Phoenix Mid-Winter Classic
Goshen had 8 wrestlers place in the top 6 and finished 3rd in the team race at the Phoenix Mid-Winter Classic. Leading the way for the Gladiators were Max Winkler (189) and Dom Siracusa (285). Both wrestlers made it to the finals however both ran into some tough competition and needed to settle for silver. Winkler had the unfortunate task of wrestling Kole Mulhauser of Section 3 Central Square in the finals. Mulhauser, a Princeton commit, is currently ranked 8th in the nation by FloWrestling. Siracusa had to lock horns with Nick Rogers of Section 3 General Brown. Rogers, who is considered one of the favorites to win the 285 pound D2 state title in Albany, used a second period reversal to secure a 2-0 win over Siracusa. The other top-6 placers for Goshen were Joe Minnies (3rd @ 110), Jackson Brady (4th @ 138), Dante Joseph (5th @ 189), Declan Bernhardt (4th @ 215), Kyle Kubik (5th @ 215), and Aiden DeEntremont (3rd @ 285).

Schenectady Invitational
Minisink Valley only sent five wrestlers to the Schenectady Invitational – all five came home with first place trophies! Winning title for the Warriors were Eric Tigue at 152, Zack Ryder at 160, Mikey Altomer at 172, Andrew Filip at 189, and Ethan Gallo at 215. Gallo’s finals match was a highly anticipated showdown with Ryan Stein from Section 2 Shaker. Stein along with Gallo are considered two of the top 215-pound wrestlers in NYS D1. The bout did not live up to expectations as Gallo pinned his Section 2 foe in 1:39. Despite only entering five wrestlers in the tournament, the Warriors finished 3rd in the team race with 134 points. Burnt Hills (13 wrestlers) won the tournament with 166 points and Shenendehowa (10 wrestlers) placed 2nd with 152 points. Great job Minisink!

Marco Futia is having a very solid season and enters our D1 ranking at #5. Wylie is the clear #1 at D2 102 and Lorenzo Caserto jumps on the board at #2 D2!

Grossi stays at #4 and MV’s Sullivan re-enters the rankings at #5 at D1 110! Tufano has been absolutely dominating the competition and he’s our #1 D2 followed by Rondout Valley’s Nicholas Laskowki who’s our #2 here.

1. Sofia Macaluso – Minisink Valley, Sr.
2. Alex Greco – Warwick, Jr.

5. Jacob Perales – Goshen, So.
118 – Division 2
1. Rian Kirker – Red Hook, Jr.
2. Rebecca Brennan – New Paltz, 8th

In one of the most highly anticipated matches of the S9 Duals, MV’s Macaluso recorded a pin late in the third period over 2020 NYS place winner Greco from Warwick, so she is our new #1. Futia is our #3 here and Javorsky, who lost a tough 3-0 decision to Macaluso, comes in at #4. Goshen’s Perales is wrestling very tough and he’s our #5 but we need to keep our eye on Pine Bush’s Logan Pennell and Middletown’s Jayden Norris who is now at 118. Red Hook’s Kirker is the clear #1 at 118 D2 while another female wrestler, Rebecca Brennan from New Paltz, cracks the rankings as our #2 here.

126 – Division 1
1. Sebastian Vidacovich – Valley Central, Jr.

1. Andrew Marchese – Washingtonville, Sr.
2. Richie Degon – Valley Central, So.

Degon sits at #2 followed by #3 McKernan who notched a tough 4-2 win over #4 Barczak. Michael Accardo from Warwick breaks into the D1 rankings at #5 but we should also watch Jacob Roger from Middletown. Section 9 Duals – Day 1 Recap

Division 1 – Newburgh Location
Day 1 of the Section 9 Duals is in the books, and it did not disappoint! Top seeded Minisink Valley advances to the semis by shutting out Warwick 72-0 in the quarters. Although the outcome of the dual was never in question, there were a couple of marquee matchups worth mentioning. At 102 pounds MV’s Joseph Uhrig topped Warwick’s Brady Judd 7-3 in a very competitive bout! The biggest surprise of the day, however, came at 118 pounds where Minisink’s Sofia Macaluso pinned former NYS place winner Alex Greco! Macaluso was down 3-2 late in the 3rd and went for broke! It paid off – the MV senior threw and pinned Greco with 6 seconds left on the clock! Warwick advanced to the quarterfinal round by defeating Valley Central by a score of 53-19.

The Warriors will take on #4 seed Newburgh Free Academy in the semifinal round. NFA made it to Day 2 by topping Goshen 46-18 in the Round of 16, and then beating Washingtonville 54-21 in the quarters. This dual featured a couple of very competitive matches but perhaps the match of biggest interest occurred at 145 where NFA’s Jackson Merli pinned Washingtonville’s Dominic Gennaro in a battle of two ranked wrestlers. Washingtonville advanced to the quarters by defeating Kingston in the Round of 16 by a score of 54-18.

