom from S5, and Nagosky from S11.

Port Jervis crowned 4 champions and racked up 228 points on their way to the team title at the 2018 D2 Section 9 Tournament.  Taking home top honors for the Red Raiders were Eric Tigue (113), Carson Sauschuck (132), William Harrison (152), and Jason Butler (182).  Red Hook finished 2nd in the team race with 176 points and also crowned 4 champs in Matt Morris (106), Tristen Schiafo (160), Ryan Hobson (195), and Liam Dietrich (285).  Onteora finished 3rd in the team race with 139.5 points and crowned 2 champs in Nick Ross (126) and Dillon Ross (170).  Other Champions included Nikko Walsh from Rondout Valley at 99, Ethan Palanca from New Paltz at 120, Mat Malherio from Highland at 138, Ian Houck from Rondout Valley at 145, and Devin Dixon from New Paltz at 220.  Congratulation to Ian Houck for being voted at the MOW for the tournament!