Division 1 – Wallkill Location
Second seed Monroe Woodbury advances into the Day 2 semis by topping Cornwall by a score of 44-27 in the quarters. Perhaps the key victory for the Crusaders game at 189 where Monroe Woodbury’s Eryk Shammgod topped Cornwall’s Liam Scott with a pin at the 1:51 mark. Cornwall made it to the quarters by beating Pine Bush in the Round of 16 36-24.

The Crusaders will have their hands full in the semis when they lock horns with 3rd seeded Middletown. The Middies had a convincing 57-12 Round of 16 win over Beacon before topping Wallkill by a score of 40-30 in the quarters. This was a closely contested dual that wasn’t clinched until the second to last bout when Middletown’s Pedro Godine’s topped Wallkill’s Matt Rizzo 9-5 at 138 pounds. Wallkill made it to the quarters by beating Saugerties 35-25 in the Round of 16.

Division 2 – Port Jervis Location
The big story for Day 1 of the Division 2 tournament was New Paltz! Entering the tournament as the #6 seed, the Huguenots picked off 3rd seeded Red Hook in the quarters 48-30 and then punched their ticket to the finals by beating #2 seed Highland 39-33 in the semis! Highland advanced to the semis by defeating Ellenville 42-15 in the quarters. In the finals, New Paltz will take on top seeded Port Jervis. The Red Raiders beat both Liberty in the quarters and Onteora in the semis by the same score – 48-27! Onteora made it through to the semis by narrowly defeating Chester by a score of 31-30 in the quarters.

Day 2 of the Section 9 Duals will take place at Minisink Valley High School. Action will begin with the D1 semis at 5:00 followed by the D1 and D2 finals at approximately 6:30.

Happy New….Rankings!!!

What better way to start off the new year than with an updated set of Section 9 individual rankings! This is our first rankings since the +2lb growth allowance which allowed many of our wrestlers to drop down a weight class for the recent holiday tournaments so you will notice many changes from our last edition. Rest assured you will see plenty of others change weights as the season unfolds! As always, comments are welcomed below or at sectionixwrestling@gmail.com. Enjoy!

102 Pounds
1. Luke Satriano – Valley Central
2. Cooper Merli – NFA
3. Joseph Uhrig – Minisink Valley
4. Charlie Wylie – Port Jervis
5. Brady Judd – Warwick
Valley Central’s Luke Satriano pins NFA’s Cooper Merli in the finals of the Mid-Hudson and is our new #1! Merli slides to #2 and awaits a rematch with Satriano during the NFA vs VC dual on January 4th. MV’s Uhrig looked tough in winning the Kittatinny Tournament and stays #3 while Port Jervis’s Wylie and Warwick’s Judd stay at #4 and #5 respectively.

110 Pounds
1. Trevor Tufano – Port Jervis
2. Nicholas Weeden – Valley Central
3. Wyatt Boice – Minisink Valley
4. Liam Hayes –Monroe Woodbury
5. Cooper Grossi – Wallkill
Tufano from Port Jervis has looked great and stays at #1 but we have a new #2 in Nick Weeden from VC who has dropped down to 110 after Christmas and made it all the way to the finals at the Mid-Hudson. Minisink’s Boice, who took 3rd at Kittatinny, is now at #3 while MW’s Hayes is at #4 and Grossi from Wallkill is our #5. Sullivan from MV cannot be overlooked here and could definitely re-enter the rankings!

118 Pounds
1. Rian Kirker – Red Hook
2. Sofia Macaluso – Minisink Valley
3. Rocco Futia – Wallkill
4. Max Javorsky – Monroe Woodbury
5. Jacob Perales – Goshen
Red Hook’s Kirker holds on to the top spot here but he has a new #2, MV’s Sofia Macaluso, nipping at his heels! Kirker took 4th place in a very tough weight at the Mid-Hudson. Macaluso drops down to 118 becomes the first ever female to win the Kittatinny Tournament in NJ! Wallkill’s Rocco Futia placed 6th at the Mid-Hudson and is #3 here while Monroe’s Javorsky, who placed 4th at the Massapequa Tournament, is our #4. Jacob Perales from Goshen took second at the Cooperstown Invitational and breaks into the rankings at #5 but we must watch out for Pine Bush’s Logan Pennell who can fight his way back into the top 5!

126 Pounds
1. Alex Greco – Warwick
2. Sebastian Vidacovich – Valley Central
3. Anthony Tresch – Minisink Valley
4. Chris Gatto – Highland
5. Jayden Norris – Middletown
Warwick’s Alex Greco is still undefeated and remains #1 at 126. Monroe Woodbury’s Jordan Brown looked great in winning the Massapequa tournament and stays at #2 as did Goshen’s Jackson Brady who took the title in Cooperstown and stays at #3. Highland’s Logan Zehr has dropped down to 138 and is our new #4 and New Paltz’s Justin Coiteux slides down to #5. 145 Pounds
1. Jackson Merli – NFA
2. Luke Greiner – Minisink Valley
3. Ryan Ross – Port Jervis
4. Dominic Gennaro –Washingtonville
5. Reese Greathouse – Marlboro
Tough call here. NFA’s Merli suffered three losses at the Mid-Hudson, but all three losses were to excellent wrestlers. MV’s Greiner majored Gennaro, won the Kittatinny Tournament and remains undefeated. We are going to keep Merli over Greiner for now and hopefully we’ll get a head-to-head at the Section 9 Duals! Ryan Ross from Port Jervis remains undefeated, so he stays at #3 while Washingtonville’s Gennaro is very solid at #4. Our new #4 is Marlboro’s Reese Greathouse. Reece has been inactive for a few weeks but is having a very solid season!

2. Tyler Reed – Cornwall

Cuppett from New Paltz stays at #3 and remains undefeated while Ellenville’s Evans and Warwick’s Nilson round out the top 5. 160 Pounds
1. Zack Ryder – Minisink Valley
2. Anthony Manzi – NFA
3. George Racz – Minisink Valley
4. Logan Smith – Highland
5. Logan Serafin – Washingtonville
Minisink Valley’s Zack Ryder has been dominating his opponents since his 3rd place showing at Ironman and is the clear #1 at 160 in Section 9. After that, things aren’t so cut and dry. NFA’s Anthony Manzi drops down to 160 and looked great at the Mid-Hudson making it all the way to the finals so we put him at #2. Racz from MV finished 3rd at Kittatinny but his only loss was a 1-point decision to the eventual champion – he comes in at #3 here. Our new #3 is Jalen Charles from Middletown who is having a very good year and has a head-to-head over our new #4 Nick Cavallo from Cornwall who placed 5th at the Mid-Hudson. Onteora’s Wyatt Konjas wrestled tough at the Mid-Hudson but didn’t make it to Day 2 but he stays on the board at #5. 1. Mikey Altomer – Minisink Valley
2. Andrew Filip – Minisink Valley
3. Brayden Pennell – Pine Bush
4. Max Winkler – Goshen
5. Joseph Ponesse – NFA
State placewinner Mikey Altomer is expected to drop to 172 however he has not wrestled a match there yet, so he stays our #1 at 189. Once Altomer drops down, this is going to be a fantastic weight to watch. Our #2 at 189 is Altomer’s Minisink Valley teammate Andrew Filip who just won the Kittatinny Tournament and is undefeated this season. Our #3 here is Brayden Pennell from Pine Bush who is having a great year including a head-to-hear over our #4 Max Winkler from Goshen. Winkler just dominated the competition at the Cooperstown Invitational. Winkler’s only two losses this year came to Pennell and to Jabali Zoia from Longwood who just pinned his way through the Mid-Hudson Tournament. Winkler lost to Zoia 5-0 earlier this year. Our #5 at 189 is Joe Ponesse from NFA who had a great showing at Mid-Hudson finishing in 3rd place. We should also keep our eyes on Middletown’s Bryson Tibbs who just place 4th at Massapequa and Kingston’s Nick York who took 5th at the Mid-Hudson.

1. Ethan Gallo – Minisink Valley
2. Teddy Szymanski – Chester

Justin Callahan from Washingtonville is our #4 at 215 and at #5 we have a new wrestler in Louis DelBianco from Beacon. DelBianco made it to the finals of the Mid-Hudson and lost a razor-close 4-3 decision for his only loss of the season. He also has a win over Cornwall’s Gavin Furst who will definitely be in the medal hunt this year as will Jake McVey from Washingtonville and Fernand Vera from Middletown who was a Massapequa finalist.

285 Pounds
1. Stephan Monchery – Middletown
2. Dominick Siracusa – Goshen
3. Nick Valenzano – Cornwall
4. Aiden Gove – Minisink Valley
5. Tyler Haydt – Beacon
With Gallo dropping down to 215, Middletown sophomore Stephan Monchery is the clear #1 at heavyweight. Monchery is undefeated this season and just pinned his way through the Massapequa Tournament. Out new #2 is Dominick Siracusa from Goshen who just mowed his way to the title at Cooperstown with 4 fist period pins and a 10-3 decision in the finals. Cornwall’s Valenzano has been very tough this year and made it all the way to the finals of the Mid-Hudson. Our next two wrestlers are new to the rankings as Aiden Gove from MV comes in at the #4 spot while Mid-Hudson placer Tyler Haydt from Beacon lands at #5.
